THE FORGOTTEN CALLING

Mons Avarson, though by no means a Canonist, found himself nodding along as he read the missive. "This raises my opinion of canonism more than anything the so-called church has done... if it is their job to make converts, I think the Curia should all be fired."

A young Acolyte by the name of Lucian happens upon this missive and reads it with keen interest.

"Confusing times for the Faithful... to side with a Church condemning a large swathe of the flock, or to side with a large swathe of the flock condemning the Church?"

After a moment of consideration, and a quick signing of the Cross, he utters solemnly

"May GOD and GOD alone guide my heart."

A LETTER FROM LEMON HILL

To: Bishop Godfrey of Casica

23th of Horen's Calling, in the year of our Lord GOD 2021

Dear Bishop,

In response to your missive, I would like to inform you that I shall personally not accept any lesson in morality from those who have abandoned the Lord GOD, the Most Omnipotent, the King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords. They have refused to abide by the final ruling of His Holiness' Curia, thus causing a schism within our Holy Mother Faith—an act that severs them from the spiritual authority of our Holy Mother Church, which is, in truth, inseparable from it.

Furthermore, I remind you that Joren Manfred of House Barbanov-Bihar has been excommunicated and declared anathema for his egregious pursuit of war against the Church (To the Interdicted and Excommunicated, 2020). In this regard, Canon Law unequivocally states the following concerning anathematization:

"§1. The purpose of anathematization is the protection of Canonists from sinful organizations, individuals, or doctrines.
§2. The form of anathematization is a prohibition on Canonists from associating with, professing, or supporting the subject of anathema.
§3. That which is anathema is judged to be contrary to the promotion of virtue.
§4. Canonists residing in lands under the rule of one who has been pronounced anathema should make all efforts to overthrow them, or failing that, to flee their rule."
(Chapter 6, Title IV, Codex Iurius Canonici Danielus Pontifex, Second Edition)

Additionally, Canon Law further declares:

"§9. A person who violates a proclamation of anathematization has committed a crime." (Chapter 2, Title II, Codex Iurius Canonici Danielus Pontifex, Second Edition)

Thus, by the authority of Canon Law, I remind you that all Canonists must uphold the proclamation of anathematization issued by His Holiness' Curia. They must refrain from associating with, professing, or supporting the anathema leader of Haense. Moreover, those residing under his rule are bound by duty to overthrow him or, if unable, to flee from his dominion.

I implore you, therefore, to submit to the rulings of His Holiness' Curia—lest you, too, seek to face excommunication from our Holy Mother Church.

Sincerely,

Fr. Marc Galbraith of Lemon Hill.

Sitting upon bench within the square of Eldwyn, a duel between two mali' taking place just beyong his view, Sorcaril would study the public letter. He'd read it keenly as an immense ebony axe sat on his lap.

"Brother, in the coming years what shall weigh more, the bodies my axe takes or the paper that's wasted on these condemnations?"

@Holyland

Placing it aside for a moment, he'd clap loudly towards the dueling elves

"Block your body Valian-!"

An emphatic grunt would leave the Valian's body as Khiiral delivered a punch towards the mali'thill's kidneys. Sorcaril would wince, his head tilting downwards once more towards the missive.

Somewhere, an old machine spirit far removed from the war, a magi who had not taken up arms for either side and did not plan to due to their retirement from the world, recalled another instance in which a High Pontiff had sanctioned the pagan invasion of Canonist lands against an anathemized monarch...

The monarch in question was the Emperor of Oren at the time, who, like King Josef, had suffered greatly due to the folly and schemes of various councilors within the halls of his palace. Like Josef, Philip too had been excommunicated, perhaps understandably in retrospect considering what had transpired, and his citizens too had stood to bear the burden for the mistakes of his advisors. They clearly remembered writing to warn Everard about establishing this precedent at the time on behalf of the Canonist peoples of their province, one which was not heeded as the land their house was built upon was temporarily annexed by a state ran by said pagans with the Church's full backing.

Quietly, as she read over the bishop's writings, she lamented the precedent that was set that day. In principle, the Church using pagans to fight fellow canonists should never be suffered. It was wrong back then, and in theory, it should also be wrong now. And yet, that was the way of the world. Nobody had objected to this at the time, there had been no lamentations or mourning within the priesthood, and thus the practice had been normalized in a multitude of wars since.

Alas, with this bag having been opened and the cat having subsequently escaped, this was likely the way the world would continue to be. It was on that somber thought that the machine spirit grumbled, returning to reading a tome on alchemy.

As Ed Pitchy Reads over the Missive.

"This is simple, is it not."

The GOD loving potato farmer thinks to himself in his humble peasant farm.

"The evil Horenic Covenant must have brainwashed this man, he must eat my potatoes farmed in GOD states to seek GOD once again."

He gives a few light nods tending to his potatoes for all the GOD loving soldiers in the church states.

Another situation that exemplifies this issue is the decision of the Church States and its premier to appoint as 'protectors' individuals with a well-known history of disloyalty to the Church. The passage of time does not alter facts; rather, it only amplifies their significance, much like wine that matures with age. Likewise, the undeniable reality remains that the Church's image is tarnished by figures whose affiliations of yore, including ties to the now-defunct Veletz, cast a long, long shadow over its credibility.

"He must be talking about me. But he does not remember my years under Caius, as Holy Ser. Nor the affirmations of my family's purity, as confirmed by Deunoro. No. He must fear someone capable of doing the Curia's bidding when it acts not in the favor of his homeland. I can barely remember Winburgh's white walls, for I must have been six winters old, though the attempts made on my life as a boy ever since never left." said the Holy Marshal to a close adherent of his. "I am just the one they failed to kill."

It was time for war, nothing could change that. May the victor be decided by God alone, upon the field of battle, for it is not in the interpretations of men that Divine truth is discovered.

Of all the cardinals Erika Kortrevich had appealed to, bringing forth her concerns on the operation of Canon Law, the legality and morality of posthumous excommunication, and a plea to serve penance in Karl’s stead should her arguments fall on deaf ears, it was only Godfrey Cardinal Casica who listened with any sense of compassion and thoughtfulness. Her own Patriarch Jorenus pontificated to her with all the patronising sympathy of a man thrice his age, while the Lector-Cardinal had met her with pure hostility bordering on the unhinged. King Anorhil himself had seemed a reasonable enough man… But he had already made up his mind and charted his course long before Erika appeared, distraught, in the cavernous halls of Minas Aranath.

She would continue to set her thoughts to paper, but as this missive from the former Cardinal passed her attention, the biting sense of urgency eased. She could now take her ponderous time, weaving her analysis of the laws and scriptures into her wider narrative of the war coming to be known as the Clash of Crown and Crozier

Father Witmar wipes his forehead after co-writing the missive alongside Brother Matteo and Bishop Godfrey, gazing up at the sky in silent contemplation. In the midst of an already turbulent world, he hopes to stir the waters further, seeking only the triumph of the true faith.

It took us months upon months for this, brethren, but it is never too late to pursue what is right.”

Vincenzo’s grip on the missive tightened as he read. When he reached the final lines, Vincenzo shook his head before tearing the parchment apart, then looking to his Brothers. "This is not a war of ambition. This is a war for the soul of Canondom. For too long, sin has been allowed to fester, heresy tolerated, apostates welcomed, blasphemy ignored. The enemies of GOD have grown bold, thinking the faithful weak, thinking we would kneel. They were wrong. And now, when they see the reckoning upon them, they scramble to mask their fear with false virtue." A brief pause. "GOD has already seen the outcome of this war, and thus the answer will be revealed on the battlefield."
