Your View: What's Wrong & What's Right with LotC?

The single largest issue I see with LoTC is a blatant refusal to listen to what the community at large thinks of things.  How long have people been complaining about Nexus?  How many times have people voiced their opinions on modern PvP?  There are clear issues that people have brought to light, and yet those with the ability to change things refuse.

Personally, I brushed this topic off as a transparent attempt to garner community goodwill.  The ol' ask for advice, then never act on it maneuver.  Perhaps this is the nihilist in me speaking, but it seems like no matter how many times issues like this are discussed, nothing happens and the community gets more and more disillusioned.

The LT and Administration are, believe it or not, effectively working with my team in order to produce a quality storyline for the server. I'm not being limited, I'm very happy with the amount of improvement we've made.

  • 501 is merely assisting me in producing fun events for the server. He's given me plenty of advice, and hopefully in the next month or so you'll see the changes that have been made!
  • If you could provide an example of where events are being railroaded, please shoot me a message! I'd be happy to sit down and talk with the ET that are being blamed.
  • "Arockstar and co forgetting to collect every chest from Gorums fun." This is simply not true! Cablam was the one who discovered it for me, and took care of the situation. I didn't have access to the logging plugin, so I could not look for it. However, as soon as I learned of Gorum's abuse - he was immediately banned.
  • ETs and LTs (im speaking for flamboyant here sorry babe) are not, and have not, been moderating situations when GMs aren't around. That's not our job.

1. I'm speaking about the past, as I bring up Raptor and Co.

2. I'm speaking about the past, as I bring up how 501 ruined the Atheran Undead.

3. The ET are under the ET Lead's supervision. If an ET can do this without you realizing it occured, there's something wrong with that. Ain't there.

4. Leowarrior against the uruks. Tp'd over and was given vanish in the uruk capital and went off at us in the capital. Harrison bitched him out for it yet it still occured. @Grubgoth Wud

Start small and expand as needed. Don't start off with massive cities and end up with them being a ghost town in a few months. Some cities that specifically come to mind are Haelun'or, Haria, Mardon, the Snow Elves, etc. Build for what you have, not for what you want to have.

Man I cannot agree with this point more. Having gigantic cities rise out of the middle of frozen wastelands and literal swamps getting paved over in weeks to make way for sprawling Romanesque metropolises has KILLED my immersion in this world.

I don't know when people are going to realize that you don't need to blow a huge amount of money to 'rebuild' your city every couple of months when activity dies down. Creating roleplay can be a lot cheaper and less time-consuming if you're even slightly creative (think Veris festivals and the Westerlands storyline), and if you aren't it's really as simple as sitting in your tavern and chatting up the townsfolk every day, or asking your skype chat if they'd like to log on and roleplay. Paving your entire city over might create a small burst of activity, but is it really worth killing evicting everyone in your city?

Alright, alright. I've gotten some pretty useful feedback so far and some...not.

I want to clear some things up before you all continue to rant and whatnot.

This isn't some goodwill bullshit. I could care less what your opinion of me is as a GM, or the other GMs and staff. When I came back, I decided to come back with a goal and that goal was to fix some aspect of Lord of the Craft and get some **** done. That's what I wanted to do last time but some stuff happened that prevented me from doing so.

I put this thread up not because any staff member asked me too, or the admins, or whatever. I made this thread to give myself a better idea of what the everliving **** you guys are complaining about in one place because I don't have the goddamn time to sit on my ass and scroll though all the complaint forums. This thread is my To-Do List. I haven't been around for a year and a half, I know most of the issues but that is simply from my perspective. I'm only one guy who isn't perfect. I'll need a lot more perspective if I want to get anywhere close to making the server a satisfying place to play on.

My goal with this thread is to gather intel so I can take the first steps toward making a server we as a community can be proud to be apart of and not just pop on here for the occasional decent roleplay and escape from reality. So for those who have posted so far, thank you for input. I'm compiling a list, checking it twice, going to see what makes LotC naughty and nice. For those who have yet to post, keep it civil, keep it clean, and keep it legible, for my sanity.

Whelp, this seems to have gone to crap as anything bad involving staff seems to make them unhappy. So Ima just say this.

Whats Wrong:

-Oren

People say that it was centralizing rp, but in reality it was all memey rp. I can't remember one quality RP I had in Felsen (maybe because I was new at the time and didn't like how things worked at first) or in Johannesburg (people were literally talking about how they were going to take their wife home and plough them). Not to mention, it wasn't also mainly for Humans. Because they tend to be racist and kill anyone who's not a human at any point in time.

-PvP

So taking a stroll through memory lane, most of the combat I've seen turned into PvP because there were 4 raiders and 3 defenders. Which put them at a great disadvantage. Why? Because the people who normally got PVP defaulted were people who weren't focused on combat and had all this gear, which the other group obviously knew. So the people I hung out with would be chased around until we were downed and killed when in reality, a good RP fight could've made it fair. This seems to be a re-occurring thing. The people who either don't have gear or don't have good enough gear, end up dying. The groups and the nations that focus on grinding always win a PVP battle instead of a group that focuses on RP. Which last time I checked, this was an RP server. Not a PVP one.

-Nexus

-Staff punishing inactive races.

I know I said I wouldn't bring staff into this. And I don't know much about this, but others have told me about this and it does seem pretty bad.

-Lack of advertisement.

The staff isn't advertising the server anymore, which is mainly how I found out about this server. I watched a few videos, talked to a few friends and came to enjoy it. I want new players to see this and feel the same!

-CAs.

Creature Apps I both support and do support. It's important to know the lore of the creature you're playing and not to have someone who obviously hasn't read the lore play one. But at the same time, it may be intimidating to other players to have to fill out a form that could be very long.

-Meme RP.

Memes are everywhere. And now they've found themselves inside our RP! Now I do put in a few memes every now and then to lighten the mood or just be funny, but it isn't overly memey. And most of the time I'll void it. But some people take it way too far and make RP based on the meme. And it's pretty bad to RP with them.

Thats about it. There you go. I got nothing else.

The problems you've listed here are mainly rp problems. You're complaining OOC'ly about Oren being raicst in rp, thats not something the staff can even work to prevent. Regardless there is bad quality rp in almost every city so that argument is invalud.

Server is so old that we are able to find too many problems. The fact that you can say 'back in my day' is a good example of how the server can't move forward. We didn't have as many problems in Aegis as we do now simply because there was less to deal with, less to look back on and only able to look forward.

I just want to have fun, everyone is such a buzzkill.

What's wrong?

  • Continuous and repetitive mistakes and failure to recognise these mistakes (or recognition of them with a subsequent failure to act in any meaningful way) - see freebuild, Nexus crafting, professions for key examples.
  • Failure to implement a good map change for the past five years, continuing to attempt to put in place systems we know will fail i.e. limited freebuild, partial regioning, wholly regioned. Hopefully 6.0 will see an end to this and a system of freebuild which actually works.
  • The fact Nexus remains on the server in any shape whatsoever when it's conceded fairly widely that its contribution to roleplay is massively outweighed by its harm to roleplay, get rid of it.
  • The fact we continue to restrict roleplay via professions and crafting plugins, effectively forcing people to grind and to focus on these systems rather than roleplay - introduce a system based on benefits which has no restrictions and revert to vanilla crafting rather than the ridiculously crap system in place right now.
  • The playerbase right now is about 40% made up of meme'ing dicks. Sort it out, start actually encouraging (and making) people act in a manner which does LotC proud rather than embarrasses it. You come in the forum and see constant trolling, ofc you're not gonna apply. PS. Playerbase, you're chasing players away, get a grip and start acting like a community.
  • The complete decentralisation of roleplay as a result of a thousand cities and nations and a map the size of America. Take drastic action to reduce nation sizes down to one official per nation and ensure 6.0 is small enough and nations are centralised enough that travel between them takes 10-15mins max. People won't like it but if you don't have the playerbase to sustain your sprawling cities (with five active players) then OOC action is required for server success.
  • Skype being used as an IC tool must be dealt with via metagaming rules and not allowed in any shape whatsoever.
  • Our external penetration to the wider Minecraft community is currently non-existent. The server has a reputation for being full of trolls and for not providing the roleplay experience it promises. Re-invigorate our marketing strategies and bring them in line with what the server will provide when it finally gets a grip.

What's right?

  • We have a dedicated staff team spending hours on the server, from admins down. They get a lot of grief, and frankly there have been many shocking decisions, but the screams of staff bias are complete bs. These teams are a credit to the server, they spend hours (unpaid) on the community seeking to improve it, and they simply need to work out a plan of action to fix the server.
  • We have many good, active and committed players who want to see LotC succeed (some of those even being you meme'ing idiots) and this is the only reason LotC hasn't fallen in on itself yet. This is the community which needs to become more vocal and act as a welcoming party for new players and set examples of the behaviour required by the server.

tl;dr: see the numerous threads written a month ago which have again (unsurprisingly) been ignored.

#WhatsWrong

- The process of becoming a member and having your application accepted should be made easier. Not as in lowering our standard for applications, but in making lore more easily read and understood by new players. Perhaps making a lore intro video or at least some Wiki page that simply sums up all of the major lore and serves as to inform new players about the basic lore and history of LOTC.

- Retention. I was aware that at one point some GM was trying to make a project for new players where he compiled players from different races that new players could go to, to start RP'ing and be given something to do. Maybe I missed it but I don't see this in action. Maybe have some pre written message for each race with a short list of people/areas where they could go to find RP with their race that could just be posted along with the accepted post on their application.

- Big believer in the way maps are approached needs to be changed. Make the map smaller and do more custom building of the map that makes the terrain interesting. More high fantasy.

- I think people voted for a global villain so I assume that it is being worked on, if not, villain.

- Tying into the previous point about the map. We need more ways of marketing the server to the broader community. Media team. Maybe start recording timelapses when the ET is doing a big planned build. Showing off our server and our map is important to capturing new players interest.

- Also Nexus

What's right?

- The server has dedicated staff that try their best to improve this server for all of us and I thank them for that.

Im just gona say whats wrong:

Nexus.. just get rid of it. It makes this a prison MMO with roleplaying capabilities. No one wants it.

PvP default and defender default is ****. I understand why it's there but it ruins rp. I've been in a group of bandits and we did some cool **** until a guy calls pvp defender default and ruins all the fun rp. We hid in some trees and dropped down, surroundig them untill /looc "PVP DEFAULT!!@111!?&(+$+??1!!1!)?2!!_(1!!2!3!!2!4!_)'!37!#!1!!!@@12#1111!?+!+#-@1!"

The map is too big and there are too many setlements. Big maps make rp spread out and stagnant. Plrase put a limit on settlements or something.

PS get rid of Nexus

Wrong: Nexus. Unless I spend 100 or more hours grinding I can't make a diamond sword even if I roleplay a smith. The curve is so damned steep if you aren't spending money after spam leveling something easier and then spending 10$ irl dosh to transfer it then it takes you what feels like years to get to anguelic.
