Naútēs (Sub-race of Human)

Special Adaptations:

Can breathe underwater, endure the pressures of the deep, can hear and speak underwater, are able to see in the dark.

Weaknesses:

Naútēs can only be outside of water for a limited period of time or else they will dehydrate, weakening their body to the point of possible death.

Origins:

Naútēs are a sub-race of humans in a similar form to halflings. Unlike halflings however there is no evidence for the Naútēs to be the result of racial crossbreeding. The origins of these beings is mostly unknown. Naútēs are descendants of Godwin through the first Naútēs arguably being Theá and her crew of Highlanders. The only  origin story is the one that comes from the stories that are sung by the Naútēs themselves. Despite living in the water the Naútēs have followed the rest of the descendants to other continents as their survival goes hand in hand with the trade and interaction with the other races. The lack of competition from other races and Naútēs’ lack of involvement in wars allowed the Naútēs to spread across the seas without much backlash.

Legend:

Naútēs believe themselves to be the descendants of the son of ōkeanós. In the creation story of the naútēs ōkeanós and his sister Terra built the world taking one hundred years to finish. When the world was done Terra married Bíos a mysterious being that came to the world once it was created. After many years the sons and daughters of Terra and Bíos conquered the land. Not being satiated conquering the earth they set their eyes on the realms of Naútēs, rich in food, and natural resources. These beings were led by Theá the first first human sailor and daughter of Godwin son of Horen. When the ships of Theá started fishing and stealing from the lands of ōkeanós the being send towards them all his wrath in form of a sea storm. Before the ships could dodge the storm the ships were already sinking deep into the sea. ōkeanós looked at the drowning sailors with disdain. But once the immortal saw  Theá he fell in love with her beauty. Without taking more time he gifted her the ability to breath water. ōkeanós declared his love to her and asked her to come live alongside him to his surprise the woman rejected him. It was not until Theá saw her fellow sailors drowning that she changed her mind. She told ōkeanós she would go with him if he spared her fellow sailors. ōkeanós looked at the men and women and instead of disdain he started to feel fascination for the beings that risked their lives by going into an unknown world. ōkeanós accepted Theá’s proposal, but as punishment her people would serve him. With this said ōkeanós granted the sailors the gift of breathing water as well. Together they built the city of Meleager and all where prosperous and happy. This happyness ended once Theá the Queen of Meleager gave birth to a son Marea taking her life in the process. ōkeanós devastated cried for 20 straight years making his realm infertile and lifeless. Marea was seeing how his father’s mystery was causing all the world to suffer. Putting his feelings aside Marea took his father's trident and stabbed him in the heart ending the life of the immortal. Life eventually came back to the realm but a lot of damage was done and the glory of ōkeanós’ realm never fully returned. In her sadness ōkeanós’ sister buried his remains deep under ground so that his remains could give life to the arid lands of the mainland.

Biology and diet:

Naútēs are humanoid like. They posses membranous hands and feet that help them swim across the sea and gills inside their nostrils that allow them to breath under water. Despite being able to breath outside of water the Naútēs  avoid the land, as their skin is not used to the sun and can get badly burned. They also possess extremely god underwater sight which is a disadvantage for them once they come out of the water as their vision becomes blurred. Most of the body of Naútēs is completely hairless and covered with a thin layer of gelatinous tissue that allows them to glide through water with more aese. They posses serrated teeth to be able to eat the raw meat of sea creatures; Seals, whales, sea birds, etc. Because the Naútēs are not in direct contact with the hostile environment of the  mainland and its diseases they tend to live fairly longer than humans, the oldest reported Naútēs being 170 years old. Because of their lack of history with disease they often die once they are infected by ground diseases, this is called by the Naútēs as land sickness. Because they still possess a lot of human characteristics the Naútēs are susceptible to changes in temperature. To avoid being affected by the changing temperatures of the sea the Naútēs tend to eat warm blooded animals. When it comes to reproduction the traits of the Naútēs are mostly recessive. This means that if a Naútēs breeds with another race the offspring will not only be seen as an abomination and an insult to ōkeanós’ legacy, but it will most likely take the traits of the race that is not a ōkeanós. The offspring of an elf an a ōkeanós would just look like a half elf- half human.

Government:

The Naútēs are semi-nomadic governed by a monarch. In theory said monarch would be blood linked to ōkeanós. Monarchs are expected to be able to move around the realm without any difficulty, for this reason once a monarch becomes too old to move as freely as he/she used to, the monarch is replaced by the offspring of the monarch’s choosing. For this reason most monarchs rule until the age of 30. Monarch are counseled by the Elders which are the oldest Naútēsranging from the ages of 80 to 100. The monarch is only allowed to marry one individual, but the siblings of the monarch can marry as many husbands/wives as they desire. This allows the blood of ōkeanós to spread to the whole race.

Meleager:

Despite all Naútēs  knowing about the legendary city of Meleager no living Naútē has ever seen it or set foot in it. The fact that it is the only time in their past history that the Naútēs have had a city makes many of them wonder why the city became lost, and why no one knows where it is. It is believed by some that when ōkeanós died that the city crumbled. Some others believe that the city went into another world where all the Naútēs will be able to go once they die. All this speculation is mainly do to the fact that the Naútēs are incapable of proper writing, the closest thing they have to it is markings on stone. Because they don't possess an alphabet the Naútēs pass their history storytelling, songs, and dances.

Culture:

Despite their semi-nomadic lifestyle the Naútēs  have quite a rich culture. Naútēs enjoy fine works of jewelry and other bright objects that glimmer in the water. They are also excellent water dancers and spend most of their free time dancing and playing music. Many young Naútēs like to spend their time in hunts to prove their dexterity with the trident.  Naútēs have never been able to domesticate any animal and even if they knew how to they are a people that believe in the freedom of all things no matter the degree of their sentience. When it comes to their religion the Naútēs do not really have one. To them all races are the sons and daughters of either ōkeanós or Terra, the two closest things they have to gods. Nonetheless since both of them are dead in their mythology the Naútēs do not have anyone to pray to. Their religion is mostly based on the survival of ōkeanós and his realm through his descendants. Because they are not able of proper smithing underwater the Naútēs tend to trade with coastal villages, trading pearls, fish, and other sea materials for metal weapons, armor, and jewelry. In times of harshness when there is no trade the Naútēs are capable of organizing raids to be able to gather necessary materials for their peoples survival.

Martial aspects:

Naútēs are not aggressive by nature, but they are territorial. They know that violence only breeds more violence. This does not mean their pacifists however. The Naútēs  will fight if provoked or if they have no other choice for the survival of their kin. All boys and girls starting from the age of 5 are taught to fight with pole arms like the spear and trident. These weapons are the only ones used by the Naútēs for both warfare and for hunting. When fighting other races the Naútēs tend to try to use their tridents to injure their victim before dragging them underwater and awaiting for them to drown.

Clothing:

As their Highlander brothers the Naútēs are very practical with a lot of what they do. Because of this the Naútēs tend to choose to wear leather clothing as it allows for more speed in comparison to other types of clothes. None the less the Naútēs  prefer to avoid overdressing as it could harm their ability to swim. The only times the Naútēs wear clothing such as robes are during important festivals or ceremonies.

Coasts, rifts, underwater caves. I did it before, not to the liking of all rpers, but that is why we have different races and sub-races.

You mention that the Naútēs are “... a sub-race of humans in a similar form to halflings”, except halflings aren’t a sub-race of humans anymore, and are their own race. So I recommend you fix this comparison in order to avoid confusion

I have to agree with the fact that this appears to be much of a creature than a human subrace to me. However I feel that this is well written and has some great thought put into it. I would recommend perhaps resubmitting this for a creature submission. If I were to look at this as a creature my main concern is that I worry like other creatures we have is that it will not gain the socialization one needs for RP. Creatures that have trouble socializing often do not get rp'd and we run into the issue of having too many inactive creatures that people wish to eliminate. Perhaps tweaking this a bit so that they are more easily socialized without the strict interference of water can help this. As for a human subrace I feel that you have written this well and put a lot of thought into it. However I am not sure if some of the adaptations such as breathing underwater is a fair adaptation for a subrace of humans.
