Aeran, another language is INCREDIBLY useful. Heck, a lot of the world makes their children learn English next to their own language. It helps you connect to other parts of the world, and it can help you in your job. A lot of colleges/jobs require at least 2 years of another language.

^ This. I live in Canada, so French is extremely useful. Plus, I plan on entering international relations, history or education, making a second language even more useful.

I don't doubt it. Sometimes, though, it seems realism or immersion draws focus away from the substance of storytelling, that being the give and take between characters. Not always the case, but certainly sometimes.

I don't see how species of lilypads detract from character interaction, unless you're using it as a metaphor for broader issues. In that case, I can possibly agree.

Mostly the metaphor bit. Saying variation in lilypads directly contributes to storytelling negatively WOULD be a stretch on my part. It's more the implications of these things, I think. Sorry for the impromptu debate, though! I kind of put a damper on things, I think.
