A Thesis ON Boku No Pico (Episode 1)

THE RECAP

(please note I watched the ENTIRE episode to form this thesis. Keep this in mind when deciding if I deserve your rep or not.)

Most people think that Boku no Pico is just a meme and nothing more than a dare because it has some form of shock value. However, those who sit through the first episode may be able to appreciate the relationship between Tamotsu and Pico. Tamotsu is just an average guy and the show starts with him waiting for some people to move away from the binoculars. When he does finally get his turn to use them one of the most notable things he does is watch a couple on the beach.

The next thing he sees is Pico. The two lock eyes for a moment and suddenly disappears. Tamotsu's behavior reflects his loneliness and his longing for a meaningful relationship with another person. The story progresses and eventually after holding Pico up to look through a viewfinder, the two sit together in Tamotsu's car. Pico is idly eating an ice cream while Tamotsu watches him intently. Pico offers him a lick and the ice cream spills onto Tamotsu's shirt. Tamotsu does the rational thing and orders Pico to lick it off his shirt since his shirt will stain if it dries. I won't go into detail but what's important to note is that during the end of this scene Pico himself admits to dropping the ice cream and making a mess in Tamotsu's car. Keep that in mind.

We next see Pico fooling around in his Grandfather's restaurant until Tamotsu arrives and the two head out together. Unfortunately, it begins raining and the two take shelter. Nothing of importance happens here save for Pico saying Ecchi (A Japanese slang term for PLAYFUL sexual activity.) When Tamotsu questions him about this he explains himself saying that they tend to become intimate in his car.

Sometime later the two are alone together and Tamotsu buys Pico some clothing for him to wear. Pico makes a fuss about it but reluctantly agrees to wear the clothing.

More shenanigans happen until a scene where Pico asks Tamotsu what he means to him. When Tamotsu doesn't immediately respond Pico runs off to be alone. Tamotsu then spends the next few hours checking everywhere to find Pico and eventually finds him sitting alone in a graveyard. The two reminisce and the episode ends with Pico alone on a bed, thinking of the time spent together. What's important to note is that Tamotsu is absent from this scene.

THE THESIS

Now despite Pico being in the title of the series Tamotsu is the true protagonist of this story. He is a man of relative success and wealth who traveled to rural Japan in an attempt to get away from the stressful city life of his hometown. He often reflects on his loneliness. We open on him watching two women bent over. What he does next is admire a relationship from afar while possibly wanting himself to have something similar. Then he sees Pico.

Pico is almost tauntingly in his vision for a fraction of a second before disappearing. He creates a seed of intrigue in Tomatsu's mind. When they do formally meet each other Tomatsu has already spent hours thinking and wondering about him and who he is. Is it any surprise that he eagerly offers to take Pico on a private outing. It's a well thought out, perfectly executed plan. Over the course of the episode, we see Pico mentally torturing Tomatsu with his behavior. Acting oblivious to his advances, ruining his car, referring to their relationship as 'playful', rejecting a gift that Tomatsu spent money on then immediately accepting it. He even runs away and forces Tomatsu to come to a graveyard in the dead of night to apologize for his actions that were completely rational.

My thesis is that Pico is nothing more than an incubus that feeds off of lonely individuals and forces them to grow emotionally attached to him. He thrives off of mortal attention. He sucks Tomatsu into the relationship and acts uninterested and uncaring. Then blows an incident well out of proportion to make Tomatsu feel like HE is in the wrong. This is a form of mental abuse used commonly in abusive relationships.

This is a story of loneliness, rejection, hate, self-loathing, and pity. However, the ending is what gives me hope. We see Tomatsu has realized that maybe his loneliness is better than what his desperation has driven him to. He leaves Pico with a newfound hope and positive outlook on life. Tomatsu is free.
