  1. To me, having an 'insane' character doesn't necessarily mean that you need to run around like a murder hobo—which is unfortunately a broadly accepted trait among players when it comes to mental downsides, whether lore enforced or not. Among my characters, very few have actually killed someone simply because they were 'insane' alone; and it's not very fun for either party when you simply pull someone off the road and shank them randomly because your lore demands that you 'be paranoid'. Instead, I enjoy building off both complex and simple psychological maladies; whether that's an older character developing dementia and forgetting how to pour tea properly, or some batshit crazy hag who likes to converse with inanimate objects then be offended when they don't speak back. Little things like that can make the character so much more interesting than having dark eye bags added to their skin. I also enjoy religious and philosophical RP, which I incorporate into a lot of my characters.
  2. A humble philospher would pen a letter to the caravan, delivered by a rather plump courier who huffed tiredly. "Brother Aaliyah," "I would be thrilled to accompany you upon this excursion. I have a keen eye for the sights, and it's been some time since I've last been out on such a venture." — Dresden de Wees
  3. This Lore has been accepted. Moved to Implemented Lore, it will be sorted to it's appropriate category soon. Please note that if this is playable lore, such as a magic or CA, you will need to write a guide for this piece. You will be contacted regarding the guide (or implementation if it isn’t needed) shortly.

  6. Though I've only been around two-odd years, I have quite a lot of chat racers due to my poor habit of making personas that I tend to rush or only have interest in for some brief moment, before getting bored or abandoning them. Thankfully, I've gotten better, though I'll just list my most memorable and most relevant: Alfius Elpyne [Dead]: The first 'real' character that I played for a good part of my time on LOTC. He started as a very wholesome human fire evocationist in Belvitz, who was either liked or threatened with hanging depending upon who you were, and he aided in the legalization of magic within the Pertinaxi Empire. Post transition to Arcas, he learned Conjuration and Arcanism, and adopted a mute daughter by the name of Symphony, eventually working towards nearly becoming an Ascended, and was basically your stereotypical protagonist Void Mage. However, amidst his trials, he was maddened by touching a bloodshard and became a blood mage instead, crucial development for both me and my characters, truly concretizing my path on this server. He fell into a bad crowd and, despite his efforts to maintain a good spirit and love for his daughter, was eventually crushed as I spiraled into into my 'edgy mage grr grr' phase. The most memorable moment I had on him was probably when one of his more twisted colleagues forced him to unknowingly cannibalize his own daughter (to which she PK'd). He became depressed and lonely, until he eventually died of his own sadness and regret. The link to the PK post is here. Overall he was a very complicated character, and one that I often criticize because of how poorly I roleplayed him due to my inexperience and attachment to the character. However, even though I was a new player and reminiscing him often makes me cringe, looking back I think he had one of the more dramatic and immersive stories out of many other personas I've played. It was a shame I hadn't realized that sooner and allowed his story to rest instead of avoiding so many more unique opportunities. Dresden de Wees [Active]: Second-born son of the infamous Darius Ault. He was a lot frailer than his father and brother in his youth, and often spent more times around books and scribblings than he did the sword, much to the dismay of his family. His original plan was to learn magic, though eventually I went inactive on the character and he wasn't played for nearly a year; though I started to play him more actively again several months ago after some redevelopment. After some time taken to witness how much the Empire had changed during his absence, he came to learn the arts of alchemy under a man by the name Zadrik, and eventually aided his mentor in the creation of the fabled Philosopher's Stone as a means of transmuting the soul. There were many roleplay posts leading up to this, and his departure is by far the the most memorable out of all my LOTC experiences. You can find his shelving and farewell post here. I still play him actively, and he's had many unique adventures. He's definitely one of the more immersive characters I've played, and one I've used as a means of toying with deeper aspects of roleplay, such as in-character philosophies, faiths, and moral concepts which govern the persona vert strictly. Hopefully he'll be around for a good while, but who knows what could happen. Azigaté [Active]: Azigaté is a peculiar character among those I tend to play. She's rather mysterious in her upbringing and place of origin, though originally she was a gypsy by who came to lose her sight after some odd monster attack in Helena. She prayed to God to restore her sight, and was granted no response, so she fled to the far swamps of Arcas in despair. Azigaté mourned bitterly and learned to feed off mushrooms and other herbs she could find, leading her teeth to become yellow and her flesh darkly toned from mud. She was lucky she wasn't drowned or poisoned. No one knows what happened after, though it's rumored she made pacts with the devil in order to to restore her sight. Azigaté now lives in a tree stump in the far town of Esbec, oftentimes discarding the company of people in exchange for inanimate objects, which she has made a habit of conversing with casually. I enjoy maintaining a more cryptic character for her, one that often leaves people confused as to whether she had just prophesied or instead spewed some random nonsense. She's very low key and doesn't like to directly interact with big events or gatherings, and instead prefers subtlety and proxies, which draws her to a lot of smaller villages where she can be on the DL. Tuvya Carrion [Active]: One of my newer characters. He is the son of Ostromir Carrion, and has multiple siblings; two of which are his triplet brother and sister. He is a very questionable boy for his age, and oftentimes becomes malicious and manipulative without even realizing it. The boy also has terrible temperament management, and will melt down quite quickly when things don't go his way, though he's definitely gotten better with it over time. He's still relatively new, again, so beyond child abuse there hasn't been much else notable tied to him... yet.
  7. I can also strongly relate to this. I have certainly had my own experiences with mental health in the past few years; and even with the pandemic and all the struggling the world is going through, it's very easy for us to become depressed and lethargic. My story with mental health isn't one I'll share here, but I will say it definitely gave me greater perspective of those who struggle from it that I would not have had otherwise. In my own experience, mental health is a very fragile thing, and it can quickly shift a huge part of your life, often to the point where you feel crushed and defeated. That said, I do not believe that mental health resources should be openly offered on the sever or its behalf, for as much sympathy and aid we might have to offer, peer support will never be an effective substitute for professional counsel. While opening yourself to talk, or offering words of consolation are certainly nice gestures (and yes, I'm guilty of this as well), those who don't have the proper experience in treating mental health may inadvertently make things worse, especially in more severe and delicate situations, which is the opposite of what we are ultimately seeking to do. Don't get me wrong, we as a community should absolutely be mindful and aware of the difficulties poor mental health can bring, especially when we interact with those individuals who are indeed suffering from such, but at the end of the day, a trained psychologist will always be what's best for them. I still think it's incredibly brave of you to speak your mind on this and open up about your own struggles. Thank you for that.

  14. Many cultures on LOTC have their own reason for disliking homosexuals, whether it’s the high elves due to need for children, or humans that zealously enact their Canonist faith. Notwithstanding the fact that this is indeed a fantasy server, we must also be mindful that the natural laws of consequence still applies, whether great or small in scale. Attempting to shy away from the reality of this conflict will only leave you more dissatisfied as you eventually come to realize cause and effect cannot be abolished. I would argue that the enaction of a character’s beliefs is not enough to justification to condemn this form of conflict—as the small potential minority that do indeed carry their actions through OOC spite are not indicative to the entire notion being condemnable as a whole. That said, there are definitely steps we can take to ensure we’re not being hurtful OOCly, as this is undoubtedly a touching subject for many. In any case, whether it’s sexism, homophobia, or any other form of in-character antipathy, we should be always conscious of the fact that there is still a person on the other side of the character, and that they should be treated with dignity regardless of their character. I would even encourage gay characters to take it a step further, and maintain a more secret and subtle affair—a forbidden love, if you will. After all, it’s these kind of encounters we hear about in all those classical romances and epic poems, and tales like these hold the potential to be a much more engaging roleplay experience, arguably to a greater degree than those made public through nuzzling roleplay in the middle of the tavern. Still, however you play your character is up to you, I simply ask that you don’t be so quick to condemn others as you claim them to condemn you.

  16. Good day my fellow minecraft gamers! As you already know, the ST are currently working on multiple projects ranging from self-teaching to Almaris, the list of which you can find on Squak’s Post here regarding the conclusion of the Lore Games. Today, however, I am hoping to receive some feedback regarding one of these projects—namely that of the Void Project, which seeks to make some amendments to Void magic, as well as add several additions to further invest players in its use. This project is by no means a small undertaking considering how imbedded Arcane Magic has been within the server’s history and the magical community as a whole, so we on the ST are doing our best to ensure that the end-result is one that both successfully expands upon Void Magic’s current foundation, and satisfies the playerbase. In light of this necessity, I come to you, the playerbase, in hopes of receiving feedback on one of the largest amendments that would be made to Void Magic as it currently stands—that being the redefinition and clarification of Voidal Connections and its physical effects. Various ST and players alike have all put forth attempts to clarify this crucial aspect of Void Magic interaction, many of which have been successful in defining it for that particular time. However, as time goes on, we must eventually revisit these in hopes of clarifying and amending points which may have been left vague or scrutinized in its duration. Traditionally, the use of Void Magic has taken a great toll upon mages, rendering them weak and unable to don heavy armaments or blades, nor receive blows without severing their connection. The connection piece prior to the currently accepted one was written by Sour_Doh, and touches upon various bases pertaining to a mage’s reaction, their reception to injury, equipment, wielding weapons, etc. and is generally what most would accept as balanced detriments to mages as commonly seen in RPGs or other games and media. In its most recent iteration, written by Toxcat, Void Connection is less conservative than that of Sour_Doh’s, though still maintaining some sense of debilitation in comparison to non-magi, merely not as severe. In this piece, a mage’s casting may still be disrupted, however, more leniency lies within their ability to equip armor and wield weapons when they are not casting, permitting them to switch between the two so long as the transition is not done in combat, and not to the degree of prowess as those who have studied in a physical field of combat. As both pieces are rather extensive, I will not list out specifics for each as they are both lengthy writes, though you are free to read to judge one, both, or none as you please. Should you have a preferred system, I ask that you vote it above and give some reasoning in a comment as to grant the ST better incite as to the views of players regarding this. If neither of the systems appeals to you, I’d also urge you to come up with some suggestions of your own that would allow a fresh and balanced take on how fatigue and connection might operate. Both mages and non-mages are offered the chance to vote and speak their mind, as ultimately any changes should seek to satisfy both ends of the spectrum. Make sure to keep discussion civil and provide meaningful feedback! Hope you all have a splendid day! - Sorcerio
