  6. Thought I don't play anymore I do like to keep my eye on the forums. In regards to this.. There was once a time where a dark mage was enough of a threat that instant death on capturing was justified, because capturing one was no easy feat. Likewise, in this same time, a voidal or holy mage was diverse and useful enough to be actively sought out. You fought magic with magic, not brawn - unless in greater numbers. Now, I genuinely believe a good swordsman could beat any magic wielder. I'm not saying what should or should not be the case, I'm not saying to go back to the old days, but it's important to realize that the view on what you do to a dark/villainous character has never changed. The change occurred in the strengths and skills of those playing these characters, and the increasing boldness of those non-magic folk who are realizing... That these great threats aren't threats any longer. Perhaps not an active thought in their mind, but one slowly invading everyone who comes to face these once-threats. TLDR; Something hits different about shades when half the playerbase use their tendrils for an uwu tail/erp and half try and be dark overlords. They stop being scary. Other magics too. Not to mention the mechanical restrictions as magic over time slowly becomes more streamlined and less guidelined. For villainy as a whole, I've never really fallen into trouble with anyone I've ever actually been a villain towards. People unrelated to it have complained, called names, tried to say it was "poor rp" despite never being present to begin with. But anyone I've ever actually threatened, swung a sword at, or even killed, generally tends to compliment the RP and thought behind the actions. In my brief tenure as a shade rampaging around Atlas, everyone that died to him PK'd before I stopped due to people unrelated to the RP not wanting me to play a villain that killed people. I bitched out, and to those who would do the same I say - If you are a villain, direct your audience to those who appreciate it. If others complain or come for you, damn them and continue on your way.
  7. I swore I wouldn't write one of these, but here I am. I feel there's a few things still weighing on my shoulders that I need to let go of - I'll begin by saying that I don't want to declare LoTC as a terrible, horrible server. Nor do I want to declare it a wonderful experience. It simply is. It exists, I played it. It is a game like any other; a way of passing the time, frustrating at times and enjoyable at others. I will say however, that I resigned myself to eventually leave when I was something like fifteen or sixteen years old. For years I told myself that the moment I turned eighteen, I would be too old to continue playing and would have to move onto other parts of my life. I joined at fourteen years of age. Now, I'm nearly twenty. I found myself attempting to try and right wrongs in the time I was on the server, to change perceptions and outlooks. Why? I'm not too certain, but lo' and behold, the time has come. I'll be departing LoTC; weep, pray, do whatever you please. That's the majority of it right there. I'm departing, it's nothing explicitly to do with the server itself, though a few players did play a part. One could safely sum up my departure to.. growing up, however. No need to pick anything apart. If anyone is interested in the weights I carry and the reasons I make this a post, read below and come to your own conclusions: With that tale over, I would like to leave @ScreamingDingo, @SquakHawk, and @Malaise an apology for lashing out a few months ago. That was immature. I leave the three of you with this however: Imagine if you stood by a doorway, and one person who passed you insulted you once. You ignore it, right? If it's the same person repeatedly, you have them thrown out, removed, etc. If it's one, it's a standalone case. Besides, you need to have thick skin to play LoTC. But imagine if every third person insulted you, also a single time. People who, sometimes, you do not know. People who have never heard you speak, never met you. How many insults do you take before you cave? How many cuts does it take for your thick skin to bleed? And when you do break, who do you lash out at? Who do you aim your frustrations to, when each person's action individually was small? So small that you are just whining to complain about it? I envy the three of you, able to take heat seemingly endlessly with no outright backlash from you to others. I don't mean to insinuate a lack of emotion, but instead a great amount of control. Again, I envy you. But understand that I, and perhaps others, have limits vastly lower. I apologize that my frustrations then were aimed at you when they should not have been. I understand some of you in particular already go under a lot more stress and did not need that added on top. And do not let this be misconstrued with why I am departing; I have grown, and merely decided it is time to close this door. I've a career to pursue, a life now. A plan. I'm not so conceited as to leave while pinning blame or hiding my mistakes. Lastly, and truly lastly, a few parting words to a few I may not speak with as often from now on: I'm still contactable over discord for those interested. And please don't deny my magic students I'll try and find them new teachers and keep you updated. See you folks later

  13. The ST run the server, not the Mods.
  14. “Good riddance,” Thalrian uttered from whatever dark corner he occupied, unable to forget the years of conflict shared with this demon in particular.
  15. What are the thoughts of an RP-Combat style less oriented on exact descriptions of each motion and more general descriptions of intent? I’ll elaborate – Currently on lotc, a set of RP combat emotes might run something like this:

Player 1 | Jason sends himself quickly jerking forward, bringing his sword skyward before letting it come sailing into a downwards strike towards Harold’s head.

Player 2 | Harold jerks back, leaning away slightly as the end of the sword narrowly avoids cleaving his skull – instead leaving a cut in its place, below his cheek. He follows by regaining his stance and position, waiting for the next blow.

Roleplay is writing a story, collaboratively. It’s a personal viewpoint of mine that roleplay to the degree written above drives us away from that point. But it’s all we know. However, should you pick up a book with fighting as a part of it, a scene might play out differently, like this(Of course made to fit what would be two individuals instead of 1 author writing):

Player 1 | Jason readies himself, sword leveled to Harold. A mere moment of stillness came to pass before he was sent hurtling forward, an onslaught of swings and blows levied at Harold, each one meant to kill.

Player 2 | Harold was not prepared for the swift and ferocious attacks, sent stumbling back and narrowly avoiding the first wave of blows before meeting them with his own – sword flashing through the air to parry and strike back, and regain his lost ground.

I imagine if two people consent, changing a style of RP fighting to this would be very allowed and viable. It flows with the general idea that emote times are not consistent between one and the other, and may still be “good” roleplay and portray a fight to watchers in a less boring way then waiting 20 minutes for a single sword swing from @Heero(Hey Mr. Thesaurus). Though bringing a style of combat fitting this viewpoint into someone unaware/unsuspecting would come across as.. Wrong, given that one emote might describe a myriad of actions in a simple way; “double emoting” only when brought to the first style of RP combat exampled, and yet perfectly valid otherwise. In short, the two styles of RP proposed here would be unable to mix.

As written, I would say that there’s no majorly different chances for people to powergame in either form of description. The Merit to the latter over the former lays in what I believe is a lack of argument over small, specific actions that could instead be glossed over as unnecessary and irrelevant; and maybe not taking 5 hours to do a fight because of it.

I don’t really have a big plan with this, I was just thinking about it and wonder if anyone has any interesting thoughts on the matter ! I didn’t even begin to touch on how magic would interact with it, but I have my ideas.

  18. Man. Seriously though a problem like this needs a step back and distant view – A lot of people will also get instantly murdered if they do not instantly murder a shade. If someone attempts to make it a give and take, they’re considered just as bad. Basically to do what you’re asking would completely **** them over as well. With a problem like this I genuinely don’t know where one would start on figuring it out – I tried once and gave up pretty quickly. You’re looking at a problem that spans across all of the currently existing communities, and its hard to address it one at a time. Though honestly I just like playing the absolute nutjob that is my current shade more, instant death to me or not Now @Archipelego I’m going to quote one thing from Alpha that you probably should take note of tbh: Having something exist purely, 100% without exception, as a permanent punishment with a risk of having yourself force PK’d at any moment, is a bit bland and unrealistic. I do like all of the current downsides, but I’d argue that it needs anything to actually have an appeal for anyone to play. I’d keep it regardless because the entire premise of my shade revolves around everything the magic entails. This magic, as it stands, is more along the lines of a curse applied through shade magic rather than shade magic itself. I’m not even arguing to give it combat uses, but probably more than 2 rituals – one being just teaching and the other pseudo-PKing your character – would be nice. You argue that this would apply better shade RP to the server and yet those two interactions with their rituals are already based entirely in shades themselves. Are you, in any capacity, willing to add or change anything to what’s currently listed? Either make it at least 4 slot or give it a 3rd ritual use that isn’t purely aesthetic and relatively uses. I’m not going to pretend I have some grand scheme in my mind envisioned of what it could be, but I could definitely throw out some vague ideas if you can’t think of anything. At least something like this if you’re taking away our parasites, who to some of us, regardless of your experiences, made and drove decent enough RP. also a question about the lore as-is: So the shadow **** is non-combative, but what about using it aesthetically during combat? I.E. Having your shadow look like a monster or sm **** while you’re swinging your sword.
  19. I liked the parasite personalities when they weren’t played as just a second individual w/ no real difference from an elf or human, removing that is kind of sad when you could alternatively make a proper ruling on how they should behave. My only question though is if there is a progression system within this(i.e. Waiting 4 months for a TA, or just being taught the ritual any time after becoming a shade)? Tiers don’t seem to be relevant for something like this so I wont even ask about those. Beyond that.. Neato. I don’t have much of a presence on the server but seeing anything like this is nice
  20. @Wretched I am utterly convinced Natayshi is still alive and babbling nonsense
