Whimsical Wilds | Forestry Pack

Amongst a world of the estranged and majestic, it's only natural that oddities arise that strike awe into a beholder. Secrets are always woven into the landscape, oddities of flora and fauna alike managing to masquerade amongst the mundane calling out to be uncovered. Curiosity is not a trait to go unrewarded in this world, as something magnificent is always awaiting those who decide to brave the unknown.

The expansive woodlands that fill the world are home to much more than what may meet the eye, a handful of trees breaking the mold to adapt to circumstances that might seen unfathomably niche. Every tree detailed here was once one of these trees whose worth went uncovered, but were brought into the light of civilization slowly upon the discovery of their value. While some may still find themselves ignorant to their existence, they've found themselves nurtured by communities who live off the land, ensuring their worth is well-appreciated.

All trees mentioned within the lore piece may be considered uncommon knowledge. It is within reason that any character may be aware of their existence and their benefits without having to learn about them from another, whether it be part of their backstory, discovering information on them from areas that would utilize them, or simply finding books on them in a library.

Referenced Systems

This spoiler contains a quick overview of the Climate and Build Guide sections utilized in this post.

Build Guides

Build guides will appear at the bottom of each tree's lore. These are NOT some sort of strict ruling on how each tree should be built, but rather just a reference to make it easier for builders to understand the gist of them. Personal interpretations and usage of one's own palette should be done as seen fit, have fun with the builds!

Spoiler

[Seven Seasons Sundialious] The Sundialious tree is aptly nicknamed ‘Seven Seasons’ after its unique trait of hosting seven unique foliage colors, one for each different month. Once thought to be a multitude of Sundialious species, upon proper research, it was revealed that it was a singular species that boasted grandeur adaptability, becoming an uncommon sight within less traveled wilds. While a seed and for a duration as a sapling, this tree is entirely gray, from root to leaves, but following [1 IRL Week] of being planted, it will start to adapt to its environment. Upon blooming for the first time, it will uptake a color native to the month of the year it bloomed within, with its trunk, branches, and roots starting to mimic the traits of other dominant flora of a region. These vibrant adaptations yield a plethora of beautiful, albeit strange, combinations of Sundialious trees to populate the realm.

[Shimmerfruit] One of the more iconic sights of Sundialious trees are their estranged fruits, known as Shimmerfruit for their luminous properties. These fruits are shaped like water balloons, hang from short, rather accessible vines, and have a chewy texture with a taste that borders between sweet and sour. A minor bioluminescence offers a trademark glow, although only bright enough to make the fruit stand out at night. When a fruit is picked from its vine, the glow will fade slowly over the course of [1 IRP Hour] after being picked, a new fruit developing from the empty vine over the course of the following months.

[Environmental Mimicry] This tree will adopt the traits of a singular tree native to the region upon blooming, conforming its wood and bark’s traits into the shape and style of a Sundialious’ trunk and roots while keeping the aesthetic of the adopted tree's bark. The foliage is unaffected by this trait, however, always remaining one of the Sundialious’ vibrant seasonal colorations.

[Season’s Blessing] This tree will adopt a core color, which affects its leaves, flowers, & sap, upon blooming for the first time. Each month of the year has a different color attributed to it. Seemingly at whim, the tree may rarely shift its color upon the start of a new month.

Wednesday/Snow’s Maiden - Purple

Thursday/Malin’s Welcome - Pink
Friday/The First Seed - Light Blue
Saturday/The Grand Harvest - Yellow
Sunday/The Sun’s Smile - Orange
Monday/The Amber Cold - Red
Tuesday/The Deep Cold - White

Biomes: All, excluding Polar (See Environmental Mimicry)

Environmental Mimicry is incapable of replicating any traits aside from basic wood qualities, being incapable of replicating magical, or otherwise complex traits (Mimicry is limited to common trees).

- The tree will revert to an unadapted state if ungrown by a Druid.

If used as a Soul Tree, the type of wood the tree mimics with Environmental Mimicry is permanently chosen upon CA approval, retaining its properties through ungrowth, seeding, and sapling creation. If used as a Fae Plant (Epiphyte), such restrictions do not apply, and the Epiphyte is allowed to change their aesthetic every time they change their plant’s location.

~ For both CA’s, the color of the foliage may be changed in line with Season’s Blessing, but there is a

[1 OOC Month] cooldown on changing its color. The physical build must be changed to reflect the new

color, as should the character's physical traits. Unless altered by external means, a character's appearance may

not be a color not represented in the physical build.

- The colors of Season’s Blessing are selected off in-game building palette viability. Please see the Build Guide for references of some of these recommended palettes if needed!
Dyes and Candles are recommended for IRP representations of Shimmerfruit.

Spoiler

[Silkleaf Tyrantus] A stout pink tree renowned for its natural affinity for threadcraft, this willow-like tree is a weaver's delight. This tree rarely exceeds heights of [7 Meters/Blocks] tall; its trunks and branches are often twisted and low-lying, offering ease of access to the variety of resources it provides. These trees prefer warmer climates, doing well in places with a fair amount of humidity. The tree is often discovered in patches or clearings, standing alone amidst a field of flora, all of which ends up being uniquely affected by the secretions of the tree’s roots. The secretions in question are a powerful pink pigment that, whilst not affecting the majority of flora, will obnoxiously affect any petals, petal-like structures, or seeds of flora within [5 Meters/Blocks] of the tree. This causes exclusively pink-themed flora to surround it, staining flowers, fruits, vegetables, and seeds alike in its bubble-gum pink hue. For the brave artisans who can withstand the catastrophic sight of solely pink flora enough to bother harvesting from the tree, it offers a generous bounty of natural sewing supplies.

[Weaving Leaves] The leaves on the tree are covered in hair and fuzz, often causing them to clump together and give the tree’s foliage the appearance of cotton balls. Despite their estranged appearance, these leaves can be harvested to create abnormally high-quality silk by processing the leaves the same way one would refine wool. During the refinement process, the pink appearance of the silk fades away, leaving a perfectly clean white thread for the artisan to work with.

[Threading Twigs] The tree, while having an overall similar composition to mahogany wood, holds an abnormality within the branches. The tips of all branches are fine and pointy, no different from a sewing needle, while bolstering an abnormal sturdiness akin to bone. By snapping the branch tips behind their dense points, one may obtain these natural sewing needles, with the softer ends allowing for easy whittling as well as the boring of a small threading hole, to create a quick, easy, aesthetic, and effective sewing needle kit in just a dozen minutes or so.

[Pink Tyrant’s Grasp] The obnoxious flora-afflicting dye of the tree cannot be harvested to any great extent from the tree; any attempts to do so render its secretions ruined and its effects mundane. The only exception to this is if one makes physical contact with a root, in which case their skin will be stained bubblegum pink for up to [1 OOC Day]. The tree can, however, have a garden grown around it, all of whose flowers, seeds, fruits, vegetables, and even grains will be bubblegum pink, albeit with no effect on taste or fertility. Anything grown from these pink-dyed byproducts will be their normal counterparts, only becoming pink once more if grown within the tree’s affliction radius.

Biomes: Dry & Temperate

- If used as a Fae Plant (Epiphyte) or Soul Tree, the host’s body cannot tap into the dye secretion, being limited to the actual tree alone. You cannot make people pink by slapping them, sorry.

Truespring Geyserian

https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/6685099439250325/

Spoiler

[Truespring Geyserian] Tall and thin, and often acting as a host to a jagged trunk, the Truespring Geyserian is a tree that exclusively finds itself alongside the edges of freshwater bodies. Aside from the aesthetic purplish-blue trunk, which is accompanied by sparse puffs of sapphire-blue leaves, these semi-aquatic trees are actually incredibly valuable to the ecosystems they inhabit beyond their beautiful appearance. They gain a large amount of their nutrients from filtering water, granting their bark a somewhat petrified state, feeling more akin to crushed and compacted seashells than actual wood. These trees are especially valued by groups of Mali’ame and Highlanders whose cultures rely on non-coastal fishing.

[Cleansing Cycle] Water cycled through the roots of this tree is naturally filtered of mundane impurities and debris, giving cleaner, clearer, healthier waters that provide an ideal habitat for aquatic life. Filtration removes both natural and unnatural impurities that would otherwise inhibit aquatic life, including diseases, pollution, algae blooms, and toxic minerals that may leach into a body of water. This debris accumulates within the lower end of the truck, being spat out bit by bit after clumping together, slowly returning a gravel-like substrate to the floor of whatever body of water the tree is growing upon.

[Font of Life] The water that flows through this tree hosts superb oxygenation as well as being enhanced with nutrients that are exceedingly beneficial for fish of all sorts. While not notable in lesser quantities, lakes and ponds with a large amount of Truespring Geyserians often find themselves teeming with fish up to double their average size, sometimes giving way to goliath fish far beyond a species’ limitations.

Biomes: Continental & Temperate

- The gigantification of fish causes them to be 1.5x to 2x larger on average, being 3x at most. Not all fish will experience this effect; only about half of a water body’s population will be affected, with only a tenth of the population being able to reach the effect’s full potential.

- Under no circumstance should this tree be treated as fire resistant or particularly durable, they are similar to a [Mangrove Tree] in overall constitution.

- If forcefully grown nonadjacent to water, the tree will become weak and unhealthy, its bark blackening and becoming incapable of growing leaves.

- One tree is ample for keeping ponds clean, with a small patch being able to maintain most small lakes. Larger bodies of water will require a larger quantity of trees to keep filtered in their entirety, typically needing a couple patches to maintain them.

- If infused with [Cleansing] from [Blight Healing] then a Truespring Geyserian may slowly filter away magical impurities in addition to mundane ones.

- A blighted Truespring Geyserian will continue to filter water while blighted, actively spreading its respective blight source throughout the water body its rooted upon and contaminating it.
- This tree may used as a Fae Plant (Epiphyte) or Soul Tree.

Bridgeroot

Spoiler

[Bridgeroot] A cliff-dwelling tree with a bulky, warped trunk and a penchant for growing as sideways as possible, the Bridge Root is a clunky and durable tree famous for its usage as a natural bridge. The tree starts thin and scraggly, sprouting upwards like bamboo for the week or so from when it sprouts, growing to roughly [4-5 Meters/Blocks] tall. This abnormal growth sprout quickly ceases, however, as it starts to instead start growing thicker at a rapid rate. This growth is so detrimental to the tree that its roots cannot support the weight at first, causing the tree to warp under its own weight. Over the following year, the tree will slowly bend until it is nearly horizontal with the ground. From this point on, the tree will strengthen its roots for the following few months and then begin growing at a rate roughly double that of a normal tree for the remainder of its life. This unique style of growth is not without purpose, however, as it serves a specific niche. Adapted to become sensitive to wind, this tree is particularly developed for growing into cliffs and ravines and will read the winds before adapting its growth patterns to its particular environment. This tree is particularly favored by druids, who can warp the tree to become a variety of convenient structures without discomforting nature.

[Natural Architect] Should a Bridgeroot determine that it is on a cliff that has another cliffside within [25 Meters/Blocks], it will adapt its growth habits to stretch out to the cliffside. Over the following years, it will slowly grow towards the cliffside, supporting its own weight with an abnormally dense and sturdy root and trunk. Upon reaching the cliff face, the tree will begin to grow its topside into another set of roots, piercing into the opposing cliff and anchoring itself from both sides, entering an [Anchored] state. The Bridgeroot will continue to grow, reaching proportions large enough for even a carriage to comfortably cross, given that the tree is both wide and flat enough to support one. If the Bridgeroot determines that no opposing cliff is nearby, then it will limit its growth so it does not collapse its cliff under its expansive weight. A bridgeroot that does not become [Anchored] is known as being [Stunted].

Biomes: All, excluding Polar

- A properly bridged Bridgeroot tree is similar in constitution to a boulder, being easier to remove with a pickaxe than a logging axe. Despite this, it hosts no resistance to fire and, in fact, burns quite well due to serving as a denser fuel source. A [Stunted] Bridgeroot that has not been anchored to an opposing cliff will be similar to an [Oak Tree] instead, never reaching its full potential.

~ If grown somewhere that isn’t a cliffside, it will still bend and warp under its own weight, albeit growing similar

to a normal tree. The result of this is roughly what a bonsai tree would look like if it was the size of an [Oak Tree].
- If used as a Fae Plant (Epiphtye) or Soul Tree, the Bridgeroot will be restricted from becoming [Anchored]. They must be the [Stunted] variant, and they may never grow beyond the size of an [Oak Tree]

Spoiler

[Kaleidoscarpus] A whimsical tree whose very foliage is a deception to the eyes and a byproduct of its unique nature, the Kaleidoscarpus is a rare and phantasmal existence. This tree’s form is rather abnormal in design, appearing to viewers as a mangled, veiny trunk with hazy and blurred leaves. The trunk, in reality, is a colossal cluster of thinner vine-like growths, heavily intertwined and holding themselves together through their own constriction. The leaves, which coat the top of the tree like a dome, are translucent and lightweight, composed of a gelatin-esque membrane that absorbs humidity and sunlight with abnormally high efficiency. These leaves have the unique property of producing a fog-like gas to inflate them, giving them a bubble-like appearance. This fog is passively produced without cessation, causing full leaves to have gas leaks and being unable to contain their own production. This gas will bleed out from the leaves at a slow rate, creating a dense and hazy perception of the foliage for any viewers, refracting light, and giving off the appearance of a dream-like, rainbow haze to the Kaleidoscarpus. This fog will dissipate when leaving the vicinity of the tree, limiting its presence to the tree itself.

[Dreamer’s Delight] The trademark rainbow fog of the Kaleidoscarpus, known as Dreamer’s Delight, hosts a useful niche in both medical and recreational use. Available in the forms of gelatinous leaves and vials of fog, this substance may be either consumed or inhaled, depending on the form used. Once used, the user will begin to experience a calming sensation washing over them for an hour or so before fizzing away, additionally reducing any inflammation or swelling within the body for up to half a day. These effects will take place [1 Emote] after consumption or [2 Emotes] after inhalation.

If two or more measures are consumed, then the substance will produce the aforementioned results, although the side-effects will become amplified. Minor visual and auditory hallucinations will take hold over the holder, their mind frequently wandering or losing track of thought processes, a gentler aura being inflicted upon even the grumpiest or most aloof of individuals. These side-effects will always fade away after sleeping, however, and are not addictive in any quantity, although their safe nature and pleasant side-effects can lead many to use them frequently for recreational purposes.

Biomes: Temperate & Tropical

- The side effects of Dreamer’s Delight will never influence one’s personality beyond how they might act when drunk. The extent/effectiveness of it is up to the player who consumed it.
- The fog produced by the tree may not offer any form of combative advantage in any scenario.

- May not be used as a Fae Plant (Epiphyte) or Soul Tree

Purpose

Spoiler

The objective of this is to provide some extra, lore-justified building aesthetics that can be applied all over the map. Fantasy builds are amongst my favorites to see within LOTC, and something I consider a great addition to the immersion within the server. Aside from an expanded building catalog, I also hope this can offer an interesting RP niche to those who do care enough to engage with it! While some features are more whimsical, like the Silkleaf's pinki-fication, I still think it could be quite interesting for somebody to try to make a pretty minas or two by selling pink fruits and vegetables! Aside from that, I’ve tried to make the trees, excluding Kaleidoscarpus, available to Epiphytes and Tree Lords so there can be some more LOTC-exclusive trees to get behind. On a lesser note, if one takes a look at world lore on the Accepted Lore spreadsheet, they will notice that the TREE COMMUNITY is VERY NEGLECTED in favor of herbs! I figured it was about time to help even out the numbers a bit with an Ame’lie styled collective post, albeit with my own take on fantasy oddities.

(A display of the very lonely 11 trees compared to the bountiful herbs and misc. flora. Truly criminal, I say!)
