Earth Evocation

Introduction: The art of earth evocation involves the conjuration of the element of earth from the void, and using the material to the caster’s advantage. Unlike other elemental evocations, earth is not limited to a single element and its alterations. For combat spells, earth evocation revolves around both stone and sand, having their own uses for the caster.

General Redlines:

Spoiler
  • The caster is not immune to their own element.

  • A spell can not be evoked at a location that is not directly within the mage’s line of sight.

  • An earth evocationist is unable to manipulate already present earth, or varieties of earth. The material evoked is dragged directly from the void, and disappears as soon as a connection is lost.

  • An earth evocationist can only upkeep one spell at once, unless aided by the ritual of permanence.

  • Projectiles cast vanish upon impact, crumbling and disappearing into nothingness. Therefore, a spell that was cast leaves no leftover material.

Spells and Abilities:

Combat

  • Stone shard [Tier 1]:
    • Stone shard allows the caster to conjure a simple, jagged rock to launch as its intended target. The size of this projectile depends on the skill level of the caster. Stone shard is not a lethal weapon in most situations, but as the mage grows more experienced it can cause more damage.

Spoiler
  • Stone shard takes  3 emotes at all tiers, one to establish a connection to the void, one to conjure the shard and one to launch it at its intended target.

  • At tier 1, the shard is only 5 centimeters in length, this size however increases as the caster grows more experiences, with an increase of 2 centimeters in length for each tier the caster has advanced after tier 1(up to a maximum of 13 centimeters).

  • Sandblast [Tier 2]:
    • A concentrated mass of sand is evoked by the caster, and allows them to shoot it forward. The shape of this projectile is spear-like, much like the stone shard. Sandblast will in most cases not cause injury, but rather serves as a distraction, and a form of blinding the caster’s opponent.

Spoiler
  • Sandblast takes 3 emotes at all tiers, one to establish a connection to the void, one to conjure the mass of sand and one to launch it as its intended target.

  • When conjuring, the mass of sand represents a shapeless blob the spear-like formation onlyforming when it’s fired at the target. Sandblast applies no to minor concussive force to its target, but could blind someone and irritate their eyes should this spell come in contact with them.

  • The size of sandblast remains the same among all tiers of earth evocation, being a 7 centimeter long projectile while travelling.

  • Stone flurry [Tier 3]:
    • The caster conjures a group of stone shards, which upon being conjured can be launched as their target in quick succession.

Spoiler
  • Stone flurry takes at least 4 emotes at all tiers, one to establish a connection to the void, two to conjure the shards and one emote to launch the initial two, after which it takes an additional one emote for the following two shards.

  • The size of the shards conjured by stone flurry follow the same growth pattern as Stone Shard, starting off at 9 centimeters.

  • The amount of shards the mage is able to conjure increases with their experience. Starting at 4 and increasing with 2 shards for each additional tier

  • Sand stream [Tier 3]:
    • The casters channels a flow of sand in their hand, before releasing it as a stream to suppress the target.

Spoiler
  • Stand stream takes 4 emotes to cast, one to establish a connection with the void, two to channel the stream and one to release the stream onto the target.
  • Upon release the concentrated mass of sand from the mage’s palm forms an initial suppressive beam with the force of the already conjured sand. This sand is enough to upkeep a stream for one emote, after which every additional emote the stream is being used also has the caster evoke additional sand. This stream can be kept up for 1 additional emote at tier 3, to then increase with one emote per tier, up to a maximum of 3.

  • Stone wall [Tier 4]:
    • A stone, immobile wall like formation which serves as a defensive spell for the caster.

Spoiler
  • Stone wall takes 3 emotes to cast. One to establish a connection to the void, and two to form the structure.

  • The wall is immobile, and therefore can only serve as a defensive spell for the caster.
  • The size of the wall is the same for all tiers, being 1.5 meters in height, 20 centimeters in diameter and 2 meters wide.

  • Stone disc [Tier 4]
    • A medium sized stone disc, able to travel at high velocities but with limited accuracy.

Spoiler
  • The disc takes 4 emotes to cast. One to establish a connection to the void, two to conjure the formation and one to launch it at its target.

  • The disc is a meter in diameter, but only ten centimeters thick. Its edges are rounded, meaning the disc itself does not serve as a sharp object, but rather a weapon to apply brute, concussive force onto the target.

  • When launching the disc, it does not travel in a straight line, but follows a curved path towards its target. This causes it to be relatively inaccurate, meaning the distance at which it is launched is key to making an attack with this spell successful.

  • Sand storm [Tier 5]:
    • Surrounding the caster, dome of rotating sand forms, expanding in size and velocity as the duration of the spell increases.

Spoiler
  • Sand storm takes at least 3 emotes to cast. One to establish a connection to the void and two to conjure up the initial sand storm. An additional emote is required each time the caster expands the storm, and for the duration of the spell.

  • The initially formed storm surrounds a 1 meter radius around the caster, increasing in size for each additional emote made after its formation. The velocity at which the sand particles travel also increases as the storm grows more violent. An increase in size does mean that the mage is required to conjure up additional particles, causing rapid exhaustion if they wish to upkeep the storm at its maximum size (upon reaching the 3 meter radius, the storm can be kept up for an additional 2 emotes).

  • Sandstorm will be kept up for as long as the caster maintains their connection with the void, disappearing immediately upon losing connection.

  • Sandstorm does not act like a shield, people are still able to pass through

  • Boulder [Tier 5]:
    • A massive circular stone formation, conjured in front of the caster. Although moving slow when fired at their target, the damage a boulder can inflict is potentially massive.

Spoiler
  • Boulder takes 4 emotes to cast. One to establish a connection to the void, two to form the boulder and one to launch it.

  • The boulder, upon reaching its full size is 2 meters in diameter, although its shape is round it is not smooth, but rather jagged.
  • Due to the nature of the boulder, it can not be launched at extremely high speeds nor great accuracy, the impact of the boulder however could have devastating effects.

Non-combat spells

Tier 1 - 2:

  • Evoke Element
    • The caster evokes  stone, sand or dirt which can not be used in combat.

Spoiler
  • Evoke element requires at least 2 emotes to use, 1 to connect to the void, and subsequent emotes to evoke additional material, and alter its shape.

  • The amount of evokes material depends on the amount of time the caster spends on the spell. The longer the mage holds their connection, the more material they will be able to evoke.

  • The shape of the material, just like the amount varies on the amount of time the caster spends on the spell. If enough time is spent, basic, smoothed out shapes are able to be produced through this spell.

  • Material evoked by this spell, just like with combat spells is unable

Tier 3-5:

  • Advanced Evoke Element
    • An advanced non-combat spell, where the caster gains the ability to evoke other materials, such as ores.

Spoiler
  • Advanced evoke element functions the same way as Evoke Element does, however additional materials can be evokes.

  • The caster gains the ability to evoke a wide variety of materials, including various ores and minerals.

  • Evokes elements such as iron ore come in their unrefined, raw form. They, just like any other elements vanish as soon as the caster loses connection with the void, and therefore can not be utilized beyond this simple spell.

Tier Progression:

Tier 1: The start of the caster’s journey. If the student has not yet established a connection to the void before, this will be their first step in the learning process. If the caster has previously established a connection with the void through study of another magic, the majority of this tier will be made up out of studying the elements of earth, and casting their first basic spell.

Spells: Evoke Element, Stone Shard

Description: In this tier, after a connection with the void has been established the first step for the caster is to understand the elements of earth through study. The majority of this tier is made up out of learning about the void, attempting to connect to it and learning the Evoke Element spell. Only when the student has a solid grasp on evoking small amounts of material, can they begin to learn how to cast Stone Shard.

Duration: 2 weeks

Tier 2: The second chapter in the learning process of the mage, unlocking more spells and improving on previously learned abilities.

Spells: Evoke Element, Stone Shard, Sandblast

Description: In the second tier of Earth Evocation, the main focus of the mage will be on improving on previously learned spells, and learning the Sandblast spell afterwards. At the start of this tier they will focus on becoming more fluent at casting both Evoke Element and Stone Shard. For Evoke Element, larger amounts of material will be evokes, and basic shapes can be made with less effort. The Stone Shard, given enough practise will also conjure a larger shard, allowing for a more effective combat spell. Sandblast will be learned halfway through this tier, as the caster grows more familiar with the evocation of various elements.

Duration: 3 weeks

Tier 3: A midway point for the aspiring mage, where they learn new abilities and master previously learned ones.

Spells: Evoke Element, Stone Shard, Sandblast, Stone Flurry, Sand Stream

Description: Progression from this point on becomes relatively simple. The mage has now grown accustomed to evoking materials, and can begin to focus their efforts on more unique elements, as well as unlocking more powerful combat spells.

Duration: 5 weeks

Tier 4Approaching their mastery of the magic, a Tier 4 Earth Evocation mage puts their main focus on perfecting the spells they previously learned, and practising their newly learned ones.

Spells: Evoke Element, Stone Shard, Sandblast, Stone Flurry, Sand Stream, Stone Wall, Stone Disc

Description: Close to mastering the possibilities of Earth Evocation, the longest phase of the mage’s journey begins here. With a wide variety of spells at their disposal, they become a potent force in combat.

Duration: 6 weeks

Tier 5The pinnacle of the caster’s personal ability. Having learned all possible combat and non-combat spells. From here on out, the only progress the mage can make is mastering their spells, and the Ritual of Permanence.

Spells: Evoke Element, Stone Shard, Sandblast, Stone Flurry, Sand Stream, Stone Wall, Stone Disc, Sand Storm, Boulder

Description: The pinnacle of the caster’s personal ability. Having learned all possible combat and non-combat spells. From here on out, the only progress the mage can make is mastering their spells and the Ritual of Permanence.

Ritual of Permanence:

Upon reaching Tier 5 of Earth Evocation, the caster will gain the ability to enhance their spells to a new level through a ritual, that of Permanence. Performing this ritual allows the caster to cast the spell of Permanence, which will cause their next spell cast to remain in place for a longer amount of time, even after their connection is broken.

To perform this ritual, a piece of paper must be inscribed with two runes, drawn in liquid mana. The meaning of these runes must be understood by the performer of the ritual. The runes, representing Earth, Stone and Strength respectively are as follows:

Upon creating the parchment, the following step is for the mage to connect to the Void, and imbue the paper with their mana. Upon finishing this step, the caster must destroy the paper using a spell of their choosing, so long as it damages it beyond repair.

Spoiler
  • Casting Permanence itself requires two emotes, one to connect to the void before casting the spell they wish to apply Permanence on, and focus on the runes learned during the ritual. After these two emotes, the next spell cast will be affected by Permanence.

  • Permanence can be applied to all spells of the caster, but applies limitations to some:
    • Sandstorm affected by Permanence may not grow beyond its initial one meter radius, but can be upkept for 2 emotes without requiring additional sand particles to be evoked. After these 2 initial emotes, Permanence will fade from the spell, and unless the caster channels their focus onto the storm itself, it will fade.

    • Stone Wall, when affected by Permanence becomes brittle and crumbles over time. This also means that when suffering from impact, the wall will break more easily.
  • The effects of Permanence on other spells:
    • Stone Shard, Sandblast, Stone Flurry, Stone Disc, Boulder all remain in the air after being fully evoked for the duration of 2 extra emotes, before either disappearing, or being launched by the caster. During this time, the mage can evoke another spell, and launch both spells towards the target at once in the same way they would without Permanence.

    • Sand Stream, due to its inability to remain present without constant evocation, is not affected by Permanence but can be cast in addition to a spell already affected by the ritual.

The combat spells you present are fair and represent a healthy portion of the spell tactics I’ve seen with the evocation over the years in it’s freeform days. Permanence seems a little under cooked on an initial read, but it’s potentially just that it’ll be better in practice than I’m predicting.
