[!] A jaunty goblin courier bounces around Arcas to distribute a carefully written missive to any Orc who would read it. It reads as follows:
Bruddahs agh Ziztahs-
The ancient law that we have conducted ourselves to has been passed down from the first generation of Krug himself and has continued to this point. I write now to those who are wrought with despair from our most recent defeat and to those in the future who may also question our ways in trying times so that our ways may be better understood, respected and maintained for all time. I am Nazark’Gorkil, elder of my clan, unendingly loyal to Krugmar, warrior of countless wars, Farseer, a laborer to serve my nation and spirits, a former wargoth and rex, one who has lived since the distant times of Athera and as one who has seen much. Many brilliant triumphs, powerful alliances, and yes, stunning defeats. May my perspective on the absolute and ancient law of “Might Makes Right” strengthen and invigorate a united fervor and kinship for all who have Krug’s blood within their veins and a Spirit’s fire in their heart.
The code we all know states clearly “Might makes right!” and this is true though many young uruks have failed to truly understand the meaning of this. Right is a word with multiple meanings and they both stand true in our ancient law. It establishes that a single person’s might may give them the authority to do as they wish and that authority must be recognized by all; likewise strength proven in the arena is to be considered merit enough to support all that the fighter stands for. Though this is not to say that they are beyond question or criticism, such is required so that people may know when they should train in order to contest the one who is proven to be strongest. Though ultimately if a leader is unable to be bested in a duel then it would be entirely unjustified to abandon them or disobey them. Though so far as I have written this code is unfounded by anything except tradition, which is worth much but it is of paramount importance that we now understand why that tradition came to be so that we can teach it to those who have lost their way.
- A depiction of Krug in Iblees’s flames as they battled -
No matter what is said about Krug’s kin it is undeniable that we are a people of war. Though firstly we are a people of honor, no respectable orc would say otherwise. So we ought have an honor code to conduct ourselves in times of war, one that best suits us for victory. Our ancient code is befitting to these requirements in many such ways, such ways being that they encourage all men to train themselves into preparedness for combat. Should any man take issue with the deeds of a commander they ought be prepared to challenge the commander’s right and in turn they will need to have developed themselves to be stronger and a better fighter. Should even half of our men do such then we would be legends among the world, though in a functioning culture of orcs where all are prepared to challenge each other then the world is ours to bend to our will. Without such incentive we would perhaps have a system where men are appointed to lead rather than earning such and needing to maintain their capabilities to serve, this would leave our men to be hollow shells of warriors. Prideful fighters without substance and eventually fathers to craven sons who have seen the weakness and consequences of the former generation. Such a system would be a plague that sucks the strength from Krug’s blood and bring dishonor to everything that his kin stand for. The preparedness for combat that each orc ought to know will be known in no other way unless you would have the soldiers whipped like mules by a master, stripped of their pride and searching for a way to escape their conscription.
Without our ancient code we are surely damned to bicker among ourselves like the twigs who praise their ability to fight with tongue and wit, leaving their men to be weak. The only truly strong elf known to us was Phaedrus of Yar clan, one who led a war among his kin and witnessed their untapped potential. It wasn’t until he brought himself humbly to Krugmar that he was able to give himself to our ways and reach the pinnacle of his aptitude. He witnessed that when conflict is sought to be settled by words rather than true strength that division and treachery lies in the shadow of such a structure. So tear it down, leave the truth exposed so we may know where true strength lies. Each clan war in history has crippled the strength of Krug’s kin, it has robbed us of workers, warriors, praisers, inventors, leaders, kubs and all who had not reached the zenith of their potential. This is unacceptable. Each of these conflicts were able to be settled by a klomp, I should know best of all. When a clan war threatened my kin while I assumed the position of Rex it was a hard deduction to make but even when you do not see eye to eye with an opponent it is an injustice to your own kin not to settle such a manner that preserves the strength of the orcs as a whole. I accepted the duel, I trained, I fought, I lost and afterwards I was loyal to my new Rex. This was a weakness of my own but I do not regret my course of action for it spared the lives of many uruks, breathed life into the bond that they have among themselves now and it ensured their opportunity to fight against a greater evil in their lives. Though an evil stares a leader in the face when a klomp is laid before them, that evil being the thought to refuse it. Should they do so they will bring a schism upon the orcs, one that cripples them and robs them of the opportunities I proudly retained for my brothers when I saw this evil. To rob any honorable brother of these things and to weaken the forces of Krug as a whole will surely bar Kor’s gates to you, there is no doubt to it in my mind.
- The depiction of a Braduk charging into a Clan War -
It had once puzzled me, what the meaning of honor was, until recently. I had once thought it was simply staying true to your word, another time I thought it was doing whatever was right in the eyes of the spirits, and yet once again I contemplated on if it would be to do whatever would best serve my clan or nation. Though it truly touches upon many aspects which cannot be easily summarized, each of such aspects though should be known to all orcs because they each shine brightest in battle and in times of war. To begin our dissection of honor let’s better understand what it is as an abstract concept. It is a value that is attributed to a person or group of people in order to grade their standing among a group, or an evaluation of their reputation. This value needs to be able to be earned and lost, such is why large groups are difficult to manage honor within. When a group gets larger the ability to police peoples general actions and reputation is harder because less people know each other, this makes a great function for clans so that they can police within themselves and then have a reputation as a whole group for the other clans to judge them by. Though of course when it comes to making a judgement about a person or groups honor there needs to be some basis for this, the basis for the entirety of the existence of orcs has been based upon a person’s strength or the strength of the leader. This strength is tested in a duel which displays their integrity. Even when they’re fighting for what they stand for will they resort to cheating to get it and perhaps schism and weaken their people as a whole? Or will they gracefully have their defeat and admit that they are wrong and perhaps need to improve themself for a future challenge? This is the operating code of honor that people are judged upon and it tests not only integrity but also how important a person’s values are, will they train, fight and bleed for what they find righteous? If not then is it worth any merit at all? Honor itself flows among peers, where you remain true to yourself and them. Honor likewise flows up a chain of command under Krug’s Code, it tests the orc’s capacity to have discipline, lead and work for what they stand for. The tenants of self improvement that are encouraged by the Code are of paramount importance and are able to grant a sense of satisfaction in victory and a desire for inner reflection in defeat. Authorities are able to be held accountable easily, abuses of power can be contested by any person and it makes sure that the leaders do not weaken in any manner so long as they wish to retain their rank, which of course all ties into the overarching theme of reputation but it concludes that theme with physical consequences and a fallout of social rank. This drive for self improvement that is necessary to ensure a strong community will undoubtedly awaken a flame within the hearts of aspiring Orcs. This flame tells them a truth that will guide them in life, that being that they should do good things for themselves and the people around them. Do these things with deliberation and force, for whatever the price of doing good things for yourself and those around you may be crimson blood, it may be salt set tears or hard earned sweat but these things are all negligent in comparison to the regret that may be earned if they go unpaid. Moisture is sacred within the desert but when an uruk is paying these tolls of their water it is not hard to deduce that the payment that the uruk will bring, from having bettered himself, will pay it’s way over a hundredfold. Instilling this message of honor within our cubs or clansmen is something that we should be obliged to, for we have a level of responsibility for molding them into the person they will be when they are at Kor’s gate. Should we submit a craven to Stargush’Stroh? No, for they will surely be denied entry. Lest we send a brother fraught with treachery? Surely not, for such will be reflected upon us when we stand before The Gate. Rather we should instill within them strength, courage, honor and mastery of the self. For if we teach all of our people these things then there can be no doubt that those attributes will be reflected upon our legacy. Surely it will be known that we are uruks of virtue who have the strength to defend it.
So what of those without honor? Those whitewashes who have done deeds they cannot defend and likewise nobody stands proud to defend them in their place. What ought we do with these slithering serpents who once leached our moisture and presently pumps shame through Krug’s blood? I have no perscription on how they ought to be treated, that is solely for those stronger than them to condone when the time comes. Such is a privilege granted purely by the Code of Krug, so long as you can demonstrate your right in the arena to torment a whitewash then that right is yours alone and any orc of merit should treasure such for when a day comes where perhaps they wish to extract a vengeance then that chance will already have been within their reach.
Our blessing to honor ought to be sufficiently explained at this point but in our society we must recognize that it works in tandem with our curse. Bloodlust. We are creatures of war, this cannot be changed, this of course means we will each taste victories and defeats in our life. The goal of all people of Krug’s blood should be to optimize those victories and minimize the defeats, thus so we can bring honor to the world, make our spirits proud, and do our duty to our current kin. These battles that we submit ourselves to and that we are challenged upon are of unparalleled importance and it is important that we conduct them with courage, strength, honor and a sense of competition. These values are effectively paralleled in Krug’s Code and they teach our youngest cub these traits from the first moment that they learn what a klomp is. This is important because it is these battles that we must prepare them for, these will be the moments where they are tested most. The moments where they will be able to implement all of the values that they stand for. The moments where they will carve a legacy for themselves. No other system except one lead with a whip will appropriately prepare them to fight appropriately, and Krug’s Code manages to vanquish the whip and instead replace it with pride and honor. For that we must understand how important it is to embrace Krug’s Code and study the meanings behind three simple words.
- A depiction of the old Craotor’Lur -
The Spirits are the only greater power in existence who are worthy of our respect. Why is that? Is it because our shamans say so? Is it because Krug himself is a spirit? Is it because they look fondly upon us? The spirits likewise are creatures who value honor and strength above all things. The bond between spirit and shaman is that based upon a pact, a trust based upon honor, founded upon the shaman’s reputation. Because of our blessing we are natural shamans, far more so than that of a human who may flippantly break their oath out of convenience. Similarly Spirits are also creatures of war. They are always competing and battling against each other for dominion over their rivals or they are jockeying for positions of power against the other lessers or greaters. Unending competition, all of which causes the spirits to better themselves or trickle into irrelevancy due to weakness, proving themselves undeserving of praises. Orcs will admire Spirits and Spirits will admire Orcs due to their similarities. Though you can see the potential danger in casting away the traditional law that has kept us Orcs trying to remain strong. You can see the careless abandon that is invoked when people try to cast out the raw competition. You can understand the foolishness of those who would tear out the root of our honor code and cast it aside like some damaged tool. Let this serve as a warning to those proud fools then, for their consequences will be paid in full at Kor’s gate and it would bring delight to those who are still bound by honor to send them there.
Of the spirits, we are most intimate with Ancestors. The ones we knew, loved, fought beside. Our progenitors who bravely forged a place for us to belong in the world. The ones who we live with stalwart honor for, so that we may be reunited once again with them beyond Kor’s Gate. Generation upon generation of descendants of Krug. Thousand of souls who have lived and gone on to their rightful place in Stargush. All of which lived their lives true to the Code of Krug. They also bore witness to victories, defeats and all the facets of life that we are faced with. Our ancestors had their own struggles, all similar to our own where they remained loyal to our tradition because they believed in it. So I ask unto all, do you think yourself wiser than the leagues of ancestors? Which brother or sister has the unbridled arrogance to look upon and insult our kin who have passed on by asserting that all of their creeds were inferior to some untried method? Which fool opposes our spirits by spitting upon their legacy, cracking the cornerstone of their lives, tossing carelessly the law that they all dutifully maintained and affirmed to be appropriate? For it is without a doubt that any person who asserts themselves as this revolutionary is standing upon a mountain that was painstakingly built by thousands of brothers and trying to convince others to leap from it’s summit.
- A depiction of Kor’s Gate -
Krug’s law is absolute. Should there ever be a conflict that is complicated beyond what it ought to be it can only be because a klomp is refused, ignored or cheated. The code we live by is a test of faith, but the faithful will be rewarded. There will be no grand conflict outside of two brothers in a physical challenge against each other, this spares the lives of many. The value of the arena maintains that our people are strong of spirit and body, rather than conniving beasts of tongue and treachery. The absoluteness of this law ensures that every person has the same rights. The right to challenge what they oppose, to stand true for what they believe, the opportunity to defy any decree unbefitting of them. They are given the right, from Krug himself and it is paid into through the lives of each of our ancestors and paid by yourself and brother by adhering dutifully to it. This right is beyond that of Rex or even spirit to alter on a whim, it is a right that is sworn into each orc in the womb. Their blood is the oath to Krug’s Code so that they may be afforded the right of their kin, the right their ancestors had and to secure such a right for their own kin. When any person in born with Krug’s blood inside of them they are a continuation of centuries of souls that lived by the same code. “Might Makes Right!” Any who rejects this code can no longer dare to call themselves an orc, they are a lesser creature. They have abandoned all their ancestors, they forsake the meaning of what it means to be an orc. They favor a baseless system of honor which is doomed to dissolve into the exact damning weakness that our enemies have had for the last hundreds of years. The absoluteness of Krug’s Code should not falter so much as the heart beats within your chest, it’s constant truth is the basis upon which we will always truly hold ourselves to. It is the foundational fact that sew us together and if it should begin fray then we will find ourselves run amok with dishonor, crippled with weakness and cast apart from our beloved spirits and ancestors.

- A depiction of the Mau’Madur swamp -
To Mau’Madur:
I will not plead with you lot. I will not grovel for your return. I write these truths to spare my young kin from the mistakes that they are making. A loss of war is damaging to who we are as a people, because we’ve lost those we love, it sleights the spirits that we’ve made promises to. Though these things are not debilitating, these things are wounds we will from. Do not blame Krug’s Code for this loss. A loss is simply an admission that you were not yet strong enough to defend what you believe, it is simply bringing to light that you have a need to improve. To strengthen yourself so that you may best represent your truths. This is a truth that was made evident when I fought Leydluck. I was not strong enough to defend the desires I held high, such as to remain affable with Vintas. Though I should have been, I learned from my defeat and I understand my own need to train for my beliefs. Yet I maintain that even in my defeat it was not the most telling failure of myself, such would have been to not fight for what I believed at all. When Leydluk made himself Targoth and his Raguks ran amok there was no Lur to lay challenge to how he conducted himself. This was not a failure of Krug’s Code, this was a failure of action upon Krug’s Code by those who watched idly by. Though we are now in a state where your lot has abandoned the code, I’ll not taunt you for it because the truths behind Krug’s Code should be daunting to all. Though I would explain where this situation leaves all of Krug’s kin. Weaker. More likely to be made a prey for our enemies, directly because of your actions. Divided. There will always be those who hold Krug’s Code in their very soul, with this separation you taunt them to kill you and make no mistake that that day will come. Those who hold the ancient way in their heart will not be able to be exterminated entirely, should you remain disloyal to the law of your ancestors those who are will plague you for your entire existence. No uruk wants this to be the case though unless some side of this conflict is brought to heel then it shall be, and it shall be a shame upon you all for not welcoming the ancestral challenge of a klomp from your opposers. Should you truly be the strongest then those who oppose you will fall in line and follow the strongest dutifully, though if you are not and yet you claim a right to lead then you will leave your days in fear and you will watch as the horrifying truths that I have explained to you in the entirety of this message blossom before you.
Meet with your kin while you may. Written with hope.
