The New World and You: A Teaser

I would like to add my opinion to this giant tangle or arguments and debating...

From what I have seen here the more conservative people who wish to keep their stuff seem to be mostly focused on the minas of their character. Money... money money money... money money money money. Seriously. Money.

To me it sounds like an event which happened in Australia not too long ago... There was a new tax to be imposed on the mining companies who were making super profits. The tax was only to be put on those making over a certain amount of millions of dollars. There was a MASSIVE stir which basically lead to the prime minister of Australia getting backstabbed by his second in command who assumed the seat of prime ministership.

Now this may look at first glance unrelated to the topic, but LOOK AGAIN! I IMPLORE! Money is the key here. The mining companies rose a stir because they would loose money, the people here are causing a stir (well, probably not that far. I would say are arguing against as that would be more accurate) because they are going to lose their money.

It is true that you will lose your minas (if this were to become a reality which it is looking extremely likely to happen) but look at what you do every day on the server. Do you sit at you EXPENSIVE house in you full EXPENSIVE diamond armour in a chair constantly spamming /money and smiling because of the large quantity? Or do you go around, killing monsters and having fun with friends?

What is this server? A money making server that revolves around the economy? Nope. I know one: It's called "Buxville". Money. That is the goal of that server, and people have MILLIONS on it. It can be fun yes, but money can give you a headache when staring at it for too long... (That is more of a bad metaphor than a fact).

What do you DO with your money on this server? Buy a myriad of stacks of bread? Fund building projects maybe? Buy excessive amounts of diamond armour? How many of these can you do without money? None. Maybe the building project... (that's against the point) But how many of these things can you do with under 20 000 minas? How about 10 000? Less?

Those with the knowledge of making money make money and do whatever they want. But what do you DO with hundreds of thousands of minas? I do not comprehend. I once asked my mother when I was much younger what people will billions of dollars do with that money. She responded easily and simply: "Do whatever the hell they want." It's a much easier life with hundreds of thousands of dollars/money. But isn't it a LOT more exciting living on the edge? Fighting for your every meal or relying upon a group of friends for support? Maybe not in the real world, but we come here to ESCAPE the real world, not to represent it in a fantasy setting.

I hope people found the effort to read all of that, I guarantee you; there will be many-an-argument against.

*edit* It's amazing, I type 500 words in here in less then 10 minutes but when it comes to my assignments it takes over three hours to write just as much...

It's not the money that is the argument. Well partially. But as Gropier said, it's the time and effort. Syrio told me about all the countless all-nighters he spent to become the richest person on the server.

And now what? He just loses it?

Effort? Indeed. Quite a lot in fact. What happened during that entire time he was gathering the money? Was it SOULY to become the richest player on the server? If so he is playing it wrong. That's not RP, that's just grinding for money. But I do not believe this to be the case! During this time I bet he made MANY MANY such character advancements, had a lot of fun playing with friends and participated in many events.

But that was not my point. My key point was: Money does not matter.

What else but sit there and GLOAT that you have a lot of money are you going to do with it?

There was someone I heard that spent 450k on a plot of land. I was... amazed at the most part. But unless you are going to USE it, what is the POINT. What ROLEPLAY purpose do you have of having INSANE amounts of money?

(Of course this person used it which made his money have a use:P)\

In the long run, I support at least a partial reset.

People have FUN playing a game and working up to their goals.

To all the people saying it's like playing pokemon and then loosing 3 hours of work because it crashed: NO. It is not. Do EXACTLY THE SAME THINGS happen again to achieve the same things? NO! Every time you rp you get a DIFFERENT experience, different things happen. That is what seperates a true RP game from a game like pokemon or another with a set storyline. Its what gives its replay value. Something that you can play again even with nothing because it is FUN. Every single time, different things happen. That's the whole point isn't it? Or did I miss something? Is this game suddenly based on material value? Who has the largest one so to speak?

Wow,

18 pages in and not one person has given a convincing reason as to why you would take any character's minas when we change map, just vague notions of 'balancing' which I believe to be a misnomer. Accusations of 'sounding lazy' are all very well but honestly when you are addressing those who worked hard for their minas, while some others have spent a lot of their time spamming OOC with 'witticisms' like 'herp derp', you really should review who you think is 'lazy' and who is not.

I notice with disappointment that despite some GMs' input recently to the debate, they offered little by way of explanation of why taking minas off any character on the server would benefit anyone else. Honestly, at this point just answer the questions raised by me and others and I'd really appreciate your input. I understand some info cannot be given at this stage, but if this is a discussion, you've got to give us a bit more to work with in order to justify what for me would be a drastic change to my LoTC experience !

I don't know why this discussion is here at all if it is a fait accompli as I'm starting to fear this is.

Lucas / Zolgash, have you read much of Tolkien's work? The lore is full of characters that go out to seek riches in Middle Earth (indeed 'The Hobbit' is based on this whole concept and is a fantastic tale to boot) so if you think Bilbo Baggins is less 'in the spirit' of a Tolkien based world than, let's say, Gandalf, then fair enough, I understand your view.

Another poster, Gordok, has already eloquently expressed the core objection some of us having to losing our minas, and it's not really to do with the money.

"To place subjective judgement on any of these character values and weigh one above the other is like telling a player that just because he likes to accumulate property, items, minas or whatever his character concept is less important and less valuable to the server that another character concept who may be more altruistic and enjoys traveling around recounting stories and giving sagely advice. This is wrong and will only end up hurting the server."

Honestly, do you really think wealthier players are just sitting around in big houses? You don't become wealthy by sitting around, I can assure you.

Just make some convincing points of why the server would genuinely benefit from wiping player's minas and this debate can move forward. The arguments I have seen in opposition to my view and similar views appear to be mainly criticism and nitpicking (accusations of laziness, poor RP, being pedantic in trying to 'correct' an excellent analogy provided by another poster, etc.)

Now bring your constructive reasons as to why you want minas wiped, and let a fair debate begin.

As for me, I dislike arguing (hehe , honestly!) and I think I have expressed all my thoughts to the point of exhaustion, so I'll bow out of this debate, and trust that our views will actually make a difference in the end.

Thanks, as ever, for reading. I'm as tired of reading my writing as you all probably are !

No I don't go running around killing monsters and having fun because if I die I lose ~10k, and whenever I join, and every so often I do type /money just to see my money that I have earned, because I know that could be the last time that I look at it.

I would actually like a GM, not Petyr who obviously cannot come up with an adequate reply to anything, to respond to what Moglets and others who share partially the same ideal of keeping our minas.

And to others who are saying that people who are soley out there to gain money are not playing the RP right is complete bs. I determined my character would be a businessman and purposely get money, that was what he did and achieved.

How about this for your lore, my new character is going to be my cousin, and he inherits my "fortune" as I have no direct family. There, problem solved.

Hello Community.

I'm a big mean GM who spends his nights working to make your server better, and I've decided I want to really ruin your day.

So guess what I'm going to do? I'm going to create an amazing and awesome lore expansion and create an entire new hand-made world for you guys!

I know this will really ruin all your days, and I hope it does; I love making my players feel miserable by making updates for them.

tl;dr Shut up you pompous shits. You insult my GM's actions one more time and see what happens.

"Shut up you pompous shits. Insult my GM team one more time and see what happens. "

Vax, really?

One poster makes an admittedly offside comment " not Petyr who obviously cannot come up with an adequate reply to anything" and you accuse muliple people of being pompous shits ?

It's just debate dude, and it seems like anyone who opposes what is clearly becoming the GM / staff consensus view is getting called names.

This is nothing to do with your hard work, it is always appreciated. Don't be personal and insulting. I'm one 'pompous ****' who donated 100 dollars to support the server.

Don't insult me. I have been civil throughout.

Perhaps you didn't read, Allow me to put it simple for the small-minded. DO NOT INSULT VAQ'S GMS. If you do, He put Ban-ban on you-you and make you go Boo-hoo.

I don't understand why players think it's ok to criticize the choices the development team makes to such a ridicilious level. We have created an amazing RP experience so far and it's only been improving. Why not trust the development team and allow them to continue development or discuss things in a civil and educated manner. Furthermore, you are very fortunate to have the ability to discuss issues with the GM team and the development and have a say in the development of this incredible world. It's unacceptable that you speak to these hard working people who are creating an experience free of charge and are spending hours working and developing this world in such a disrespectful manner. Playing here is a PRIVELAGE not a RIGHT and it can be revoked at any time.

Ok so 19 pages is a bit much for me to go through. I gather that items and minas will be lost but what about skills? Will we keep skills in the new world?
