HIS HOLINESS EVERARD VI, High Pontiff of the Church of the Canon, Archbishop of Visigia, Successor of the High Priesthood of the Church, Supreme Pontiff of the Church of True Faith, Keeper of the Canon, Missionary to Aeldin, High Servant to the Exalted's Testaments, Humble Servant of the Faithful and Vicar of GOD.

“The Lord saw the penance of Owyn, which was the death of the unrepentant.

And Owyn was made again as the light of his blade, and the great city was destroyed.”

(Gospel 5:19-20)

Most Beloved Brethren, Health and Pontifical Benediction.

There are two truths that all men must live with: our own mortality, and our capacity for sin. Some sins are greater than others, a fact that men have known since the beginning of time. In Our opinion and that of Our most learned scholars, there is no greater sin than that of blasphemy against God and blasphemy against the Church. Such a sin is the highest form of pride and ambition, one that causes men to forget about their most sacred vow: loyalty to God and His Church.

You are guilty of this sin. You interrupted your own coronation at Our hand to denounce Us and call Us a false Pontificate. Your soldiers drew steel against Us, and would surely have murdered Us if not for the intervention of the soldiers of the Brotherhood of Saint Karl. If only all Canonists were so devoted to their faith! If only you had followed their example, and known better than to betray Us, who have only ever sought the betterment of all Humanity, who are your spiritual Father and God’s chosen shepherd over all Humanity.

All men commit sin, and God grants the sacrament of confession so men may seek repentance for their sins. Despite the grave nature of the sin you have committed against Us and against God, We have seen fit to offer an opportunity for repentance. In the way that your sin was one of ultimate pride and ambition, so too shall your penance be one of ultimate humility.

You are to walk from San Luciano to Karosgrad, where We shall await you with all the citizens of Hanseti-Ruska and Our new Fidei Defensor. You shall walk barefoot, and wear nothing but a sackcloth robe, an outfit commonly worn by members of Our clergy who undertake a vow of poverty. Along the way, you may be greeted by faithful Canonists who chose not to betray their Church or their God. They will shout insults and throw waste at you. You are not to resist. Upon arriving and kneeling before Us, you shall kiss Our ring, and We shall make known the rest of your penance, intended to prevent any future attempt at such chaos. Only through this incredibly humbling endeavour shall you learn to never again allow your pride to cause you to betray your God. Remember that it is through Him that you have your power.

If you are to do this and the remainder of your penance which We shall reveal to you, then We shall consider your sins forgiven and recognize you as Prince of Savoy, to be crowned and recognized by Our Church and welcomed with open arms back into Canondom. Refuse to do so, and you shall remain outside of God’s light, where the darkness of Iblees shall overtake you and damn your soul to eternal suffering.

May God grant you the wisdom to accept the mercy We offer to you today. Know that We shall pray for you to rejoin Our flock.

@Publius

Everardus Sextus

The Dowager-Duchess of Adria sat at her desk, reading over the command of penance delivered directly from Everard VI. With a small hum, the imperial Novellen felt that this was the first step on the returning path to peace, with the Prince of Savoy being tempered for his hubris.

Holy Ser Thucydides Melphestaus read the missive, questioning the morality of it all. Encouraging canonist to insult and berate one who would soon be accepted back into their faith? Surely such actions would cause more harm than good.

Does not the Holy Scrolls teach of forgiveness rather than vengeance? A man corrupted by Iblees should be saved, not wounded and damaged making him more prone to Iblees' deceitful words.

Yet all of that is of second though to Thucydides. His true concern is in the honor and worship of mortal men, when only God should be worshipped. The kneeling before the Fidei Defensor, and kissing his ring, when he is all but a mortal man.

The ginger-haired elfess' at this point was having the time of her life. Brought into many secrets of the church and understood the morality behind every action within its function, humored recently by all the happenings, specifically the chaos from it all. Upon reading the public missive she struck her knee with a clad palm and broke out into wicked cackles, amused entirely by the ongoing events.

Beneath the mountain, High Prophet Norli smiles upon seeing the word of God, even if not his own, being enforced on the betrayers of their faith. He recalls his own experience with heretics, and pats a blood stained hammer at his side.

Olivier Laurene offered solemn acceptance of the news from an attendant. Many had known since the madness of his coronation of his long outbursts and frustrations, bold declarations and proud internal dialogues that had made themselves aloud.

From his vassals and councillors advice did he acquiesce to reason, his internal turmoil and perceived slights thrown back at him time and again as proud, as seeing himself above God.

Though perhaps he would have protested the demand before, he could not look the reality of the situation with the same resolve and declare his righteousness.

Proud was he still though. Easy enough to admit - a lot easier to admit than his folly. So much so, that he pleaded his wife not allow the children to see him in such disgrace; perhaps a point was missed in that.

He began his own missive, gloom pervading in his presence, sometimes bellowing in frustration as he came to terms with what must be done.

If there is a preferred skin for this, I’d love to have my char’s head spliced on it - maybe even with some dirt etc to appear more shabby!

John Napier applauds such a move by the Pontiff. The best solution outside of murder for the sinful snakes of Savoy was humiliation under the eyes of the LORD.

The Petite Viscountess of Orenian lands felt that the humble lives of monks should not be compared to that of a schemer, and she hoped that the sacks that Olivier were dressed in were of suitable nature as not to present similarities between a monk’s robe and these robes.

Nonetheless, Amadie hoped that this would be a strong lesson for humanity, as Canonism should bring together all those who are faithful, not a prince, nor an emperor, nor a country. With her father a clergyman, she felt it was her duty to pray for the sake of her Pontiff.

The maiden of Alstion scrutinized the missive with haste as she ascended the marble steps of the Aggarade, a perturbed expression adorning her complexion. As she proceeded passed the scratched door of her soon-to-be husband, muffled cackles would emit from beyond the barricaded room. Sliding the missive underneath his door, she’d advance to the shallows of her isolated bedchambers.
