The lone duke lingered in the cool Brelusian shade as he watched the serfs work the fields of Novellen. The Grand Harvest doled Adria a grand bounty this year. The young Rickard Barrow once quipped that loyalist corpses had enriched the Adrian soil, but that quip was in poor taste after the day's recent events. A skirmish gone awry, the victory that the crown so desperately sought; but all in all, it meant little to most Adrians. Fresh recruits piled in droves to enlist among the Greycloaks, new peasants had returned from the year's pilgrimage to provide fodder, and most of all, the Savoyards had finally, after a year of cat-and-mouse, attacked after their stunning losses. Hugues hungered for a fight and, even in defeat, he relished the spirit of war.

 

Yet all those thoughts slipped aside as a man in burlap approached the Duke of Adria. His countenance was pristine, his gait humble and true, and the iron lorraine which dangled from his neck swayed with the breeze. He was no different from Father Branaford, Cordal, or even Theodosius. He was an acolyte sent to minister in Brelus, where its twin priests had taken sabbatical. Named Josef, he brought great company for the young lord. The acolyte's words soothed his doubts and made the war seem so distant and faint. As much as Hugues' claimed to despise priests, they always brought him fond memories; his closest friends forged over men of the cloth. The pair wasted hours together sharing story and saga.

 

But in a flash, the dagger rose, swift and sure, and its steel kissed the Duke's neck.

In the realms loyal to the crown, common soldiery had celebrated the demise of Hugues Sarkozic with open fanfare. He was dubbed Hugo the Headless, an apt moniker for the the carefree rebel who once ate at the Ashford table only to turn cloak. The lordlings of Savoy breathed a sigh of relief as their reign was left unchallenged, rid of serious opposition. 

 

Mourning rang through Adria as its denizens great fear had come true.  Countless heroes of the Adrian efforts were slain by Ashford hands; Johann Vladov, Kozlovskii Vladov, Sixtus III, Castor Chivay, and now their own Lord Paramount. Men cried for vengeance, their justice undone. Men cried for peace, seeking solace and mercy. But women wailed loudest, the Duke's own lady wife and his own lady sister, as the church bells tolled and all feared what retribution was to come.

Constantine was not to suffer the same fate as his otherworldly marked man duplicate. Discovering the Duke's headless body in the cathedral, he temporarily brought it to the altar, announced his death, then brought him upstairs. Swiftly packing his belongings and removing his uniform, he mounted his horse and rode from Brelus. To Peremont, Felsen, Saltstone, and other such fiefs he rode, delivering the shocking news to the entire realm.

Siegemeyer would bow his head in unison with his fellow members of the Adrian army, paying their respect to their deceased leader. No words were uttered from him, simple silence.

Ser Garahel sits on a ledge at Castle Saltstone, his feelings conflicted. The war should soon be over, the Kingdom safe. But his childhood friend had been murdered, nay, butchered, by an unknown assassin. Taking a gulp of his wine, he sat there looking out at the sea. Unsure whether to cry or cheer.

Drevin de Sarkozy sits in a tavern with his buddies. "Apologies for poor speak. When were you when Lord Hugues Sarkozic dies? I was sat at home when Pjort ring"

In all seriousness, Drevin saw lord Hugues as a father figure. Drevin did anything asked of Hugues, putting his life countless times in risk to keep him safe, including stopping an assassination attempt previously by taking a dagger for him. He sits, at a tavern alone for the night, drinking his sorrows away. He raises his bottle of Mulled Wine by its neck, Hugues' favorite drink, and raises his voice in the quiet room. "I asked you today of your favorite title, out of random curiosity. You didn't reply with 'King of the East', 'Your Majesty', or 'King of the Oren Empire'. You said, with a smile on your face:"

"Your Grace, I always will enjoy Your Grace, even as king."

Gregor hears the news of his fallen friend and simply sits in his cabin in mourning. No tears drip from his eyes but his heart aches heavy, falling into his stomach. Arguably one of Gregor's first true friends, hearing about the incident hit home. The death of the young prominent Duke swept through the lands like wildfire, leaving nothing but dropped jaws in its wake.

Rodrick throws a banner in the air after this sick music transition.

 

"Tonight we rise and rebel we kill the ones who created hugo the headless LETS GO RALLY WITH ME."

 

Rodrick runs through blackgrove forest and rallies potential flowers to hiscause! You can't fight the friction!

Sporan came into the Cathedral to see the headless body of the Duke, lying lifeless on the floor. He stares at the body in a mixture of confusion, bewilderment, and denial. "They will pay." were the only words he uttered as he quickly walked out of the death site.

His eyes filled with tears, having known the great duke, having the duke change his life from such a early age, and then reading the saddened news, he cant help but feel proud because he has been one of the many that he changed, and he cant help but feel oh so very thankful, that he changed his life for the better... "I hope your up there with the greats, Hugh... I really do... Thank you, for everything... Thank you for being my friend when I couldn't find one... Thank you..." And with those words, he closes the parchment. Pondering on what to do next...
