Soft PKs

What is a soft PK?

A soft PK is when an eventline is closed off to your char due to a previous failure that has resulted in their IC death. Unlike an actual PK, the player only loses all knowledge of the events during and leading up to their ‘PK’ in the eventline and an OOC barrier will be in place preventing the player(s) from partaking in another instance of that particular eventline.

Why embrace soft PKs?

This removes the chances for a player to ruin the story elements of an event line without forcing them to lose their characters. Think of it as a quality management device.

What happens when a player fails to follow a soft PK?

Depending on the extent of damages due to things like meta’d information, an entire group or list of names associated with the information divulging player may be blocked from event entry. Harsh but essential to maintaining a story that should not have been expressed to a large playerbase.

This is a rule set to be put into use with a series of events and this thread will act as a 'set in stone' guideline.
I am glad to discuss and adjust to oversights.

Soft PK's shouldn't apply only to event lines but to all Roleplay interactions that people have. PK would clearly be preferable, but if you can't do that, then soft pking is the only thing that makes sense. Huge +1 from me.

Unfortunately there are times when you have to make the effort to meet folks half way.

I think this was the case with the Mordskov eventline last map. I think it worked out just fine, it added to the suspense of it all. I'd be perfectly fine with a '3 chances' type rule be implemented for all high stakes eventlines.

Good idea.

The less chances, the better. Hammer the idea of precautionary measures and intelligent moves into people's skulls.

I do concur. Sounds dandy.

Sounds neat, my only concern would be how do you suggest ensuring such isn't abused? How do you prevent it from just further cementing certain cliques of players only doing things for one another?

For example: I decide to make my own little eventline thing centered around... Stealing something, I dunno.

Whatever it is I'm up to though Billy Bob decides he wants to join. It sounds like fun to him and his character heard about it so he's got a valid way into the RP.

I OOCly dislike Billy Bob. I think he's an idiot, I don't want him involved in my group no matter what his character is like or what RP was done. So I go out of my way to ensure he dies.

Or say I decide on an eventline that at the end everyone gets some neat item/magic/whatever.

But I only want my friends to get it so I ensure that everyone else dies along the way.

RP is RP, if you make those decisions to kill someone to ensure you get all the loot then that's allowed.

Players who will run soft-PK systems will be able to not abuse the system, because it will be mainly Temp and trusted ET who will use such things.

Also it encourages you sticking in your groups instead of making new ones to delve into events, allows for a more cohesive scenario and stops the ooc threats of betrayal you're afraid of being abused.

tbh - events are BEST when they're not just public random sign up events.

the event would be **** going with ppl u oocly dislike w/o this soft pk thing so thats not really a reason to say soft pk isnt necessary

i still think this soft pk thing is like, way overreacting to the very occasional person who's abusing events - simple solution is to just not run events that involve something spook powerful enough that it's problematic. but then again im a peasant rper who realizes that big magic is big bad

If people don't like Billy Bob, there are tons of ways to ensure that he doesn't get involved with the event line, soft PK or no. I'll take any ET over a rand, sorry, but they're proven to be excellent RPers and I trust them. Even then, these events are optional, no one said Billy Bob has to join.
