GM Activity Project

Hail friends of Malinor. Today I am here to unveil a project the GM Team has been working on regarding Region Activity. There’s been a lot of discussion regarding LotC being stale, roleplay being too spread, a difficulty finding roleplay, everyone being in small personal plots, etc. So, we thought it beneficial to do a project to get the best possible idea we could get of which settlements are active. It’s not perfect (you can find our detailed methodolgy here), but the general idea was to teleport to everyone on the tablist, record locations with five or more people in them, and aggregate the results over many instances.

While we don’t know exactly how we plan to use this data, it’s something we found valuable for both the staff and the playerbase to be able to access. Our hope is at the very least, we can provide the playerbase with a general snapshot of what places are presently active, and maintain data like this consistently for the foreseeable future. Some other uses for this data might include directing ET toward good places for events, having the AT encourage new players to go to active locations, helping to determine which groups will get land in 6.0, among others. Nothing is set in stone, so your feedback is obviously quite valuable.

Now, on to the data…

If you took a moment to read the document linked earlier, you’ll know that we marked down any region that had 5 or more people in it consecutively. For the sake of this project, we will consider that to be “active.” I know it’s a bit arbitrary, but the line had to be drawn somewhere, and we think this is a good threshold.

The following locations were found to be active on over 75% of our checks between June 30th and July 10th.

-veris (Veris)

-island_highelf1 (Norland)

-welvescapital (Linandria)

-marbrandfief (Haense)

-orccapital (San’raakh)

The following locations were found to be active on over 50% of our checks between June 30th and July 10th.

-suticacapital (Sutica)

The following locations were found to be active on over 25% of our checks between June 30th and July 10th.

-mcdruids (The Wandering Grove)

The following locations were found to be active on at least one of our checks between June 30th and July 10th. *

-azmarvalley (Tal’Azmar)

-welffief2 (Ker’nor)

-courlandduchy2 (Veldin/Castell)

-mardoncapital2 (Auguston)

-arcadia (Arcadia)

-dwarfsettlement1 (Tal’Ardoth)

-welfsettlement2 (Metz)

-warhawkeland (Leyu’celia)

-mordskov (Mordskov)

-ponce (Ponce)

-hariacapital (Al’Khaleed)

-asterleigh_rock (Asterleigh Rock?)

*A few regions were omitted at the request of the region owner, as they were frequented by dark magic users.

On average, approximately 60% of players were found in regions with 5 or more players in them (the remaining percentage including spawn, staff members in the build world, etc.).

On average, approximately 63% of players were found in regions with 5 or more players in them when 100 or more players were online.

On average, approximately 68% of players online were in Tahn.

On average, approximately 6% of players online were in Ceru.

On average, approximately 16% of players online were in Asul.

Some Subjective Analyses

While the goal for this project is to try and be fairly objective, there were some things that I noticed as I was conducting this first round of checks. As such, I wanted to include some impressions I got or things I noticed that I think are important.

For one, I noticed that more often than not, places that were consistently active had people regularly in open, easily accessible spaces, especially members of the group’s leadership. While this might seem obvious, it became apparent that when groups bring their RP inside and behind closed doors, their activity appears to drop, even among players regularly involved with those communities.

I also noticed that groups which had settlement-run events earlier in the day found an increase in RP many hours after the event ended.

While I expected there to be some clearly timezone-centric locations, this didn’t actually seem to be true. In fact, for the most part, it seemed like the most active locations for America-friendly times were also the most active among those online during European and Aussie-friendly times. The two exceptions were the orcs, which seem to perform a bit better during European-friendly times, and the druids, which seem to do a bit better during Aussie-friendly times. However, I think this is harder to definitively conclude from the data.

And lastly, while we don’t peak quite as highly as we used to, it would seem that’s in part because a bunch of us Americans have adopted terrible sleep schedules over the summer. Like seriously, we seem to pretty regularly be at over 100 players until like 2am EST. I don’t think that’s ever happened before, and I suspect it’s because we’ve all decided to **** regular sleeping habits for the summertime.

Conclusions

Hopefully this seemed valuable for you all to take a look at. If you missed it, you can find my methodology here and the hard data here. It’s my intent to regularly release this information (perhaps weekly) with the hopes of highlighting groups that seem to be promoting activity effectively and also helping players know where to find RP during a period when it’s apparently not so easy to come by.

Before anyone asks, yes, it is likely that the recording of this data will have some impact on what groups get land in 6.0, though how exactly we will make those determinations remains to be seen. If you have further questions about my methodology, or ideas on how the staff can use this data, that would be great!

Also, special thanks to @Creete, @Rammer and @Jaeden for assisting me with checks, and @Malimom and @Harold for the support.

If it's not on there, then there was no point in the 46 checks we did where it had 5 or more players there concurrently.
