It was inevitable that Almaris would fall. The weeks spent planning for the final siege in the ruins of Savoy was enough evidence of the fact, where friend and foe alike searched desperately for an escape. Those more experienced, or perhaps more optimistic, ignored the blade above their neck in favor of treating the ordeal as nothing more than a particularly annoying pest. Perhaps it was this that made Valentina forget. Every day that passed surrounded by the joyous Talonnii frayed her good sense. She allowed herself to fall into the embrace of the unprepared, drinking and speaking over the campfire instead of trading for potions or planning.

Any excuses to be made about being away from her family when the horns bellowed were irrelevant. The intrusive thoughts sneaking their way into her consciousness did not seem to agree with her realism as she led the non-combatants of the Tallonnii deeper into the cave systems. Elewen kept glancing at her with an odd expression, but Valentina was too tired to attempt deciphering whatever emotion the youth bore.

Nearly there. Keep pace.” Valentina rasped to the party of ducklings at her flank, nearly grimacing at the deformity of her voice. She did her best to ignore the scratching pain of her throat and added. “Watch your step.”

Someone heeded her warning too late if the crunch of flesh against stone was anything to go by. The accursed paused in their pace to check, only just managing not to sigh as Tenebrae hissed and was helped into a sitting position by her elder sister. Blood pooled from the child’s skinned knee -- much to Elewen’s panic. Something in the back of their head urged them to leave the children behind to find Arynn. Valentina entertained the thought. Briefly.

It was banished almost as quickly as it came when tears pooled in the girl’s eyes. She grimaced as her throat worked, ignoring the screams of protest her body demanded to speak. “It’s just up ahead. I’ll carry her and leave her in your care so that I might seek something to prevent infection.”

Neither of them spoke when Valentina hefted the child up into a bridal carry. Nor did they when they reached the outskirts of the Ruined Hold the Dwarf told them about. Something quiet was uttered when she lowered the oem’ii near a tattered bookshelf, when her sister was quick to begin soothing the still wet-eyed girl. Valentina only glanced back once as she ventured further into the abandoned structure.

Distantly, she could hear several voices further beyond the main room. Familiarity only just registering in her numbness. They advanced upon it, whether to get supplies for Tenebrae or for something else, not even she knew. Warmth blossomed along her flesh as the Elf stepped into the much smaller room, noting the walls of bookshelves that graced the walls before turning back to those voices.

For a moment everything froze.

Later, Valentina would remember that other members of their Talonnii were present. She would gather them close despite her adverseness to touch. That time would come later. When she was not ensnared by familiar blue eyes, locked onto the form of the one being that urged her mind entirely still and empty of unwanted thought.

Valentina did not know who moved first. She heard the loud clang of metal as their armor met in embrace. Arms moved without thought around the High Elf, squeezing and holding as if anything less would make her disappear. Arynn was safe and in her arms and alive.

Arynn was the first to draw back, even if not by much. Her face was bruised and suffered minor cuts - but she was smiling, bright and mad - speaking words that Valentina couldn’t hear over the noise of the unfamiliar emotion that ensnared her. The sensation consumed, taking and taking away the accursed being’s thoughts and leaving behind only one to repeat again and again in the echochamber of her head.

Marry me.” She blurted.

The Tennallar paused in whatever it was she had been saying. Something Valentina only just realized she interrupted. She had no time to panic after making her ill-timed proposal.

Not when Arynn smiled brighter, split lip tearing further open and answered. “Yes!”

(Later, Arynn would bemoan the loss of her well-planned proposal she had been intending. The onlookers, Dazen and Tarasynora, were both the worst Tennallar to witness the moment and the best. Valentina was thankful that her complexion made it near impossible to see her blush. The Elf only managed to remember the children thirty minutes after, much to Arynn’s amusement.)

Invitations etched upon fine parchment would be delivered by pigeon to the intended guests.

Friends and Family,

As many of you know; our relationship has spanned nearly two decades. Most of which has been through our engagement where we’ve taken the time to grow and establish ourselves in these new lands. The thought of our wedding had been set off to the side for some time now as to allow us these opportunities and to support our joined Talonnii. But now, after eighteen years, we would like to cordially invite you, plus one, and or your own Talonnii to join us in The Serene State of Lurin to bring this engagement to a close and begin anew to many years of marriage.

Valentina could hear the exact moment the Tennallar's got their invitation. The Elf huffed, mentally noting the need for thicker walls, and allowed herself a small smile as she returned to her reading.
