GM Activity Project

Hail friends of Malinor. Today I’m here to provide you all with the second release of information regarding the GM Activity Project. If you’d like a broader explanation of why we are doing this and how we hope to potentially use this data, I encourage you to read the initial post and my methodology. However, to keep this short, our goal is to make it easier for players to find roleplay by regularly releasing information about region activity.

This time around, along with the data, I’ve shown how it matches up with last weeks if there was any sort of change. As always, if you have any questions or thoughts on other ways this data can be used, feel free to let me know.

Now, on to the data...

      The Data   <- link

If you took a moment to read the document linked earlier, you’ll know that we marked down any region that had 5 or more people in it consecutively. For the sake of this project, we will consider that to be “active.” I know it’s a bit arbitrary, but the line had to be drawn somewhere, and we think this is a good threshold.

The following locations were found to be active on over 75% of our checks between July 11th and July 17th.

  • welvescapital (Linandria)
  • marbrandfief (Haense)
  • orccapital (San’raakh)

The following locations were found to be active on over 50% of our checks between July 11th and July 17th.

  • veris (Veris, previous 75%+)
  • island_highelf1 (Norland, previously 75%+)

The following locations were found to be active on over 25% of our checks between July 11th and July 17th.

  • ponce (Ponce, previously below 25%)
  • warhawkeland (Leyu’celia, previously below 25%)

The following locations were found to be active on at least one of our checks between July 10th and July 17th.

  • mcdruids (The Wandering Grove, previously 25%+)
  • suticacapital (Sutica, previously 50%+)
  • azmarvalley (Tal’Azmar)
  • mardoncapital2 (Auguston)
  • guilddragur (The Library of Dragur, no activity last week)
  • calethia (Calethia, no activity last week)
  • dwarfsettlement1 (Tal’Ardoth)
  • arcadia (Arcadia)
  • houzi (Hou-zi Settlement(?), no activity last week)
  • silversteed (Silversteed(?), no activity last week)
  • asterleigh_rock (Santegia)
  • dwarfcave (???, no activity last week)
  • enchantryguild (The Enchantry, no activity last week)
  • helvescapital (Haelun'or, no activity last week)
  • solnik (Solnik(?), no activity last week)
  • welfsettlement2 (Metz)
  • adherents (Clerics(?), no activity last week)
  • courlandbarony (???, no activity last week)

On average, approximately 60% of players were found in regions with 5 or more players in them (the remaining percentage including spawn, staff members in the build world, etc.). This is consistent with last week.

On average, approximately 65% of players were found in regions with 5 or more players in them when 100 or more players were online. This is an increase of 2% from last week.

On average, approximately 75% of players online were in Tahn. This is an increase of 7% from last week.

On average, approximately 5% of players online were in Ceru. This is a decrease of 1% from last week.

On average, approximately 12% of players online were in Asul. This is a decrease of 4% from last week.

Some Subjective Analyses

Just like last week, I wanted to include a little section for some things I noticed, even if they aren’t strictly data-driven observations.

The first thing to notice is that there were a great deal more regions to pop up as being “active” given our definition, even though there were 21 fewer checks than the previous report (that one was done over a longer time). However, I don’t actually think that is particularly indicative of roleplay “spreading out” as one might initially believe. For one, a few groups had sizable LC projects leading to some of their more active members focusing on building instead of driving roleplay, seemingly pushing players who would normally roleplay in these areas to look elsewhere. Secondly, I have heard from a few different groups that they very intentionally have been working on increasing activity following the first post, causing them to pop up on the list a few times.

We also still seem to have horrible sleep schedules. Our activity is fairly high late into the night for Americans, but proceeds to drop then until early afternoon, or early evening for our European friends. Get more sleep folks…

As before, it seems most settlements aren’t very timezone specific, especially the most active ones. The exceptions to this rule include San’raakh and Ponce, which are definitely most active during European-friendly times. While it didn’t quite make the 25% threshold, Tal’Azmar seemed to be somewhat regularly active in American evenings/Aussie times.

Conclusions

Hopefully this second update proved valuable for everyone. If you missed the links, the previous thread is linked here, the methodology is linked here, and the data is linked here. For the foreseeable future, I think we’ll be releasing these updates every Tuesday, pending complications or player feedback.

Also, if any of you would like to do me a favor and look at the spreadsheet with the data and click the region info tab, there’s some holes/uncertainties regarding names of regions and what nations they exist beneath. If you all can help me with that, it would be greatly appreciated!

A note for nation/settlement leaders, if you're going to be running an event which you think will attract a sizable crowd, feel free to let me/others involved know. We will try to do a check at this time to record this in our data, so long as it is player-driven roleplay.

And as always, if you have further questions about my methodology, or ideas on how the staff can use this data, that would be great! Thanks for the positive feedback and expect more of these in the future.

Special thanks to @Creete, @Rammer, @Jaeden and @PorkNchopS for assisting me with checks, @Harold and @Harrison for support, and @Malimom for being everyone's friend.

Awkward, these all previously said 75%. Apologies for the confusion.

Will there be punishments for regions with almost absolutely no activity ever?

As of yet, probably not, though it might influence who gets land on the next map. If this changes, we will warn groups before it happens so they have warning beforehand.
