FOUR CANONIST PRINCES ON MARRIAGE

We, the Queens of the Petra, Balian, Numendil, and the Viceroy of Hyspia, have put ourselves to the mercy of testing for signs of Iblees and Darkspawn, and have been found innocent. We have undertaken a pilgrimage together across Canondom, and we have considered the wills of our people. Peoples battered by secular war, by the infringement of Iblees on our righteousness, and who have been held together through it all with one simple thing: their love for eachother.

 

For many years, marriage between man and man, or woman and woman has remained illegal and resultantly perceived as taboo due to vague, possibly misinterpreted, scripture surrounding the processes and rules of the Holy Union. In consultation with various authorities and students of the Holy Scrolls, and in thoughtful meditation and prayed with He who sent the Holy Word for us, we sovereigns have come to the conclusion that GOD has not sent direct word upon the matter. We, four Canonist Princes- three Coronated by the Pontiff by the Grace of God, have dwelled upon this issue for many years. Together in thought we have pondered one question: why should we use the authority of the state to declare love between consenting humans a sin?

 

By forcing the opinion that this version of love is wrong, we force upon our people much more heinous sins. We force them to undertake the sin of lying. To lie of the love one holds for another, you deny yourself and GOD the truth of your own soul, you lie of the very thing you hold most dear and you lie to cover up the shame that has been forced upon you. We force them to undertake the sin of fornication. Unless they force themselves to give up their love for one another, with no option to properly wed, they are forced to commit sin in order to lay or remain with one another in a romantic capacity. We force them to undertake the sin of envy. To envy the openness of love that others have.

 

In rigidly enforcing certain mediums, save those most necessary, of the expression of love, We force our own secular peoples, and the Canonist flock, to begin to look elsewhere for the answers and acceptance that they seek. It is no coincidence that more same gender couples are among the ranks of elves and other races. The acceptance of these practices are by no means ruinous to their civilizations, and just as such worries were expressed during the age when women gained the right of equal inheritance, so too are fears of societal degradation upon the permittance of marriage between the same sexes unfounded in present reality. This love, the same as between a man and a woman, is not an optional choice. When we deny them the meagre right to love, we push them away from GOD'S light, we send them to Iblees through our own prejudice. We are meant to be one people under GOD, and yet they are pushed away.

 

As from the studies of the Balian Monsignor, Prince Enrico Amadeus, Count of Abretta;

 

The Scrolls themselves, I find, do not declare the marriage of man and man, nor woman or woman, to be sinful. In fact, that which is sinful is to force them to lie with one another outside of marriage: “... and none shall lie together but in holy union.” (Scroll of Virtue 3:9)

 

Of course, the Canticle of Temperance within the Scroll of Virtue does decree two more instances in which one shall not lie with another: “You shall not lie with your kin, nor those of other tribes.” (Scroll of Virtue 3:9)

 

In summary, the Canticle of Virtue poses that it is sinful to lie with one of your kin, one of another tribe (race), and outside of marriage. There is no inherent sin in a man lying with a man, nor a woman with a woman.

 

The scholarly priest here may stop me and say that the earlier part of the Canticle of Temperance decrees marriage between only a man and a woman: “And as I made for you the worldly pleasures, so too have I made the pleasures of the spirit, and the love of the husband and wife.” (Scroll of Virtue 3:5)

 

But I believe this not to be true, the Scroll of Virtue was delivered unto Exalted Horen, and so it is likely that the only marriage to have happened at the time is that of Exalted Horen and Saint Julia. It is an example, not a rule.

 

Further, I do find that the keyword in the passage is love, not husband and wife. GOD has made for us the love that we hold for one another, as husbands, as wives, regardless of who we hold it for. It matters not if the love is held by a husband for a wife or a husband, so long as the love is held faithfully and truly.

 

In due time, the theologians within the Curia and within the nations shall come to this revelation, a path that the Holy Church, I believe, has been on before, but yet to see to fruition.

Therefore, we four Canonist Princes hereby declare;

 

That no secular laws shall prevent the marriage between man and man, or woman or woman, or shall be allowed to stand or to be codified into law.

 

That the secular laws of our nations shall protect these partnerships, whether married or not, from persecution.

 

We, four Canonist Princes, shall put no blockade in front of the love of two. We petition His Holiness, Pontiff Sixtus VI to consider our words and opinions on the matter as GOD has not forbidden it. We have listened to the hearts of our peoples, our sections of the Canonist Flock that you lead, and there is change that is necessary. Allow our peoples to bind themselves in matrimony to those that they love so that they shall no longer be pushed from GODs light. We do not ask you to force all priests of Canonism to conduct these marriages, only that those that believe the same as us be allowed to bind these souls under Canonism.

John, at the end of his pilgrimage with Sybille, Cesar, and the many others, felt his eyes well with tears at the letter. The man bowed his head, refusing the smile that dared creep upon his face; as foul a man he was for marrying Lucia only as a guise, she was dead, now - and perhaps he could live happily.

 

Tired and horribly fatigued, he came home to his beloved at the end of the day, offering out a flier.

"Oh, for all that is holy..." Gwenyth reached to take the missive of many that had been placed on her desk that day. "Wait-" She called to the staff who had brought the missive in, "They did it!" She exclaimed! A hand slamming continuously on her desk and rattling through the Aquilae walls. The staff member, however, was not too pleased with the loud banging that rang through the small office. "Oh, mea darlings get tae love freely..."

"To love!" Princess Ariadne called out as the missive was signed. She was only ten, though she understood the ideas of free love. To her, everybody deserved love in any form.

Cesar II willingly and readily took up the task and willingness to sign this document. He has become older, his age was nearing the end of his middle aged years. There were many things which he wished to do but was unable to in order to keep up his image as a Canonist Prince. Nevertheless, his allies’ words and support gave him the newfound strength to do so. Cesar’s love will always be for Karyna. But he knew Hyspia could be something more, something more inclusive. It is something his Padre would have wanted. It is something his children would have wanted. Thus, he was content with signing this. Henceforth, Hyspia shall recognize all love amongst humans.

Dimitri looked over the missive, having heard of the pilgrimage coming to Hyspia but he was too injured from a siege to go to greet them, “Ea’ve never seen why the church disliked same sex couples te begin with. Let people be people…” He muttered to himself before folding the missive and placing it in a pile with already read missives. He then took a mouthful of whiskey and leaned back in his chair, staring out over Hyspia from his office, thinking about how happy people would be if love could just be accepted.

 

 

 

A young recruit of the Balian Armada read over the missive when it was given, “I was there for that! I made a difference!” She then ran off to show her best friend Pebble. Her horse.

Somewhere in the Seven Skies, a once disgraced Alstreim sheds a tear. It had been years, and finally, it had been done. Hans von Alstreim leaned towards his mother, bowing his head into her shoulder. "Hope that ze future of humans can be happier than I was." He murmured. "A shame I did not live to see it changed."

Atticus Reinhold takes the missive from Artel with a shaking hand- Being handed the draft is one thing, but seeing it completed is another. At the comment he chuckles, but it’s slightly damp with tears he’s fending off once more. “I’m sorry- It looks like you’re going to go under.”
