What's your ideal map-size?

I've been making maps for all sorts of servers over the past few years and I've been racking my brain around what the perfect size map is.

(for 150-250 players online)

How long do you think it should take to sprint from east to west, north to south on your ideal map? 5 minutes? 10 minutes? 20?

(assuming the map is surrounded by water)

**5k blocks takes roughly 12 minutes to sprint across**

Obviously people like to explore things but at one point is there so much to explore that people are too spread out?

Or how many blocks do you think a map should be? (Example: 4k x 5k, 2.5k x 2k, etc.)

Thanks and look forward to some discussion ?

Absolutely massive, I'd like a map larger than this if I'm honest, it just requires an excellent fast travel system

Absolutely massive map where we start with a small portion of it and reclaiming the other 90% of the map will be done through events. Then again, thats too much work.

3x3. Everyone spawns in the same place.

It is a fight to the death.

The winner claims the map for himself.

That is LotC for the next year.

How long would you fellas expect it to take to sprint from edge to edge? 30 minutes? (10-12k width)

And fast travels, where would they take you? Directly to the settlement? Or some neutral place nearby?

Athera sized without the nonsensical Kings road system. Maybe even slightly larger.

Map sizes do not matter if they are beyond a certain size.

What determines the quality of a map is the playerbase, and the features on the server. The size of a map is the most miniscule detail if everything else is done properly. Emphasize thoser things instead.

Pretty sure we could do this with just a simple region border, that could be added with a cuboid parent region as RP deemed it fit to expand the realm.

I've been around for a depressingly long time and I've seen the pros and cons of various map sizes. Personally, I believe that lotc works best on the smaller spectrum of map sizes. I don't think fast travels should exist at all and allow horses/mounts to have a purpose. We've always had the problem of having to balance the need to explore and the need to centralize RP.

The main problem is that these days everyone is entitled to having their own plot of land with each person owning 10x10 house where they all have their own storage, which forces the staff to make bigger maps to accomodate all these players. A long time ago, owning a home used to be a prize/achievement, especially obtaining a house in one of the capitals.

The way I believe the map should be designed is to have the 4-5 main capitals be within a resonable radius from the center of the map (something like anthos) or what we are currently doing on Tahn, and have all the exploration be on the outside of this radius. So you don't need to spread everything out to allow for exploration, but you can add an infinite amount of crap on the outside. If players want to explore, they can just start moving outwards. Sort of how Aegis worked.

Right now, there are like 10 different cities that are seperated by long empty roads which makes the server feel dead at times. These days im seeing like 200 players online on weekdays? I've never seen that before on lotc, but it definately doesn't feel like it because everyone is so spread out.

LOTC is just a glorified build server now.

An Athera sized map - although many people think it was small, it wasn't actually. All of the nations were instead pushed into this one central point of the map which made it look small. The map was excellently detailed and looked amazing.

Anthos. Just bring back Anthos.

Anthos was about 4,000 blocks blocks tall and 3,200 blocks wide for reference ?

Anthos was my favourite map by far, very well sized so travel from Kal'Azgoth to Abresi probably took around 10 minutes. Whilst there was still enough land for players to have different holds, guilds, cities etc. Even bringing back the Wilds would be awesome for new players as it honestly did more good then harm. Very spacious yet close to everywhere. Perfect size in my opinion. Athera whilst also being a good map was a tad too small which meant nations tended to be at eachothers throats too often, I could walk from Kal'Karaad to Felsen (I think the human capital was called) in like 5 minutes or less which I believe was too little and didn't allow nations to grow.

That for crying out loud, getting rid of fast travel would solve so many issues and complications.
