Telanir 6435 Popular Post Share Posted March 23, 2020 Hello everyone, I just wanted to post an update on the lag situation. So for anyone unaware, during peak player times (~15:00 EST-23:00 EST) we’re suffering from some pretty heavy server lag which climbs steeply when the server reaches 150+ players. The truth is multiplayer Minecraft was originally intended to support only a few dozen (~30) players at once on the same server. In modern times, the game has been optimized and updated to support more players, and servers like us like to throw the most beefy expensive hardware we can possibly buy with money to get that last bit of juice out. Minigame servers like Hypixel are able to host thousands of players on their networks because all these players are on different servers. For these servers there are no immersion limitations (or any limitations really) to splintering the experience into dozens of separate servers connected through loading screens. At most, networks such as these only allow up to 100 players to run around on one server. One of the longest running vanilla Minecraft servers, 2b2t allows a maximum of 150 players on their server (and everyone else waits in a queue). As far as I know they have no game-changing plugins really, just the basic vanilla experience. So what does this mean for us? We have three options really, A) We limit the total online player count. B) We patch the server internals to improve performance on the main server. C) We splinter the map into zones which, when entered, transport you automatically to the corresponding server for that area. We have been pursuing both B and C but we’re currently facing a bit of a dilemma during this pandemic quarantine. It’s a funny problem to have as, in a way, we are suffering from our own success. Peak player volume reaches around 220 players daily, and with special events ongoing or otherwise, we reach unprecedented numbers, almost 250 and even higher. The issue with allowing infinite volume of players online is that while yes we have big high numbers, if everyone is allowed to login at once then nobody can play because the core experience grinds to a halt (in other words, no chunks for anybody). If you or a loved one is finding roleplaying impossible during peak playtime, please comment below so that we may consider our next steps. In the next day or so we will be pulling the server down for some maintenance more frequently than usual, as we have the patches outlined in step B) ready and would like to test them out to gauge the improvements so far. As for C), we should have our in-house solution ready in-time to deploy for 8.0, our next map. The restarts in the next day or two should hopefully make things at least a little bit better, but we will see. We’re not sure what to expect yet from the patches. AndrewTech 2834 Share Posted March 23, 2020 I like the idea of an Option C, but only if it’s done right. Splitting the world up into like, three different islands like in Axios would actually be rather cool. I honestly think that keeping the server whole would be for the best, but if we go with Option A then it’ll only hurt it a lot more in the long term.
