  3. THE CHARTER OF THE FREE PORT OF CHAMBERY 19th of Sun’s Smile, 1927 IC | 19th of Sun’s Smile, 131 SA We the Chamberian people, in order to secure a sanctuary where the Celestial Values and the pursuit of knowledge might be upheld, do enter into an agreement with the greater Commonwealth of the Petra in order to create a Free Port where these might safely be sought. The Commonwealth of the Petra and the Free Port of Chambery do therefore affirm this charter to serve as a contract between our two polities: I.) The town of Chambery-sur-Petra, also to be known as the Free Port of Chambery, shall be given the status of vassalage as a free city within the Commonwealth to serve as both a port of trade and a sanctuary of free enterprise. II.) Furthermore, the Free Port of Chambery shall be recognized as a separate polity and entity from the archducal capital and the various seats of the nobility. It shall therefore be granted full political autonomy and the ability to manage its own internal affairs within the Commonwealth. The selection of its leaders shall not be infringed upon in any way. III.) Founded on the principles of liberty, free enterprise, and the defense of the rights of the individual, the hereditary peerage and other aristocracy of the Commonwealth shall hold no sway over the free riverland peoples of Chambery-sur-Petra, apart from the nation’s sovereign. IV.) Those independent businesses and guilds which reside within the Free Port of Chambery shall be allowed to freely host their headquarters within its municipal borders, engage in international dealings, issue publications, and train personnel without hindrance or persecution. V.) The Free Port of Chambery shall retain the sole power to tax, or exempt from tax, those that reside within its municipal boundaries. VI.) In return, Chambery-sur-Petra will provide a stream of taxation revenue to the Commonwealth of a reasonable amount to be agreed between both the government of the Free Port and the government of the Commonwealth. VII.) Although a majority Canonist settlement, the private practice of religious and cultural traditions held by minorities who reside within the Free Port of Chambery shall be permitted within its municipal borders. VIII.) Chambery-sur-Petra shall retain the ability to appoint a sheriff or a constabulary to arbitrate disputes and keep the peace within its borders, should such become a necessity in the future. SIGNED, HER MOST SERENE GRACE Renilde I, by the Grace of GOD, Archduchess of the Petra, Marquise de Val d’Estenou, Countess of Temesch and Moere, Baroness of Garmont, Valfleur, Vallagne-en-Petra, and of the Phoenixspire, Defender of Liberty The Rt. Hon. Elizabeth Brae-Wittenbach, Provisional Chairwoman of the CCCC
  4. "Perfect." Renilde told her new River Council, rolling up the soon-to-be referenced-to document and putting it in a nearby drawer. "We'll bring this up at court tonight."
  5. “Dame Catherine, how I love you so. I remain with a vision of you watching over the River Petra and protecting the heartlands from the Mori ‘til your final breath. I will cherish our time together forevermore.”
  6. The Trial of Ad’ah Penned by Her Serene Grace, Archduchess Renilde I of the Petra 6th of Tobias’ Bounty, 1926 Greetings to the beings who inhabit this miraculous land, It has come to the attention of myself and the council of my realm that a member of our vassal state has committed a heinous crime. To dispense proper and fair justice, I call Shire King Cyris Collingwood and King Odin Freysson Ruric to stand by me as we three oversee the trial of Adaranth Ravamyar of the Redclyf Clan. All involved with the incident are highly encouraged to come forth to the trial to speak as witness to the crime to help in determining a proper punishment for the defendant. The trial will take place in one and a half Saint’s days. Lookers-on are encouraged to attend, but please be respectful of the court’s proceedings. O SAINTE RÈGNE PETRÉRE, HER GRACE, Renilde I, By the Grace of GOD, Archduchess of the Petra, Countess of Temesch and Moere, Marchioness of the Eastern March, Hero of the Petra
  7. “I’ll **** with this. Laurens!!!!” She hollered, uttering in quiet tones for him to get together the riverfolk with their torches and pitchforks. @Chorale__
  8. Renilde reads the missive with wide, unblinking eyes. “Good for her, to tell her truth like this,” she told her tea partner, Sir Laurens, over the rim of her cup, eyes crinkled into a smile. @Chorale__
  9. Renilde contemplated the news which caused a deep line to form between her brows. She’d never liked the King of Aaun, and it was obvious that he didn’t like her either - his only saving grace was that of his wife, Queen Eleanor, always cleaning up the messes of the childish Charlie’s temper tantrums in his tow. Yet, was it right for her to be relieved by the old man’s death? It was not by her hand, so certainly she needn’t feel guilt. It was not something she hoped for, so no repentance would be necessary. Still, a feeling lingered in her chest of unease over Charlie’s death, and she found herself on the way to the church where Father Blackwater waited to listen to her woes.
  10. “My friend,” murmured the Archduchess in something of sorrowful defeat. The last Renilde had heard, Laetitia had been thriving in her life apart from the Commonwealth, both in Balian and Haense. With a hand cupped over her mouth and tears running down her cheeks, Renilde read the letter designated for herself, making a silent vow to uphold her deceased friend’s wishes. No one would talk ill of Laetitia - not in the Archduchess’s presence, anyway. Hours after having received the news, and over a mulled cider, Renilde contemplated how she might honor Laetitia’s memory after her sudden passing. She pulled out the letter from her erstwhile friend and scanned it again, tears still flowing but more so in mourning than from the shock of unanticipated loss. “Oh, sassy girl…” She chuckled to herself amid her sniffles and emotions. “You will not be forgotten, I will make certain of that.”
  11. “Laurens,” Renilde mentioned to her dearest old friend distractedly, eyes on the newest published document alongside many others to come. “We should host a party - a ball - no, a masquerade to celebrate our newest arrivals of the Commonwealth, and to acclimate them to our way of life. Looking inward amid this cold, cold war is what my father would want us to do.” Finally, the Archduchess glanced up from her latest missive, rubbing her tired left hand with the right. “What say you, Laurens?” @Chorale__
  12. “I wish humanity could do this.” Renilde sighed as the missive crossed her desk, head cradled in her hands as she wondered just how they did it.
  13. “Oh my god Laurens, did you let the children copy this down with their crayons for penmanship practice?” Renilde eyed the document at arms length with a warm smile amid the company of her newest tenants.
  14. “My own sister was behind this plot with Paul Monault and some feller named ‘Elf King Vexaay’, as well as one of my old servants, Philippe something… he wears a spiffy hat.” Renilde told her rescuers on the way back to Karosgrad, distraught and weary from her drawn out captivity that lasted weeks, all without reprieve from her traitorous sister’s yammerings-on. “You all fought so well; I could hear Marius's commands from my cell, as well as Laurens’ battle cry,” she assured the united troops, once arrived back to the safety of Haense. “The Adrians, though… I don’t know if they were or were not behind this too… Paul mentioned that they were not to tell the Adrians, yet you never ******* know.” Upset, the woman’s gaze grazed over the remaining troops who loitered the area, still on guard, and murmured a genuine “Thank you, all,” before heading off to be medically assessed.
  15. WRIT OF DISOWNMENT Penned by the Archduchess’ Most Loyal Servant, the Chanzlé, Sir Laurens Halcourt, Confirmed by Her Serene Grace, the Archduchess of the Petra, Renilde I 18th of Sigismund’s End 1919 LET IT BE KNOWN TO ALL; For rebelling against her sworn State and allowing the capture of her sister, the Archduchess – the rightful Matriarch of the House of Petra, Renilde I, does see fit to issue the disownment of her sister, formerly Dame Charlotte Roberta of the House of Petra. Charlotte Roberta Petra is hereby expelled from the Commonwealth of the Petra, dissolving any and all titles/land arrangements that had been made prior. Due to his affiliation, the former Prince of Sedan, Frederick, shall also be subjected to these same terms. Any and all titles for the Principality of Sedan under Frederick II given by the Commonwealth are hereby ordered into abeyance. IN NOMINE DE, HER GRACE, Renilde I, By the Grace of GOD, Archduchess of the Petra, Countess of Temesch and Moere
  16. “So… the house’s traditions and values are to beat children, kill men, and generally display disgrace wherever they go? Noted.” Renilde forwarded a letter to her dear friend Azrielle, mentioning as such.
  17. Renilde, having heard the tales of Gwendel’s abuse over the years from the very Azrielle herself (who fought in The Petrine Civil War against her own misguided kin, won, yet found herself on the outside of her family), sent the missive to a the woman with a letter of her own that hedged along the lines of support and commendation. “Azrielle, my friend, a person who I’ve called family ever since the one you had did not cherish you, I write to offer whatever encouragement you might need during this time. I apologize for your brother’s ignorant behavior backed only by poor excuses and unbelievably terrible judgement. I pray that he answers for his decades of crimes, wrongdoings, and generally bad etiquette regarding all things he’s been involved in, and that you may rest assured that this fool will no longer wield the power necessary to do what he has done for far too long. Godspeed, and may Justice find him, ~R. H.” @Phersades
  18. “I cannot wait!” Renilde said to the newest inductee to the River Court, proud of the proactive steps she had taken of her own volition.
  19. “I wonder when the Vavasour will return from his trip…” Renilde pondered, unaware that her Maresc has been brutally murdered - and without reason - in the forests surrounding the once-revel territory.
  20. A DECLARATION Issued and Confirmed by Her Grace, the Archduchess of the Petra, Renilde I 17th of Sigismund’s End, 1916 TO OUR BELOVED SUBJECTS, Today is a most heinous day not only to the Petran realm, but to the heartlands as a whole, and perhaps even humanity as a whole: on an evening where I formally planned to join the fight with our allies to the north, and their friends in the desert – to devote the Petrine cause to aiding a rightful duke being anointed with the Adrian Coronet – were we savagely attacked. Myself, three of my Round Table Councilors, Regent Sigismund Varoche, his son Charles Varoche, and an Adrian named Callahan were sat in the meeting chambers of the Estenpromé, discussing how Petra can help. We decided on the terms to be set in our ‘’Writ of Avoidance’, and laid the document out to be similar to that of the one His Eminence, Father Iosif released on Haense’s behalf. The terms were agreeable, but we also sought to add more stipulations before being interrupted. The people just kept pouring in - people I did not recognize armed with lethal weaponry. Quickly, did these invaders set about the room, roughing up my dear friend Sir Laurens Henri before binding his hands up. It was then that I heard the command - and from a much more familiar voice. When the woman who had tied my hands had moved out of my line of view, I saw them: Joseph Vasile and the anathema, Heinrik, himself. These two had once been loyal friends to the Petrans, ones that would show up when we were in need, ones that supported us during our own civil war. And this is how you treat that same friend now? With a raid in the dark, hoping no one would notice? No. It is now that we must take a side, as one of the few remaining Canonist Princedoms to declare a side during this ongoing conflict (if any). We ask King Georg I of Haense and King Alexander I of Balain to allow us a signature on their own alliance, ‘A Polar Concurrence’, for we stand for the same goal and wish to aid in any which way possible. O SAINTE RÈGNE PETRÉRE, Her Grace, Renilde I, By the Grace of GOD, Archduchess of the Petra, Countess of Temesch and Moere
  21. "Damn he mad," Renilde uttered over the rim of her wine glass, struck by the conviction of the Aaunic King. "I must meet with this Regent of Adria and sign on with the 'Writ of Avoidance' like Haense. I wouldn't want to be caught up in Charlie's wrath." With a shudder, the Archduchess clinked her glass to her long-time drinking partner's own, sipping, then continuing. "Will you set that meeting up, Laurens? I will draft the writ in the meantime!" @Chorale__
  22. "I cannot fricken wait." The Archduchess held the Petran-Haeseni babies in her arms, only sometimes succumbing to their devoted father's pleas to cradle his 'little warriors'.
  23. “Oy vey…” The archduchess remarked, all too familiar with the stresses of an internal conflict. She prayed for all of her friends involved, on either side.
