The Tragedy of Kerwyr

As Rudok slowly led him into the throne room, Kerwyr’s eyes met with those of Gror. After a few moments of petty talk back and forth, he had accepted his fate. Drooping his head down, he awaited the blow that would sever him from all that he loved. Under his breathe he mumbled,

“This is all part of a larger, bolder strategy…”

As the blade fell upon his unprotected neck, in a split second, his life flashed before his eyes.

He remembered himself as a young boy patrolling the streets of Tal’Azwyr in the months following the Frostbeard uprising, with poverty and death all around him, he saw his clan at it’s very lowest. It was at this very young age that his hatred for Urguan and all his children began, a hatred that would flourish through him for many years, until his very last moments.

He saw himself returning to the Grand Kingdom and restoring honor to the Frostbeard Clan, raising it from the ground up to the point where it was once more considered the largest clan. Filling its ranks with new and ambitious Frostbeards, it was no longer viewed as a threat to the sovereignty of Urguan and was allowed to stay. After his father Rhewen’s return and election to King, Kerwyr pulled himself out of public life and handed the clan over to Vondan Frostbeard, a prospective and young Frostbeard leader.

When the return of Gorum Frostbeard reached Kerwyr’s ears, he swiftly came back to Dwarven society. With the Clan legend by his side, the two were able to bring the Frostbeards to even greater heights. Around this time, Algoda Frostbeard took the throne further elevating Frostbeard status in the Grand Kingdom. Around this same time Kerwyr and Wulfstag forged an alliance, creating one of the strongest political factions in the Kingdom, with 90% of population being either an Ireheart or Frostbeard.

With the death of Algoda, Kerwyr was quick to allow his friend Wulfstag the throne and pledged his support for him. It was then that Kerwyr saw the largest flaw of Dwarven society; the Senate. With the votes of lethargic Senators, who had never been seen in the city until the day of the vote, Bastion Ireheart was elected over Wulfstag, another Dwed that Kerwyr had not seen very often until that day. In disbelief, Wulfstag left the Kingdom, and with him followed the Ireheart clan which swiftly collapsed afterwards.

Unable to be led by a King like Bastion, the Frostbeards left the Kingdom in peace, moving to a keep up North which they would name Jornheim. Here, they spent many jolly days until one day Oyvind and Ironfoot arrived. They spoke of Bastion’s suicide and of Kal’Omiths imminent collapse unless something was undertaken. Coaxing Kerwyr in, Oyvind told him with the Legions support the takeover of the Grand Kingdom would be flawless and without bloodshed. He told Kerwyr that he believed in a Frostbeard bloodline. Foolishly believing that Oyvind loved his Clan, Kerwyr agreed and they set out for Kal’Omith with the Frostbeard clan behind them.

Within ten minutes, it was clear to Kerwyr that Oyvind had neither support nor army. Had it not been for Ironfoots quick thinking, the entire takeover would have failed. After an hour of argument in the Senate room, two sides had been drawn. On one side were the various clans of Urguan, on the other were the Frostbeards. Each side had their own allies, Courland on the Senators side, with the Romstuns on the Frostbeards. A swift battle proclaimed the Frostbeards victorious as they stomped the Senators and their allies into the ground.

Yet the victory was bittersweet. Soon after, Gorum and Morug, two of Kerwyr’s trusted advisors disappeared. Without two of his most competent leaders, Kerwyr was found on the losing side of a war. Despite his best efforts at fortifying Kal’Omith, the betrayal of Baldin Grandaxe, handed the city back over to the Grand Kingdom of Urguan. Rallying his Frostbeards back to Jornheim, Kerwyr prepared a final defence. It was here that the final betrayal took place. His advisor Rudok Frostbeard and Marshal Macklemore Frostbeard captured Kerwyr and delivered him to Gror Ireheart.

As his head was lopped off, Kerwyr knew deep inside.

The sons of Kaz’Ulrah would rise again.

Somewhere off in the distance, a gaunt, grey-bearded dwarf removes his bifocals, staring down at a fidgeting young beardling as he draws a raspy breath to speak.

"Did you ever hear the tragedy of Lord Kerwyr the Wise?"

Aldal Ireheart sits alone to ponder the news of Kerwyr's execution, speaking softly to nobody in particular, but to an empty room.

"'E wus foolish tehr wage war as 'e did, fehr 'e wus an intelligen' an' capable dwed, but 'e 'as cast 'imself into Vuur'Dor willingly. Kerwyr will never see Khaz'A'Dentruum, ah'm afraid. Before 'is madness took 'im, 'e wus a friend an' a confidant to meh often. P'raps eht's better ah remember 'im as 'e was, before 'is greed took 'old, an' not as deh villain 'e doied."

"Kerwyr fought for what he believed in, and that will make him enter the halls of khaz'a'dentruum without a doubt. The cowardly Ireheart that took his own life however, won't."

Barradin snorted as he thought out loud.
