LoTC was even more popular as an RP server when PVP was default. I'm not saying it's because of PVP being default, but it was still the #1 server when PVP was default. So it is quite logical :)

Okay like, everyone take a break and look at this. That was actually pretty good. +1

Assuming that the combat system was the only thing that made LotC popular. Many other things can be taken into account for the changes to server popularity. (Like less applications for everything short of breathing)

Look here:

PVP combat or RP combat is not what is the problem here, it's the unwillingness of players to adapt to the situation and to expect the normal and react accordingly. It comes down to the idea of 'having fun'. If someone provides roleplay that has reap-able reward for all players involved, it is honestly guaranteed to pan out well and to be successful, but when the RP is dragged out and boring, when the aim of either player is clear (i.e. to kill them) it is the problem that everyone seems to need to physically fight back. Why? think Tyrion Lannister, use wit and charm or gold and power to win over the situation, rather than being a predictable boring sod and raising arms yourself, not doing so just sets yourself up for failure and upset, not to mention the Tyrion way of handling things is usually much more enjoyable in the end and during.

Just use a little...

PVP allows this to occur, although it may not appear to, it was so common in aegis that people just used a little ingenuity to escape clicky death, and it worked brilliantly, much better than an RP bicker-fest would do.

Just get your heads out of the sand and think a little further than the bounds of your villain app biography, you can do whatever you want you know, that is the essence of roleplay.

PVP did not make the server so popular. It was mainly the whole "Undead nemesis" thing. PVP was merely our current and only way of combat at the time.

You're right. There are still many aspects of RP. However, this only concerns one. You will be removing the current combat aspect to replace it. It doesn't stop RP, it just stops combat RP.

No, it makes LotC revolve far less around combat RP. Maximum time spent doing combat will be around 20-30 seconds, so people won't be focusing their entire day around combat. That was the reason why this was developed. It wouldn't really stop it.

I don't know about you, but I would be more frustrated spending upwards of ten minutes in a rather unfulfilling RP fight and being asked to /d20 than in a 30 second PVP fight. You act as if people don't do the same thing through the guise of RP fighting.

Of course they do, I never said the contrary and I'm not "acting like it".

He said pvp didn't help item hungry players and I refuted it, never did I even talk about rp fighting since my answer was aimed to what he said, not the topic in general.

I acknowledged that, I was responding to someone who didn't.

Both systems have the same flaw then however with RP fighting there is more room to take into account variables when PvP just takes into account clicking speed and equipment.

Certainly PVP takes some external factors into the game. Keep in mind that the majority of RP fights I've entered I've won, and if I've lost, I found it just as lackluster as the win. People don't seem to care that you've trained for however long you have trained, they just want to pull a win, logical or not.

Yesterday I got in a fight that went from being dazed by being hit by a Telekinesis'ed object, being tackled, slowly managed to loosen up and stab that tackler, to open fighting again. The TK then ripped a lamp post from the ground, and threw it us, hitting the guard who tackled us. I then ran away and used a little girl as a meatshield, who then ripped out my character's throat with a bite while he wasn't looking.

Tell me how PvP will ever be that detailed or fun.

Some people like extensive fighting that has usable tactics. One of my characters use a shield. Where will he fit into your plugins? He won't, simply put. How can I really roleplay out my character grabbing someone by the neck to yank them out of a building and throw them into the dirt? I can't. How can anyone RP say kidnapping if the person they were attempted to take fought back and ended up dead? They can't.

If you're fighting a mage it's RP default.

Just going to say, on an unofficial vote, RP default received more votes than PvP.

Something else I saw was that RP fighting relies on OOC knowledge to a certain extent of combat and such. Well yes... but you should be gaining that OOC knowledge through IC training. If you don't role-play training, you can't get the knowledge...

I want to continue enjoying my role-play with Ishabellya. Although the result of her fights are almost 50% losses or retreats, at least it's 50% of success on my side. I want to continue enjoying victory role-play.

If PvP was made default, I would lose over 90% of the time. Not only is that unrealistic for my character, but it is also power-gaming because I can't do anything for my character to win.

If you dislike this supposed 'drama' that comes from RP fights, then don't pick fights with people who don't RP fight properly.

If PVP wins, everyone with poor computers sort of get thrown under the bus. Means we can't play combat characters, which is a real drag for a lot of us. I rarely get any combat roleplay anymore, but when I do, i thoroughly enjoy it. I'd hate for PVP to become the norm, as it would take away from good possible roleplay.

If the person powergames, report them and they'll get a strike or ban, VA revoke, or some other punishment. Or, you know, you can actually take the time to explain to them how they are powergaming and how they can improve.

I get around 7 fps and random screen freezes on a regular basis, I'm still voting for PVP default. While it may suck for me, at least I acknowledge that it sucks less for the server to use RPPVP instead of RP fights.

Simply ask if you can RP instead of PvP :)
