The elderly Theonus shook her head at the news of her distant cousin. "A gutte woman, she was." She told her husband in a solemn tone. "Why did it have to be this way?" "Papa, is grandmutter coming?" A little Augusten asked as she traveled on her father's horse back to their new home, but he only left her with silence.

A little girl sat in her room, clenching two papers. One, a statement of protection and the other, a statement of innocence. The girl wept and wept, hoping this would be over soon.
