Villainy Plugin Update

Good afternoon Lord of the Craft,

Twice in a day, I know. But now instead of fixing things and explaining problems I am bringing to you a brief plugin update that will hopefully change the way players approach and reason before performing villainy. The Administration and Technical staff have been keeping an eye on the feedback forums and were lucky to come across a certain plugin idea.

Feedback threads that we have observed: one, two

As the time passes, we notice that our community is growing increasingly concerned about quality of villain-roleplay, as well as pvp combat initiation with absence of sufficient prior roleplay. We realize this is a problem, and the last step to resolving any need for VA's couldn't be any easier.

We wouldn't need to re-instate VA's, we don't need to enforce draconian rules, and neither do we need to come up with an entire new system and expend effort we could be placing elsewhere.
Instead, we would like to try adding a command to solve this issue and problem. While we won't claim this will solve all problems, we firmly believe it is worth an attempt and will solve most of them.
If this ends up in detriment of the server we will be swift in removing it, our goal is your entertainment on LotC!

Command:
/nodrop - if you die within the next 10 minutes, you will drop no items. (items will perish without dropping)

/nd - alias

What are the benefits:

  • Aggressors are heavily encouraged to keep their victim alive, killing unnecessarily has always been a problem in Lord of the Craft because it leaves little place for character development, and leaves little roleplay in it's wake.
  • If they are still considering the act of killing, the aggressor must strive to increase the quality and enjoyment of the roleplay for the victim, and encourage them through roleplay to surrender some (or all) of their items to them.
  • This encourages self-moderation between players, if there is a villain that is causing havoc and isn't putting effort into their roleplay (e.g. killing for loot, not for roleplay), they don't deserve your items and effort. The beauty of the situation is there is no waiting for GM's to resolve anything, because the power is in your hands.
  • Death does not lose its impact, because the victim still loses their items death is remains something to be feared.

Yes, there is a negative that we would willingly accept, here it is:

  • Spiteful players may type this command regardless of what the assailant does, this leaves no items to be gained.

If you take a second-glance at the negative, the only difference from normal is that the assailant has gained nothing from the combat roleplay, the victim still lost their items and learned their lesson, life goes on. It is not a massive problem, perhaps players may toggle this command during wars or battles too, that is not a major concern either.

In the essence, once bandits who kill for loot with minimal roleplay realize there is little to be gained in the pain, angst, and/or irritation of their victims, they will find new, creative methods involving roleplay to engage their victim(s) to attain the items. Remember that players/victims are not gold mines, they are real people and play on LotC to enjoy the roleplay, if you need loot/materials you are still able to acquire them via. the mines, chopping lumber, digging, etc.

Automatically, 'minas or die' is foolish, one-liners or even two-liners are downright ridiculous, as we are a community with common sense and logic, we will begin to embrace new ways to approach LotC's combat.

Well done. I can see that this new command should help put a stop to a lot of complaining and modreqs.

This is dumb, and it will get abused.

Don't see how it'll get abused unless you want to be a massive douchebag every time you die.

EDIT: After speaking to some people, it seems almost everyone would still use it instead of losing their items

It'd be alot better if they didn't do it at all, Y'know.

Well, in battles people would rather their stuff disappear than you get it.

Aye, yet we can't fix people, as the staff we can guide players in the direction that would be beneficial.
