Mirtok 2848 Popular Post Share Posted June 15, 2020 Siege Cannon OriginIn ages long since passed, there existed a fiery weapon that thundered across the battlefields of old. Capable of being wielded on land, sea, or air, the mighty and formidable cannon had been a staple of warfare. It’s creation was a fiercely guarded secret which had contributed to the eventual loss of the knowledge entirely. As time ticked ever forward, nations came and went, lands were lost and new worlds were settled. Along the way, the modern world had lost what was once known, in pursuit of more pressing matters. Though now, it appears attempts at cracking the code have been made to restore a relic of the past. DescriptionA cannon is a large projectile type weapon capable of being mounted on wheels for land battles or stationary when outfitted on a ship. The cannon barrel itself is usually made from brass or carefully forged cast iron. The walls of the barrel have a thickness wide enough to withstand the scorching heat and immense pressure generated when launching a projectile. Projectiles come in many different forms, the most common being a solid ball of cast iron. Across all types of ammo is the need for it to act as a solid type plug in the chamber when packed against a propellent. The propellant used in a cannon is one that when lit or subjected to rapid pressure, produces an explosive combustion, expelling the projectile along the path of least resistance. Cannon BarrelsThe barrel of a cannon is usually made from cast iron in much the same fashion as a civilian bell maker would craft a large church bell. The iron is formed into a long tube, with significantly thick walls to counter the explosive power of the propellent. The interior of the tube is smoothed to prevent catching by the ammunition or the propellant. The bottom of the chamber is formed to be thicker than the opening of the barrel in order to prevent the whole barrel from exploding immediately by allowing the thicker end to absorb the bulk of the heat and pressure. Due to the unpredictable nature of casting such a large object with iron, this material is prone to producing air pockets as the barrel cools in its cast. These air pockets present a danger to the users by creating the possibility of an unintended explosion of the barrel itself due from the weaknesses in the walls. The cast iron barrels also have a heat threshold that limits the amount of shots fired before a cooling period is required or the integrity of the barrel is compromised. Barrels may also be forged using large amounts of brass forged into a similar shape, with increased thickness. Using this material lowers the risk of air pockets forming in the barrel walls but is still susceptible to high heat generation- requiring a cooldown period. ProjectilesCannons are capable of firing a myriad of different missiles so long as they all meet the same requirement of acting as a plug in the barrel when rammed against a propellant. Standard cannon shots may be as follows (Will add more as they are invented): Stone Shot: A solid piece of stone that has been shaped into a ball that is the proper gauge for the cannon. This material is very cheap to produce but has a much lower impact damage than an Iron Shot projectile. Stone Shots make up the general ammunition for a cannon on the battlefield. Iron Shot: A solid piece of cast iron formed into a ball and smoothed to the proper gauge for the cannon. This material is more expensive to produce but has superior impact damage than a Stone shot projectile. Iron Shots are normally reserved for specific or hardened target. PropellantsIn the modern era, cannon propellants come in the form of varying Blackpowder recipes. The basics of the propellant is a milled substance that when lit or crushed, produces gases in an ultra rapid fashion. When the propellant is confined to a tight space, limiting the volume in which the produced gases can expand into, intense pressure is generated. By intentionally providing a path of least resistance, the resulting pressure can be directed. Placing an object in between the pressure and this path would cause the object to be ejected with the gases. The major characteristics of the most common propellant is as follows: Blackpowder: A finely milled, granial substance created by combining the solid forms of three different materials; Niter, Charcoal, and Sulfur. Niter is the main ingredient acting as the primary source of stored gases and oxidation. Charcoal is the primary source of combustion, providing the fuel for the reaction, increasing its energy intensity as the Niter expends its chemical energy reserves. And finally, Sulfur behaves as the stabilizing element for the other two ingredients, amplifying the speed of combustion and aiding in gas production in a short time. Despite its name, the color of the final mixture is a dark grey with little black flecks all throughout. The powder is usually packed into fine mesh pouches and shaped into a flat puck or disc. Blackpowder is the most common type of propellant but is only effective in large quantities. Due to the chemical nature of the ingredients, simply scaling down the amount of each ingredient but keeping the ratios the same would not produce a significant source of gaseous pressure. Attempting to apply the propellant to a significantly smaller barrel and using a smaller projectile simply would not produce enough energy. Misc. Characteristics Cannons when fully assembled are very heavy and require a primary mover in order to reposition. This can usually be accomplished with a horse or through the laborious effort of at least 4 trained soldiers. Cannons made from cast iron are usually black but can be plated with other types of material purely for cosmetics reasons. Brass barrels are the usual reflective copper gold color characteristic of brass. With each shot, cannons produce an explosive boom that can be heard at great distances. For those who stand in close proximity to the controlled explosion, without proper hearing protection, can expect to be temporarily deafened. Sustained exposure to cannons firing may result in permanent hearing loss. Typical Blackpowder cannons produce a decent amount of grey smoke as a result of the combustion within the barrel. Continued, sustained, and numerous cannon shots can quickly produce a vision obscuring smoke across the battlefield. The smoke has an interesting odor of its own, slightly reminiscent of volatite but in a much less offensive degree. From the mouth of each cannon, following the ejection of a projectile, is a short burst of flames that would produce significant heat in a short area around the muzzle. Siege Mechanics 4 man operating crew 5 emote operation 1 Emote to load the propellent cartridge 1 Emote to transport the missile to the barrel 1 Emote to load the missile into the barrel 1 Emote to pack the missile and cartridge for firing 1 Emote to fire the cannon An additional emote would be required to change targets or reposition the cannon. Roll scheme TBD by mods Maximum shot count TBD by mods Fail chance TBD by mods Capabilities Cannons are favored as a premier siege weapon due to their highly destructive and powerful nature. Possessing the capability of being mounted on a set of wheels and towed by a horse onto the battlefield or given a stationary mount on the deck of a ship. Cannons fire in a single arching path that can be minorly adjusted as needed to achieve a desired trajectory. Their primary purpose is to cause immense damage to entrenched positions or fortified locations. They perform particularly well against hollow targets or thinner barriers- such as a gate. At sea, they simply tear holes in the opposition's vessel from a distance. Redlines 4 man operating crew Minimum 5 emotes to fire Cannot be made small or light enough to be hand carried as detailed by the lore above Must invent Blackpowder IRP in order to self produce. May purchase recipe or reverse engineer from others. Maximum shot count, continued use will result in roll penalties- refer to lore above Critical fail roll destroys the weapon Purpose (OOC) This is an expanded cannon lore idea to return the technology for use in siege warfare or naval battles. As far as normal PvP mechanics go, cannons shouldn't cause a drastic change. They are instead a thematic or atmospheric change. Bringing an interesting flavor back into warfare. Since the current war rules are still being heavily worked on by the Mod team, should this lore be accepted I intend to leave the specifics of the mechanics to them.Citation Spoiler The following is a WIP for developing Blackpowder through a series of events and scientific RP. These are previous submissions by TaiwanNotChina. They pretty much had the same idea but posted them first. Their gunpowder lore better integrates with alchemy since it employs the symbols/regents.
ScreamingDingo 16990 Share Posted June 15, 2020 volatite wouldn’t have enough energy to be viable for cannons as an fyi

Legoboy7984 2441 Share Posted June 15, 2020 (edited) Nah, I prefer just rune cannons because then they are rare as you gotta have a rune smith (dwarf) to produce the item. Side Note: Now, I do know that I am an Orenian but I have my own opinions. Edited June 15, 2020 by Legoboy7984
