The whole point of being a mercenary is not to be attached or aligned with any nation. Mercenaries are simply hired to fight, and if the other side offers better pay, of course the mercs would gladly switch sides. That's just a thing or two about making deals with mercenaries.

real mercenaries actually want to gain something. so switching to side B because they're giving you shit makes sense. switching back to side A and sacrificing all the stuff side B gave you does not. the ferrymen have done this dozens of times. fight a war, win a war, get given a fort or smth, give it up immediately without a fight next time they switch sides, rinse and repeat. it's incredibly boring.

the flays forged empires. the reivers maintained a consistent front against one. the ferrymen r ADHD patients pre-adderall

I have been on both sides of Ferrymen situations in like 2/3 years of being around actively. Both sides with them, and against them (way back during early Arichsdorf days) have been pretty enjoyable - 10/10 will say this again. Bandits and Mercenaries (which the ferrymen fall under) need conflict, and even more the server needs it. The veletz war created a drastic atmosphere due to the ferrymen and the groups that took their appeal, although many people chose to try and log off to avoid it.

It was a certainly a tedious modreq against us time, but it was fun to log in and see the crowds after they captured prisoners of war. We can't be keyboard warriors complaining about the consequences of these groups that are ultimately here to challenge the status quo and provide a much more enjoyable atmosphere.  Otherwise the majority of the server gets too comfortable in tunnels sharing tea (but not all of us want to wait around doing nothing for 3 months again and again until another coalition war happens).

Now will you please release me so I can go back and build more terrain? I ain't even going to get rep for this, its on PAGE 8

This is incredibly spot on. I wrote up a bigger post that I ditched but this sums it up much better. Flays were scary because they were invested in the IRP consequences. Shit, even guys like DPMAGICIAN loved political scheming RP, which made their PvP that much ******* scarier. Their icy RP personas were believable. The Ferrymen have no spine, no agenda, no plan. It’s just a club.

I will say that the Ferrymen have a much better temperament than the old PvP groups. I saw Flays flash their guns on old show yourself threads, and I can’t even tell you the racist shit they used to say on their TeamSpeak. But you can have an edge without flashing swastikas everywhere. I just miss a PvP group with as much bite OOCly as they give in character. It’s hard to sit through a bandit encounter knowing he’s gunna get it on with an Azdrazi slay queen princess afterwards — these are not people I would take seriously, ever

1/10. A ferryman member will message me “Moo.” Once in a blue moon to get me to breed cows for him. Don’t recommend.

I think some of the points are that it doesn't challenge the status quo though.

Ironically like some of the others are saying, the brand of conflict itself is becoming stale. It's just the same cycle now for like 4 years.

If something like EOM or whatever actually came out of these wars one day it would be much more interesting. Granted server rules and how hard it is to do shit like that does play a big role, but you get what I mean.

As an outsider the goal just seems to be fighting for fighting sake, and it kinda feels stale since 2021, and like 50% of people have a character called Dicky Dickyson and don't actually play outside of raids.

Overall, I am not opposed to conflict rp. In fact, I love running events that impose some sort of large-scale conflict on players. Another obvious iteration of this is the Ferryman or a pvp-based conflict group. This premise is something that should remain on the server but overall, I have had terrible experiences with ferrymen. My most blatant example of this was a raid conducted early last year during the Petran Civil War. The majority of the ferrymen during that encounter were incredibly toxic and brought down the seriousness of the roleplay with single sentence emotes and egregious power gaming. (They also irply killed children which isn't cool) This and other instances have changed my perspective on ferryman.

I do know however, that there are chill players who play bandit personas. I have had interactions with them before and these are refreshing. I enjoy adding conflict to my persona's story but when it is blatantly toxic (lotc is not a COD lobby) it brings down the experience and brings down the view of the entire group.

ok everything else u said is fair and I'm not discrediting that but why is it unacceptable to kill children in rp genuinely curious what the perspective is here
