A thesis on Grace and Redemption

I. The Role of Grace and Redemption in Cannonist Lives

Sin, in simple terms it the matter which separates and divides the simple man from GOD, sins comes in various forms and entities, it could be minute as simple as thievery or it could be large as large as infidelity, such are examples of course but the matter of sin is simple, it is the single action that divides and separates GOD from man. However, if sin is the river that keeps apart GOD and man, then it is GRACE which is the bridge that breaks the divide and allows for humanity to be restored in the graces of GOD. Through simple actions such as prayer, sacraments of baptism and marriage and devotion. Through these means does the canonist flock thus shift towards renewal of divinity within the faith. 

The scroll of Auspice, as revealed to us through the, Exalted Sigismund, also reveals this to us.

It should be noted that Grace however is not simply the forgiveness of sin, but it can rather be viewed as an active transformation of the soul. Leading to the belief that those who turn to GOD, find themselves purified and strengthened through divine intervention. In Balian, this manifests in various traditions witnessed throughout the lands, from marital traditions, to masses held by the clergy both foreign and local. It is instead the importance that is placed upon pilgrimages, often journeying upon the various landscapes observed within the Kingdom of Balian and even journeying on pilgrimages to the lands of Rhen that denizes of the Kingdom are able to truly reflect upon their deeds and seek prayer to absolve what sins they may carry.

II. The Tablets of Saint Lothar and Their Roles in the flock of Balian

Within the Kingdom of Balian, the tablets of Saint Lothar are amongst some of the most important and influential sources of the faith’s writings. Each tablet is said to have the divine wisdom carried by Saint Lothar that was imparted onto him during his life. For modern Balians, this knowledge and wisdom helps to serve as a guidance for the faithful flock, these tables are used to reinforce many of the virtues set within the scroll of Virtue, delivered by the Exalted Horen.

So what do the tablets of Saint Lothar teach us? And how might they find relevance on the matter of grace?

The First Tablet - On Faith: Teaches us about the unconditional faith and devotion to GOD, the ideas of this table follow closely with that of the Scroll of Virtue. Calling for mankind to follow the will of GOD.

The Second Tablet - On The Wheel: Informs us about the meditative state of divinity and destiny in the aspect of guidance. The tablet mirrors the prophecies spoken within the Scroll of Auspice by the Exalted Sigismund.

The Third Tablet - Kin: Explains to us the duty of family and community. Echoing the covenant of Exalted Horen between his children, it is seen as a path to show us the role of community in canonist life.

The Fourth Tablet - On Commerce: The translation of the fourth tablet of St. Lothar gives us a general idea on the matters of trade and economic justice that should be observed. These ideals are ones that are reflective of the order set forth within the Scroll of Gospel.

The Seventh Tablet - To Love is to: Is a reflection and ponderance on the divine nature of love. The tablet emphasises to us that to love is not simply a mere emotion but rather it is the devotion of two souls who seek to become one, leading to one of the highest levels of both devotion and sacrifice. The tablet is a general reminder that to love, is to find Grace, for love itself is path towards redemption and renewal.

The Thirteenth Tablet - Al-Khatam: The final Tablet: The final tablet of Saint Lothar is a summary, it is a conclusion of the Saint Lothar’s wisdom imparted upon the world. The final tablet is a reminder that all aspects of life must be governed and lived by virtue and faith, drawing upon the teachings of each of the Exalted Scrolls.

What is the relevancy of such tablets with Grace and Redemption?

The relevance of these tablets to the theme of Grace and Redemption is important and profound for those encompassed within the diocese of Lotharia, spanning the Kingdom of Balian. Whilst not all tablets have been found and subsequently translated, the relevance of the ones which have given us advice and guidance for the faithful on how to lead a righteous life but also a path for spiritual renewal within life. The teachings provide us not only with simple religious and theological teachings but we may also find the means and ways by which we may return to GOD’s light, relishing in his grace and redemptive qualities.

To seek redemption and the grace of GOD, one must realise that the works of former leaders of the faith and teachings of those such as Saint Lothar teaches - us that redemption is not an instantaneous thing, it cannot be. Rather, redemption is a continuous journey of faith, action and self-betterment, it is a process that takes time and true devotion, mirroring the divine mercy which is spoken in the Scroll of Auspice.

The Lotharion Part 1: Departure from Korades 

Foreword:

The Lotharion is an esteemed folktale of the Old Balthalite people recollecting the journey of Prince Lothar of the Balthalite Empire, later to become Patron Saint of the Lorraine Cross, to the continent of Aegi after sealing his corrupted father. However, due to the oral tradition of the Balthalites, it is difficult to ascertain what aspects, if any, are  factual. Most scholars of the natural world consider its fantastical aspects inflated. Yet, it has endured as a lasting tale that is told to Rhenyari, both young and old, finally being transcribed for Aevosians by Lady Caliope Mariya d’Arkent.

This first part of the story is set on the island of Korades, after Prince Lothar had converted the natives to the true faith, the Old Balthalite strain of Proto-Canonism. It depicts the strong sailing and mercantile traditions of the region, displaying the surrounding port in its full glory as well as the Empyrean aspects of The Archpriest Iosan and Prince Lothar share a conversation before Lothar’s departure, discussing the faith and the journey ahead of them. And so here we lay our scene: 

Lothar and his host had sailed to Korades after they had slayed his Father and redeemed the people of Balian from the darkness that shadowed over them. Yet this journey was not easy, and both rations and the well-being of their ships were debased, It was then that Lothar willingly accepted the aid of the people of Korades, pitching camp by the port for his crew while intermingling with the locals. Yet, once learning of the origins of these foreigners, the Koradi demanded payment in the form of teaching, for they wanted not for gold. Lothar spent many moons in the hospitality of these people and taught them the ways of the Balthalite. He spoke of the one true Creator of the world, his aenguls, and the importance of Virtue and Spirit as told to him by the Scrolls of the Exalted.

One day, before the Magisters of the Koradi, he was asked to explain the concept of a single GOD, for the islanders worshipped many animal-faced dieties. So he laid three sticks on the floor of the forum and spoke unto the assembly, “the bar above is the Seven Skies, where GOD resides and rules over his Kingdom, amongst his aenguls, Saints, and Exalted.” He then moved his hand to the lesser stick on the cross and said, “this represents our world, to remind us that we are below the seven skies and must aspire to the Skies.” Finally, he pointed to the absence below the second bar “This is the void. There is nothing here, for in the absence of GOD there is only nothingness.”

And so the Koradi were converted. They took up the Cross of Lorraine as an icon of the faith. It was painted on houses, worn as necklaces, and sewn into clothes. Chief amongst these new disciples was Iosan, a wealthy merchant, who abandoned his life of vice and spent his vast wealth building a temple to the Creator in Koradotta, the capital of the island. Atop this wonderous temple, in the place of honour, stood the Lorraine Cross, made of polished silver. To this day it is said Koradi remembers the words of Iosan when it was mounted, “let this be your reminder of our new faith and trust in the Seven Skies above.”

At the port of Korades, a beautiful structure made of a bright speckled diorite stands before several boats beset in resplendent regalia. Amidst this revelry stood a delegation of the faith, and opposite them an armed escort of the Balthalite Empire. Before the armoured men  stood a tall man of tanned skin in dazzling silver and gold armour, a man known as Lothar. The man he spoke with was none other than Archpriest Iosan of Korades, who wore the white and purple robes of the clergy.

“Our people have received enlightenment through your teachings and through GOD” Iosan declared, a firm smile upon his face as the Prince seemed to focus back on the conversation.

“I did nothing but what GOD directed me to do. I am naught more than a vessel for his divine teachings” the Balianite explained, his face maintaining one of neutrality. It was then he turned to observe the temple and rested his hand on his hilt.

As he admired the glory unto GOD Iosan interjected, “you are correct, yet you brought the light of His  love to us, it is for that you have our eternal thanks for all that you have done.” The cleric peered over Lothar’s shoulder, spotting an impatient midshipman awaiting the presence of his prince, so he went to conclude the conversation., “It seems your host wishes to leave for your home after all these years”. The Clergymen gestured to the place he had been looking to with his Aurum Crozier.

The Prince swivelled on his heel to get a proper sight of the Midshipman, who merely offered a nod towards Lothar, affirming the crew’s desire to depart the Isle. “It seems that way, old friend, shall we pray before we depart?” he queried as he turned to face the priest once more. The Archpriest offered his smile over to Lothar as his hands went to clasp together in  the fashion of prayer, Lothar following suit. 

“Dear GOD above us-” the prayer began as their heads rose high to peer at the skies above them. “With your Spirit and Virtue guide us in all that we do, through our wrongs and through our rights. Guide this Vessel and its crew back to their home safely and hear our prayers for their continued success and wellbeing. Hear us in these moments and these words. Amen.” the Archpriest enounced, awaiting the inevitable response.

“Amen.” said the Prince and the nearby crew.

Just when the prayer concluded, Lothar placed a hand on the shoulder of Iosan. “Thank you Geron, GOD be with you and Koradi, your hospitality to our people will naught be forgot.” “Safe travels, Prince Lothar” offered the Archpriest, signing the Lorraine over the man. As silence came over both, Lothar walked towards his vessel, boarding it and greeting his crew.

The crew began to row into the open sea as Lothar stood upon the deck, gazing out to the Isle of Korades. As he turned from the other four ships, he saw the Archpriest heading back into the city. The wind blew through the tall cypress trees and the red and gold banners that adorned the small white buildings. While Lothar wished it not to be so, he knew he would not see this island again. For he heard the beckoning calls of the blue sea before him.

Nobelissimos: The August Heroes of Balian

“Above all other affairs of state rests the duty to propagate the spirit of the nation. A great army, a flourishing court, and a strong arm of law are all essential, but we look only to our ancestors in the Empire to see where that may not be enough. Without national spirit, the age of heroes is lost, and communities become undone to greed, ambition, and personal interest.

 One way to hone national spirit is by honoring those among us who have made significant contributions to our traditions, who have selflessly lived their lives to enrich our people and our way of life. In Balian, we will call these individuals Nobelissimos, or most noble, and they serve as shining examples of the honor, virtue, kinship, and ingenuity that define our culture.

Through the creation of the Nobelissimo state honor, the Kingdom of Balian not only celebrates the deeds of these individuals, but also imbues the youth of our realm with the values and ideals that have made our traditions great. The Nobelissimos will inspire future generations to strive for greatness, to put the needs of our people before their own, and to always defend our culture with honor and integrity.

It is with great pride and humility that We declare these individuals as Nobelissimos. Their names will be forever etched in the annals of our history, and their deeds will be remembered for all time. We urge each and every one of you to take the time to learn about these heroes, to tell their stories to your children and grandchildren, and to live by the examples they have set. Together, We will ensure that our culture endures and thrives for many centuries to come."

King Alexander I on the Nobelissimos, 111 S.A., delivered at court.

In all Kingdoms and cultures, it is seen as a downright necessity to honour your dead, a value applied most of all to those that have inspired their people and changed the very course of history by their actions. Such exceptional behaviour deserves posthumous acknowledgement by both the citizenry and the state. It is for this reason that the Balianese Crown wishes to reintroduce the Nobelissimos and induct several to the various tiers of this ranking.

Since the fall of the Eighth Empire, there have been a mere couple deemed worthy of such an honour that are themselves not of Balianese blood and descent. It is considered a great honour to give such a prestigious set of titles to someone who was not directly involved in the Kingdom’s affair and such is not taken lightly.

The tiered rankings are separated into three distinctive categories, each defined by their name and the respective qualities. First there is the Patricos, known as Patricians in the Balian language, are those of who have lived both virtuous and impressive lives that have been considered as a model for how their descendants should act. 

The Nobelissimo, or most noble, title itself is offered unto figures that are highly respected by the Balianese Crown for their life's work and how they influenced Balianese history. These figures are given an epithet befitting their nature, defining their exceptional qualities or what they are best known for. 

Finally there is the Balianissimos, otherwise known as ‘the most Balian’. Those who are considered Balianissimos are considered to be crucial to the history and development of the Kingdom, and without whom, the Kingdom would not stand. Often a title reserved only for the King and Queen regnants that have passed, it is this title that is considered above all others. 

Henceforth, upon the death of a reigning Monarch, the new King shall convene with their council and assess who has passed during the reign of their predecessor and who would be considered worthy to join the honoured few of Balian’s August heroes. 

The Balianissimos

John I ‘The Founder’, First King of Balian: PROTOBALIANISSIMO

• There should be little question as to whether Balian's Gian al Gran, or John I, deserves the great state honor of Nobelissimo. He is the prototype of the Balianese identity. When faced with the ruin of the Holy Orenian Empire at the end of the Brother’s War, it was he with the foresight to envision a new society free from the trappings of the old regime. 

John navigated multiple crises, from the initial Petrine exodus from the northern continent into the Terra del Sur to various armed conflicts such as the Harvest War, the EATO War, and the Ruffian’s War. He also oversaw the initial construction of the oasis of Atrus upon the Monterosa and settled its many nobles. As Balian’s first duke and king, the country would never have come to prominence without his personal investment and leadership.

He is styled Protobalianissimo, or the most exceptional Balianese over other exceptional Balianese, for his role in founding the nation.

Alexander I ‘The Just’, Second King of Balian: JUSTISSIMO

• Alexandros, later Alexander I, followed after a man of high repute, John ‘The Founder’. As such many deemed it a near impossibility for the boy to live up to the image of his predecessor. However, Alexander achieved his own fame and adoration for his actions. Forging an unbreakable alliance with the Kings of Haense and Aaun, The King presided over a period of diplomatic peace and prosperity, steering his Kingdom to improve upon its existing structure. With aid from Sarson Halgrim, an agent of the Ba’as Kingdom, and his Amiratus Ledicort Vuiller, Alexander reformed the Chambers of the King into the first Duana of Balian, a system that has gone unchanged since its creation. 

In the later years of his reign. Alexander contended with the looming threat of Cloudbreaker’s Necrotic attack on his Kingdom, threatening to destroy his people. However, under his rule the denizens of Almaris came together to combat the threat and do away with the darkness that loomed. With a new Atrus built in the aftermath of the battle, the new capital became the staging grounds for the Atrus Covenant, a continent spanning pact that protected descendants from the darkspawn of the world. Throughout his life, the King always chose peace and justice, most famously before becoming King, when the Acrean foot soldiers made an attempted on the Baron Galbraith’s life, constituting both a war and execution of the criminals. Despite such charges, the King would not have anyone killed, merely warded to the church and the Harvest Confederacy forced to elect itself a new leader.

Adrian I ‘The Unwavering’, Third King of Balian: INCONDICIONISSIMO 

• A constant friend of his own people, King Adrian I took the mantle of King of Balian as firstborn of his father King Alexander I. Within the first years of his reign, the Kingdom was affronted with the continental threat of the Mori’Quessir. Despite a tough fight, all descendants of Almaris were forced to leave for Aevos. Finding a new home on this continent, King Adrian founded the new city of Portoregne, where the first true Balianese democracy was founded with the City Charter of Portoregne, written with his Amiratus Gaius var Ruthern, Legate Elena de Lyons and Censor Lydia Novellen. 

Sadly this King found himself at the centre of much tragedy, losing his firstborn and heir, Johanna Casimira, to an sailing accident and going through a very turbulent and public divorce, His Majesty shone through his unwillingness to back down in face of this adversity. Even when his third born and new heir was kidnapped by the Ferrymen and Veletz he stood strong, the Veletz War beginning soon after as a result of such. The King’s life was one of defiance in the face of struggle, finally only dying due to Alchemy related illnesses, not the war that he led with the Kingdom.

Sybille I ‘The Stubborn’, First Queen of Balian: OBSTINISSIMA

• An oddity by virtue of being the third born child and yet still Queen after her father’s death, Sybille was also the First Queen Regnant of Balian in her own right. She inherited the Throne of Unity during the war against Veletz, the very same people who had kidnapped her from her home. The first success of her reign was defending her home from imminent invasion by the Veletzians, a day that became known as ‘Hippo’s Gorge’ by the Canonist world soon after. Soon the war was won by the Grand Covenant leading to a prolonged peace. Amongst tax reforms and much more, Queen Sybille also settled aggressions with both a druid circle that settled on the borders of the Kingdom and the Caelian vassal of Haelun’or. Despite their demands, both nations backed down and paid tribute to apologise for their respective aggressions.

Alongside the Kings of Haense and Aaun and the Queen of Petra, Sybille founded the Covenant of Man, a formation of the Grand Covenant into a more codified and powerful alliance between Canonism’s foremost powers. It was her and the then Amiratus Kristoff var Ruthern who drafted the constitution for the Covenant of Man. One of the last acts of Queen Sybille was defending House Ruthern of Balian from those of Haense as a war between the two seemed inevitable. Unwilling to bend to her supposed allies demands, she sought mediation from the church, ending in a bloodless peace. The Queen died from wounds associated with her part fighting the Azdrazi during the ascension of Azdromoth, the woman attempting to avenge her husband.

The Nobelissimos

Bl. Anne Augusta: THE RUBINISSIMA

• Anne I, Holy Orenian Empress, also known as Anne the Good, has earned a special regard in Balianese society as one of its great heroes and ancestors. While all Balianese would acknowledge their Petrine roots emerge from Peter III’s reign, Anne’s war against the Inferni in the sands of Korvassa, as well as her nation’s exodus from Arcas to Almaris ring closer with the spirit of Balian, which also suffered darkspawn calamity at the hands of the undead dragon Cloudbreaker, as well as a similar exodus from the heartlands to the dunes of the southern continent.

Anne is seen as a national hero who managed to weather the greatest of crises to build Providence, both literally as in the city, and figuratively as in a model society. For many of Balian’s founders, her reign was one where they entered their adulthood and began their professional journey in the empire. Thus, even over generations, there is a special fondness for Empress Anne. Her personal character as a monarch of great contemplation and resolve is one that speaks to the values of Balianese society as well, with her portrait and namesake found all throughout Balianese culture.

She is styled La Rubinissima, or the most exceptional ruby, for her role in maintaining imperial dignity while weathering the great political and military conflicts of her time.

Alren DeNurem: THE TOROBLANCISSIMO

• The 4th Generalissimo of the Holy Orenian Empire, Alren DeNurem is regarded as a military commander and strategist that is unparalleled, and the chief influence of all Balianese military operations. He emerged among the officer corps during the Holy Orenian Empire’s formative war, the Rubern War, and delivered key military reforms to turn the Imperial State Army from a vision into the largest army of its time. In his personal life, Alren was a noted military engineer, pioneering the return of cannons into imperial warfare.

Alren’s penchant for military logistics and drill cannot be understated, building a new cadre of imperial patriots through his command. He remained Oren’s top military mind beyond his victory in the Rubern War, weathering Oren through the controversial Merryweather War and emerging as a forefront leader in the war against the Inferi. Many of the founding members of Balian were proud products of the ISA system that he cultivated, and much of Balian’s logistics and pool of resources come from the institutions he built within the army. Every Balianese commander can only hope to emulate his successes.

• The Church of the Canon owes a great deal to the efforts of St. James, so much so that he is often called the modern St. Daniel. After decades of religious indifference and controversy, the 18th century High Pontiff ushered in a new age of contemporary faith, bringing the Church into harmony with a modernizing empire. His greatest work was the adaptation of the entire Holy Scrolls into the common tongue, completing the work begun by his predecessors some three centuries prior. In doing so, he initiated a resurgence of Canonist literacy which has not yet abated. His renown in Balian is in large part owed to this; he was personal catechist to the ancestor of many Balianese, and every copy of the Holy Scrolls includes both his name and personal commentaries on the translation.

Beyond even these accomplishments, St. James is responsible for the Church’s contemporary character and its relationship with the faithful. His revisions of the canon law resolved key issues of ecclesiastical authority that had plagued humanity in centuries past, establishing a framework for permanent harmony between crown and laurel. He canonized an unprecedented number of saints, and is today responsible for fully 1/6th of saints in the modern calendar. The Pontiff’s contemporaries considered his moral character to be unimpeachable and possibly otherworldly; he had encountered numerous saintly apparitions and called down the physical intercession of the Archangel Michael. At the height of his 49 year reign, St. James' reputation was so great that he commanded even Emperor Peter III himself, bringing an end to the Sutican War and uniting all Canondom in a crusade against the Inferi. 

He is styled as Al Vetraissimo, or the most exceptional glazier, after the humble profession he practiced before entering the priesthood.

Fr Ledicort Vuiller, First Amiratus of Balian: PREMIERISSIMO

• Crippled throughout his life with a severe knee injury and forced to use a walking stick to get around throughout his life, Ledicort was a man with two loves in his life, Politics and Faith. A founding member of the Ducal Chambers, Ledicort spent many years as Magister, having written the basis for Balianese law codexes. However his most notable work came when he was made Seneschal by King John I. The first of his major achievements would come when he met with Sarson Halgrim, leading to a total reformation of the Royal Chambers into the first Duana, Ledicort becoming the first Amiratus of Balian. Alongside Cardinal Teodosio, he also saw to the first Lothar Tablets being translated and the first understandings of both the Balthalite language and culture.

Later on at the heralding of Cloudbreaker’s attack on the city of Atrus, threatening to destroy Balian as a Kingdom, Ledicort was overwhelmingly active with the diplomatic strategy behind the preparations. Spending several months at a time travelling between nations alongside his fellow Duana members, Ledicort forged agreements and relationships amongst all other nations culminating in a large-scale meeting as suggested by Princess Lydia. There the Atrus Covenant was founded, a continent spanning alliance that saw to the death of the Cloudbreaker threat. Some years later Ledicort retired and became a priest, offering mass to the Balianese people before eventually dying of familial heart complications.

Cardinal Teodosio, First Cardinal of Tyria: DEVOTISSIMO

• Arriving in Balian soon after the Coronation of King John I, Teodosio first found himself involved in the Army of Balian, under the tutelage of Captain Peter d’Arkent. However, when he noticed that Balian had a lack of clergymen, he proffered himself forth in order to fill this need. With this in mind he became an acolyte of the church, swiftly finding himself devoted to the faith as a fully fledged Father, conducting masses for the citizenry of Balian. Alongside Father Ledicort Vuiller, he began to translate the old Balthalite language and uncover new Lothar Tablets, using his strength in Flexio to aid this. 

Soon Teodosio became the first Cardinal Tyria, the first Balianese Cardinal for the Canonist faith. Soon he set about noting any religious customs and traditions that were held by the Balianese people in order to better suit his service to their faith, most notably in his missive about Balian Marriage customs. Throughout his life, he ensured that the Balianese diocese grew and kept the Balianese people close with GOD, and for that he received both the Agent of the Clergy role from the Balianese government and became Vice Chancellor of the Curia. He later died of an unknown illness, but his effect on Balianese faith is undeniable.

Elena Novellen, Third Amiratus and Princess Royal: ROSEMOORISSIMA

• By virtue of her birth, Elena Novellen was destined to hold the title of Rosemoor in high regard, a title that spoke to the empowerment of women and their equality both in inheritance and work. In her youth as Princess Royal she aided with Palatial events, namely the Symposia Pragma as she aided in choosing the respective gems of the season. She began working in the Legate’s office, being the clear successor to the  incumbent Legate, her aunt Persephone. Beginning an ongoing Travel Advisory log, Elena held her people’s safety in high regard, ensuring that any change in circumstance was known and that all remained far from harm. Beside her father, she also aided in the creation of new laws and hierarchies for the Balianese.

By her brother’s decree, Elena would later become the first female Amiratus and head of the Balianese Government. A fierce choice for the role, she styled her Duana and station with Rosemoor instead of her familial or married titles, solidifying this monumental appointment. She oversaw the renewal of the Duana as new members came to join up and grant new energy to the executive body of the Kingdom. However this energy was put to the test as war came for the Kingdom, a violent and bloody war that seemed ceaseless unless one side were to collapse. Amongst the various battles and meetings, Elena’s brother, King Adrian died leaving her niece, Queen Sybille, to take over the throne. The Amiratus was the only constant in the war, raising money and commanding in battles such as the famed Hippo’s Gorge, leading her to be looked upon as a hero by all Balianese. Less than a full year after the final peace treaty of the war, Elena passed away at the hands of an unknown assailant, leaving behind a legacy that all young girls of Balian should wish to emulate.

The King of Haense during the Veletz War, King Aleksandr inspired the Balianese people and all others in the Grand Covenant as he showed a strong sense of obligation and leadership to the people he fought beside. He led with honour and aided strongly in the defence of Balian during the battle of Hippo’s Gorge, earning him eternal respect of the Kingdom.

Due to his Balianese heritage, he taught many how to defend against the dark, however his most notable work was being the only known mortal to ever wound the Arch-drakaarAzdromoth.

100 years ago Upon the Mountain of Monterosa, where the star of providence granted to us by Saint Lothar guided us. Under spotted by John the founder, he saw the divine providence that was granted to our wayward people. Those who fled from the tyranny of Frederick arrived here. John Novellen, a second son. But loyal to the people who followed him. And when the time came those who followed him didn’t know what was to come.

Exiles, all they had lost and their families torn apart by civil war. Many could have laid claim upon the leadership of the peoples of the former Empire. But John stood apart, he took the mantle of leadership of these downtrodden and fallen people and led them across the southern wastes to the Monterosa, there he was affirmed, GRAND DUKE by the people for they did not feel worthy to call themselves a Kingdom yet. 

It was then and there, they strove to be better, to be different from their homeland, Orenia, their heritage. Despite being despised by the world, they held pride in where they came from. And it was under their faith that they stayed and they were rewarded.

Twenty years later after their arrival on Monterosa, John was crowned, John I, King of Balian. The peoples of Balian lived in peace. Despite the hatred they faced for being known as ‘Imperials.’ but regardless of what they were called, they stood firm in their belief, Houses of Arkent, Ruthern, Othaman, Darkwood, Rosius, Vuiller, Huntshill-Novellen mostly unbreaking in their vows. True to their faith in John they found a new home.

We as Balianese must always remember these words our Founder said to our wayward people.

“We are now exiles, those of you who joined me are all that's left. We must look upon another and remember that only together will our people survive, long gone are the amenities of Oren. Taken by a Kinslayer, supported by bandits and Blackguards.

I look to you all, as much as you look to me. Because only together will we make our own way in this world. Remember the faults of the past that led us here, the tragedy that drove us from the Heartlands. God in his divine Providence has protected us from all foes, let us thrive where others have failed."

and so it came to pass.

Uncovered Beginnings 

Upon searching the Archives of the Old Amiratuses and Seneschals of Balian, His Royal Excellency Kristoff var Ruthern, Amiratus of Balian, has uncovered the Journals of Father Ledicort Vuiller, the first Amiratus of Balian. While not all of the Journals have been published as they are not deemed relevant for such, these entries may slowly be released when they are deemed such. 

The first of these will be the very first Journal entries made during the very beginning of the Balianese realm, from the very beginning as a camp until the eventual opening of the city of Atrus. It details how the rather quick changes of the people of Balian, their clothing, architecture and cuisine came to be. The hope is that the publishing of these entries shall aid with the understanding of this time, of which very little is understood due to a lack of penmanship as people focused on survival and construction of their new home.

Entry 1 - 12th Harren’s Folley 1867:

The Imperial Diaspora, ousted from their home by the False King of Mardon, have arrived to set up camp in the Southern Continent of Almaris. His Imperial Highness has declared this to be our new home, claiming to be the ‘Grand Duchy of Balian’, named for Saint Lothar of Balian, whom’s constellation has guided our way here. Upon the mountain, his Imperial Highness thrusted his sword into the rock, signifying the foundation of our new home.

I fear we are not prepared for this change in climate, as we find ourselves in days of sweltering heat and unending sunlight, and nights that other nothing but cold embrace and pitch black darkness. Water is a rarity and the soldiers have to hunt local creatures and shoot vultures for our dinner.

Our Petrine dress has no place here, we have to remove most layers for the day and roll up the sleeves of our outfits. The soldiers began a trend of people wrapping cloth around their head, as their Imperial State uniform was not made for such weather. Their dress coats have been cut short, their sleeves rolled up like everyone else and their boots covered in the muck and wear of both the desert and the march from the Northern lands. Most people find their skin burnt, though a local plant seems to make a gel of sorts that cools said wounds.

The camp has been made with several circles, each with a roaring fire to heat each tent around it during the freezing tide of nightfall, allowing fire to relieve the hardships. I myself have taken to the use of a cane made from the bark of a Candelabra tree for my injured legs, which have provided me with naught but trouble in this move. I wished for a horse, but our horses weren’t bred for working in the south, so they have become a commodity that most don’t get. 

It is my hope that we figure out how we are to live in such an aggressive climate that seems to want us to fail at all turns. I have prayed to our Lord that the spirit of the new Balianese people is one of resilience as it seems that if such isn’t the case, we will find ourselves as an anecdote told to adventurers to scare them into proper preparation for any journey to the Southern continent. Our fate is in the hands of the most high God above.

Entry 4 - 27th Harren’s Folley 1867:

On this day a small group of five Imperial State soldiers have returned from a five day scouting trip with news of a friendly tribal realm to our southwest. This news has sparked a sense of hope between the people of the camp who were struggling to find an effective way of life or means of building in this barren land. 

The scouts claim that these people had found a way to not only survive but a means to thrive despite the many adversities of our new home. The soldiers came back fully fed and with rations made with new grains and spices that we haven’t tried before, something that all sought to sneak a taste of. While I watched this scene unfold, I took a soldier aside to speak with his Grace John I of what could be gained from exploring a relationship with this new found group and what they may offer to us.

The soldier spoke of houses made with bright, often white materials, extremely low roofing and glassless windows as well as robed, bright clothing that appeared to be incredibly light and aerated worn by the people. Sadly the soldier had very little to offer on this matter aside from this information, but I took this as a sign of God answering my nightly prayers for aid. As such, I requested a small detail of soldiers and two scholars to aid with my documentation, together we would document what ensured this small civilisation could run so perfectly and formulate a way to utilise this information to build our own Nation.

Despite concerns over using resources for this and giving up some horses for this expedition, the Grand Duke did agree to our plan. Alongside the selected soldiers, led by Viktor Darkwood and my two scholars, I shall embark unto this land in five days time, more than enough to plan and prepare for this undertaking properly. My prayers have changed now, I now pray for our safe passage to this land and that those who remain are protected from any harm.

Entry 7 - 11th Sigismund’s End 1867:

I have been in the land I have come to know as Qaraal for seven days. We were fortunate enough to have a scholar who spoke Qalaashi enough to translate the Qaraali dialect into our own with relative ease. The natives of these lands are surprisingly welcoming to those who would be considered to be imposing or encroaching upon their own lands. They fed us, homed us and gave us clothing more suited to the weather.

Their clothing is, as we were told, more robe-like, their fabrics seemingly having been fashioned out of far lighter materials than we have currently and with such bright and unseen dyes. In truth I’m shocked by how much of a difference this has made, the feeling of every day being a struggle has subsided to welcome in a chance for us to find every day an easier one where work is easier to complete within a reasonable timeframe.

Their architecture is very interesting, much more cuboid with huge hallways that seemed to tunnel any draft into the house, cooling down those in it. The colours are again bright and beautiful, much like the ones in the outfits we were given, it creates a much more vibrant and luscious atmosphere to the one that could be seen in the Orenian Capital of New Providence. They’ve cultivated small plots of land that are looked after by large groups of people, who spend their days ensuring that these patches of land grow harvests that people are able to live off.

The food they grow and serve are unlike that in the Northern continent nations, seemingly plants that are more able to wear the arid heat and animals whom seem to have adapted quite well to the climate. They both eat and live very well, something that we ourselves are most definitely struggling with at our camp, however I believe what I have learnt here shall provide our new Grand Duchy with becoming a blossoming nation of progress. There is a lot I shall suggest to His Grace, but I shall surmise it.

I shall suggest we build white houses with small amounts of colour to express individuality, low roofing or even tower-like flat roofs. Large halls and no glass in the windows to allow drafts to enter the house and cool down those inside. In addition, larger buildings should have domes as the Qaraali claim that not only does it aid in cooling but also maintaining warmth in the cold nights. I shall also suggest we turn the lighter sheets and cloths we have into makeshift robes, in order to make this fitting for our home, we should ensure the Splendor of Empire continues in both clothing and architecture. Finally, I wish to introduce a weekly draft of people to aid with overseeing new cultivated parts of land to ensure we have a reasonable amount of food. I pray his Grace sees wisdom in this and it is able to ensure we are able to survive the coming months.

Entry 12 - 22th Sigismund’s End 1867:

Our entourage returned from our trip three days ago, and I was able to meet with his Grace last eve with both my findings and suggestions. We spoke for quite some hours, looking at architectural plans and drawing up some changes from what had already been planned. Material requisitions have been made for our houses to be made more similarly to what we saw in Qaraal and we have prepared to build the way we should. We have planned new plots of farms with the seeds that were graciously given to us by our new friends of Qaraal so that we can eat in a substantial manner.

We have agreed that the leadership and any willing Peers will be the first to wear these new robes, and they shall be provided with the most beautiful and ornate outfits. We plan to do this with the belief that those who are in our Nation shall swiftly follow this as though it was one of the many Orenian Social Season trends that came to pass many times over. Should this not come to pass, we shall send out a missive explaining the benefits of our new style of clothing and why people should take this up.

I haven’t much else to explain on this matter, the meeting went well and it seems the Crown has been very open to my suggestions. Construction shall begin in the next week and we shall see our diaspora finally become an actual nation as we have planned for quite some time now. We have spent over a month in camp, I imagine more shall come before we are completed, I merely pray that this time shall come sooner rather than later. 

Entry 46 - 19th Godfrey’s Triumph 1 B.A:

On this day our city, Atrus, has been completed, our Cathedral built around the very sword and helm that Grand Duke John placed in the ground. We worked together alongside the Qaraali who offered their aid with the simple request of continued friendship between our lands. I now sit at a bench, writing this, bright white cuboid houses around me with rings of colour to the top of their walls. We have plants around us, identified to be adapted specifically for the weather we experience. I sit beside a fountain, created using the irrigation system that the Qaraali seem to have created, or at least benefit from strongly as we soon shall.

The people of Balian now almost unilaterally dress in robed clothing with bright clothing with the most ornate, beautiful detailing. New hairstyles have also seemingly become a trend, those with longer hair using pins and ties to hold their hair up and away from their face, whereas those with shorter hair keep it up. While everyone seems to appear very different to how they did prior to our diaspora, during our times in the Petrine area, I believe it is easy enough to see the influences. There’s the splendour, the unique House influences and most importantly, the same attention to detail, every part of an outfit meaning something to the person wearing it.

Some will argue Balian is a continuation of the Imperial way, some will argue it to be a death of the Imperial way. Both are correct and incorrect concurrently. The truth is that it is an evolution from such to fit our new home in a completely different climate and land. We have changed to befit what we need, so that we may survive and do well in our new home. We shall always honour our roots, that is a given as all should honour and respect their ancestors, such is what we are taught by the scrolls. God shall guide our path as he deems fit, I only pray that the path he sets forth for us, shall ensure our people thrive in the ever-changing landscape, both political and physical. God has brought us to where we are, he has his reasoning for such and we shall fulfil his plans.

THE FIFTH AND EIGHT TABLETS

Splendor & War

ABSTRACT

The Lothar Stones are marble engravings regarding life in the Bathalite Empire, otherwise known as Old Balian, dated somewhere between the fifth to seventh century. They are attributed to St. Lothar the Bannerlord, the final dynast of that ancient civilization. At least twelve of these stones are believed to be in existence, with each depicting the perspectives of Lothar and his countrymen on various topics. They are written in Old Balthalite, a script similar to non-Dragaari Flexio.

The tablets presented herein were discovered as a pair in an antiquity shop. They were purchased and translated by Caspian of Rhen, the Lesser, who now presents them to the Balianese people as a gift to mark the accession of their king, Alexander II.

SYNOPSIS

The Fifth Tablet, Splendor, describes the capital of the Balthalite Empire in the time of St. Lothar's grandfather, Emperor Lugo II. The period depicted is the zenith of the empire's wealth and dominion. It is written as an epitaph to the author's father, and the son of Lugo II, who was Bero IV. Like all tablets in the series, it freely addresses events both contemporary to St. Lothar and before his birth. In particular, Splendor seems to be an explanation of why St. Lothar continued to honor his ancestors despite rejecting their failures.

The Eighth Tablet, War, chronicles the transformation of the Balthalite Empire, first from a liberating force (at the time of its founding by the mythical Balthier) into an imperial hegemony under the later emperors, and at last, its overthrow by St. Lothar. In it, the author admits guilt for his participation in the empire's conquests, and attempts to provide justification for his eventual rebellion against his father.

The Novellen name is a Heartlander familial name that is rife with success, failure and controversy, a name known throughout the varied realms of Aevos and those that have preceded them. It is a name that evokes feelings of patriotism, nostalgia and strength as well as hatred, fury and disappointment. A family descended from the Horenic line, formed by the unity of Helane and Sarkozy that has persisted for centuries as rulers of varied nations.

In the modern era of Aevos, Novellen can be found in a few places, Novellen d’Atrus being the ruling family of the Balianese people and the Senior line of the Novellen family. Formed from the line of John Casimir, the Uncle of Peter ‘The Bald’, last Emperor of the Holy Orenian Empire, John created his line and the Grand Duchy, Later Kingdom, of Balian in the refuge of the southern desert continent of Almaris. As a century of the Novellen d’Atrus rule of Balian approaches, the Crown has decided that it is a necessity for the people of the nation to understand the family that presides over them. 

In this documentation we will explore the various aspects of the Novellen d’Atrus line, from the history since the Novellen founding and cultural influences to values and traditions.

History

Origins

The Novellen family tapestry has been woven over centuries of history. It begins with Anne Augusta Helane, born in 1735 in the Orenian Capital of New Helena, and heir to the House of Helane through her father, and Cascadia through her mother. The Empire faced a crisis, with no clear heir Adrian Sarkozy was named Lord Protector. Anne was betrothed to Joseph de Sarkozy the son of Adrian de Sarkozy. Adrian plotted to see his son take the throne, but Adrian’s untimely death and the coronation of Anne’s father Peter III, as Holy Orenian Emperor seemingly ended the Lord Protector’s plot for a Sarkozy Empire. 

Anne was placed as the de facto heir to the Empire, with her father having no trueborn sons. Despite her status, she was never proclaimed Crown Princess, using the title Princess Imperial. Anne’s betrothal to Joseph de Sarkozy was upheld, and they would be wed in 1753. Following their marriage the two would unite House Helane and House Sarkozy to form the Imperial House of Novellen, named after the Imperial Palace of Helena. 

Ruling an Empire

 
Following her father’s death in 1784, Anne ascended to the throne and was crowned Empress Anne I, the first empress-regnant in history. Anne’s husband was crowned beside her as Emperor Joseph II and they would rule together, leading the Empire into a new age.

Anne and Joseph would preside over the Edict of Separation in 1786, which allowed Haenseni Independence from the Empire. They also faced the great Inferi invasion, where Anne I fought on the frontlines against the demonic horde. She refused the safety of behind the lines, seeing her duty to only Oren and not herself. The Inferi would be defeated, but not without the final siege destroying the Imperial capital of Helena, and Anne being trapped within the crumbling ruins until her son Peter Maximilian saved the Empress's life.

After the destruction of Arcas, Anne and Joseph would lead Oren to a new continent, Almaris in 1796. After overseeing the construction of the new Imperial Capital, Providence Anne would retire from the public soon after and pass away from Breast Cancer in 1800. Emperor Joseph II was left to rule alone for fourteen years. 

During Joseph’s reign, Oren faced the Sedan revolt in 1811. The House of de Joannes revolted against the crown after Emperor Joseph issued a proclamation stripping them of lands and titles and accusing them of multiple criminal offences, including sedition and treachery against the Crown. The rebellion was short-lived, after two Imperial victories on the field, and the Imperial State Army closing in House de Joannes abandoned their lands and fled, ending the conflict in 1813.

Emperor Joseph II would die a year following the revolt, succeed by his son John VIII. Inheritng the throne at the age of  57, with no legitimate children he named his brother Philip his heir with the Edict of Renzfeld. His reign was marked by conflict. Revolutionary groups sprung up throughout the Empre, among them the  Mercatorii Revolutionary Army (MRA) and , Revolutionary Armed Forces (RAF). They achieved limit success in burning fire bombing attacks and rallies, but following a mass arrest by the Imperial State Army they were sent underground. Just four years following John VIII’s coronation conflicted broke out with the Kingdom of Norland. King Sven II of Norland declared war against Oren. The Tenth Nordling war would last five years, and despite some early Norland victories in the first year of the conflict, the Imperial forces would turn the tide, winning a string of victories. Building up to the Battle of Outer Arentania. An imperial host numbering nearly ten thousand surrounded and crushed the invading four thousand norlandic warriors. The war ended soon after with an Imperial victory in 1823.
 

John VIII would pass away in 1837 and as per the Edict of Renzfeld, his brother would ascend to the throne as Philip II. Philip’s reign was marked by the growing tensions with the Grand Kingdom of Urguan and after a series of escalations the two nations would declare war upon one another. Phlip’s reign over this war would be short lived as his grandson, Philip Amadeus would return to Oren and lead the Aster Revolution in 1849, enacting a successful coup of Philip II. Philip II’s death would be unknown, though many suspect that his personal guards dumped the man in his wheelchair into the canals of New Providence. 

The War of the Wigs

Philip III and his wife Anastasia would quickly resume the War with Urguan, but it soon expanded as Norland, Haense and several anti-oren forces amassed in a Tripartite alliance against the Empire. The war lasted for nineteen years, with back and forth fighting laying waste to the heartlands. An initial victory by the Tripartite while invading and occupying the town of Southbridge and surrounding land was pushed back and southbridge retaken after a six year long campaign. The war would drag on for another seven years, leaving the exhausted Empire on the brink of ruin. Having weathered two excommuncations by the Church, and pushed back the Tripartite invasion Emperor Philip III would lead a devastating offensive campaign, becoming known as Philip’s Folly, where a nearly twelve thousand strong Imperial army was surrounded and wiped out nearly to a man. Following the defeat Emperor Philip III gave into the Tripartite’s demands, seceding lands to Urugan and Haense and paying heavy reparations the Empire was on the verge of collapse.

Brothers' War

Philip III, his wife Anastasia would fall prey to a fatal illness the same year the treaty was signed. The immediate power vacuum would spark civil war between the eldest son of Philip III, Peter Augustus and his younger brother Frederick Charles. Those who fought for Peter sought the Imperial tradition continued while those who fought for Frederick were Royalists, seeking to reform the Empire into a new Kingdom of Oren. The war was one of betrayal and backstabbing, families turning against themselves. Lasting around a year, the Imperialists would be driven out of the capital city and into the hinterlands. Peter August on the Sun's Smile of 1868 was captured at the Duchy of Reutov, and despite his uncle Prince John Casimir leading the Imperial forces against the capitol to free his nephew they would be soundly defeated at the  Battle for New Providence. Peter August alongside his wife pregnant consort were executed in the throne room.

Founding of Balian

After the conclusion of the Brother’s War, Prince John Casimir, a distinguished commander and uncle to Peter ‘The Bald’ and Frederick 'Fraticida,’ embarked on a journey with the Imperial diaspora to the southern continent of Almaris. Upon a lofty mountain, under the guidance of the St Lothar constellation, John ceremoniously embedded his sword into the rock and placed his helmet down, proclaiming the birth of The Grand Duchy of Balian, named in honour of the celestial guide. Leading a devoted council, John dedicated two decades to the establishment of this new nation, fostering robust diplomatic relations and crafting a resilient governmental framework that would endure the test of time. During this period, Balian faced challenges, including a collaborative war with Urguan and Haense against the orc threat and the Kingdom of Oren. After years of steadfast effort, Balian ascended to the status of a Kingdom, and John assumed the title of King John I, bestowed by Pontiff Pontian IV. In the concluding decade of his reign, King John I earnestly pursued peace with the emerging Kingdom of Aaun, alongside Haense and Petra. Simultaneously, he diligently settled his peers on the expanded lands of Balian. As his final years unfolded, King John I peacefully succumbed to illness, leaving behind a legacy of high esteem among his family, citizens, and allies.

Novellen d’Atrus

Upon the demise of King John ‘The Founder,’ his successor, Alexandros, ascended to the throne as King Alexander I. Alexander, a visionary leader, initiated diplomatic engagements with Ba’as, laying the foundation for the Rhenyari influence that would shape Balianese culture. He embarked on a transformative journey, overseeing the restructuring of the government in collaboration with his trusted Amiratus and Sarson al Granpaloma, resulting in the establishment of the Balianese Duana. However, Alexander’s reign faced a looming shadow with the emergence of an undead threat. Informed of the impending danger posed by the undead dragon Cloudbreaker and its accompanying horde, Balian seized the opportunity of preceding years to prepare for the imminent assault on the capital, Atrus. This involved mass production of essential weaponry, recruitment of formidable 'superweapons,' and an impressive display of diplomatic prowess. Guided by Alexander I and Ledicort Vuiller, Balian took a proactive stance by forming the Atrus Covenant—an alliance uniting all nations of Almaris against the forces of Iblees. The ensuing battle was prolonged and arduous, culminating in victory but at the cost of Atrus's destruction. Following reconstruction, Balian resumed its proactive efforts, collaborating with Haense and Aaun in the creation of the Canonist League to quell rebellious Adrians. In the twilight of King Alexander's rule, just moments before the birth of his granddaughter, he solidified the Sol Entente pact with the emerging southern nations of Aevos—a testament to his commitment to regional stability and cooperation.
 

King Adrian would swiftly ascend to his throne after his father’s passing, enjoying a peace among Almaris that lasted but a few years. Soon into his reign, the Mori’Quessir would begin their attacks upon the varied nations of the continent, quickly making it apparent that they wished to take over the continent in full. Atrus would fall under a sandstorm that kept people in their homes, only for a flesh worm to force them out, leading to the city to be abandoned as the Balianese joined the rest of Almaris in the ruins of Savoy. Once Savoy was besieged by the Mori’Quessir en masse, the descendants left for the new continent of Aevos. With the new city of Portoregne built, King Adrian would engage in peace talks, finally finding an understanding between the Canonist League and Adria. Several reforms would be made in Balian, the founding of the City Commune by the King and Amiratus Gaius var Ruthern as well as the founding of the Armada by Fleet Admiral Dante. King Adrian’s first born, Princess of Monterosa Johanna Casimira, was an adventurous youth, however such would only spell tragedy for the girl. Upon a misguided adventure, she would not return, only to be found dead in the wreckage of her boat. Prince Alexandros would be made heir to the nation, though he’d eventually step down for his twin Princess Sibyl. Over a decade later, married and heavily pregnant with her own heir, Sibyl would be kidnapped by a group of the Ferrymen bandit, though she would be released in time, the attack by the Veletzians would not go unnoticed. About a year later, after further attacks, Balian would be a founding member of the Covenant of five (later eight) who declared war upon Veletz. The major battles would all be landslides, King Adrian quickly able to declare decisive victories for his Kingdom.

Queen Sybille would take over in the middle of the war against Veletz, immediately setting to work continuing Balian’s continuous war machine, ensuring the surplus and training did not end. She would be crowned soon after her father’s burial so as to not waste time. Though she has not been Queen long, she has already worked to reform the nation’s nobility in a rather innovative way. The war raged on for quite some time including a failed invasion of Balian, known later as ‘The Battle of Hippose’s Gorge’. The Covenant wiped out the Stassion pretenders and pushed into Veletz, the pressure being such that Sir Gaspard fled his own nation, leading to Markus Sarkozic reforming Veletz into the Duchy of Adria and surrendering his forces. Almost five years later, muddied by a failed Rebellion, the Covenant would burn Winburgh, the capital of Veletz down, signifying the final victory. However fire soon became a double edged sword for Sybille, as soon after peace was assured the dragonkin assaulted the Balianese Cathedral. Trapped behind the bars of the gates, she watched as three dragonkin fought the Prince Consort Ezren of Tuvia, killing him in cold blood. Such a murder ignited a passion in the widowed Queen, who swore vengeance upon the Dragonkin menace. Soon after, the centennial celebrations of Balian would begin, of which took an entire year of festivities, including a grandiose ball and feasts. The biggest accomplishment came after as Sybille, alongside her allies in Haense, Petra and Aaun founded the Covenant of Man, a permanent Pan-Human alliance which has ensured the diplomatic integrity of Balian.

Traditions

The Novellen d’Atrus have several traditions both formed by the older Petrine-imperial heritage and influenced their new Balianese and Rhenyari influences. These come in varied forms such as naming conventions and major ceremonies.

Since the arrival of King John I in the Southern continent of Almaris, the name Casimir and Casimira have been considered both important and integral to the ruling family. The convention of giving the firstborn male and female the middle name Casimir and Casimira has become tradition, which often ends with the heir having the name Casimir and the Princess Royal having the name Casimira. This has always been done as a tribute to King John I.

Starting with the Coronation of John I, the founder of the nation, Balian holds a unique and elaborate coronation system that factors in several aspects of both ancient mythos and canon script. Adapted from the Imperial rite used by John VIII and his descendants, the official service often lasts several hours and culminates in the Monarch’s first addresses and Royal court. It is a momentous occasion that is meant to alleviate the people of Balian and bring a sense of patriotic justice. 

Upon the announcement of the prior Princess Sibyl Gwyneth as the new heir to the throne, a new tradition was created to make Sibyl the official heir to the throne despite her not being first in line. The Monterosan Investiture was invented by a renowned scholar of the Royal Balianese Academy Caspian of Rhen, who also did the coronation, and it includes the participation of the Balianese public including three attestors who will publicly profess that the heir is worthy of such a role in the Kingdom. This is done alongside a church rite to make the heir official in both the eyes of Balian and the Mother Church. 

The Novellen Household are considered a very scholarly and intellectual house, often engaging in lengthy and tense debates with their peers. Often such debates and discussions are had during a meal and a drink, such an event is often known as a ‘Symposium’ and is primarily for the adults of a scholarly reputation. While this is primarily for adults, the children are often enlisted in various classes, be it historical, scientific or religious in nature, they learn from a young age so that they can grow to be scholars in their own right.

Values

All families hold values close to their hearts and despite the difficulties of its history, Novellen d’Atrus is not different in this matter. The house has three tenants that they believe in, loyalty, piety and justice, of which have been major factors in their leadership of the Balianese people. 

Loyalty is a primary value for the Royal Family of Balian and for good reason. With Balian being a nation born of betrayal from someone as close as a brother alongside a citizenry of family members betraying one another, the Novellen d’Atrus house have made it a priority to assure loyalties are kept. Whether it be loyalty to friends, allies or their own citizenry, the loyalty will be held in the highest possible regard to ensure no betrayal so destructive as the Brother’s War was, could be repeated. Any betrayal of this trust and loyalty is met with swift reproach.

The Balianese are a pious people, holding true to the word of the scrolls with their lives. It was in the darkest hour that King John I opted to put his faith in the scrolls and GOD by following the light of Saint Lothar’s Star to the Red Mountain that became the capital city of Atrus. Since the fateful miracle given by GOD, the Novellen d’Atrus have always ensured their devotion to him to be a primary focus of their lives, acting with piety at every possible turn. 

The second King of Balian, Alexander I was given the epithet ‘Just’ by his late friend and first Amiratus, Father Ledicort Vuiller. The choice was made due to Alexander’s predilection for mercy, sparing the young Baron of Acre and his mother after their failed assassination attempt on Baron Lucius Galbraith and later sparing the Viscountess of Renduzzo for her hiring of mercenaries who accosted the Princess Royal. King Adrian I was also a man who sought justice in all he did, such as the war against Veletz after they kidnapped his pregnant heir. All heads of the Novellen d’Atrus house are expected to lead their house and people with a similar just attitude.

Cultural Influences

Since arrival in the southern Almaris deserts, the Novellen d’Atrus family has undergone quite the change in their culture from three major sources of influence. Whether it be from an arranged marriage from a distant land, the discovery of an ancient civilisation or their Imperial heritage, the family has developed in a manner quite different from their imperial predecessors. 

The original and primary influence upon the Novellen house was the Petrine Orenian of which originated from Peter III. According to Napier scholars, Peter III and the Petrine culture introduced nationalist pride, a sense of scholarly duty and unity. The scholarly nature of the petrine forebearers influenced the Novellen d’Atrus love of scholarship, be it for history, literature, art of music, the d’Atrus branch endeavour to learn more of their surroundings. In addition, a lot of the splendour of the Imperial family has been mirrored in what the Royal Family now displays from day to day.

With the aid of Sir Sarson al Granpaloma of Ba’as in the leadership of Balian and the eventual marriage of Adrian I and Andromeda of Ba’as, the Rhenyari culture had a large effect upon the people of Balian, first and foremost the Royal Family. Andromeda, upon the building of Portoregne had a large part to play in the design of Palace, resulting in a clear Rhenyari influence on the building. Despite the eventual betrayal and departure of Andromeda, all her children with King Adrian were of Rhenyari descent, something they held faith in, more often dressed in clothing befitting this aspect of heritage and their older Balianese heritage. 

The Lothar Stones, found throughout Almaris and the Ba’as continent, have given the scholars of Balian an introspective into the lives of the people in the Ancient Balthalite Empire. Led by Cardinal Teodosio, Father Ledicort and Princess Royal Elena, these tablets unveiled many things including the leaders of Emperor Balthier and his consort Empress Sybille. The language and naming conventions informed much of the Balianese language and more importantly the names of the Royal family. In addition, the first Lothar Stone informed the Balianese people of various religious traditions which have influenced the religious and traditions of the Novellen d’Atrus household.

Artefacts

Cloudbreaker’s Fang-

A blade forged from the bones of the undead dragon Cloudbreaker by an unknown dwarf, the longsword has been wielded by King Alexander I and his successors. It is held as a symbol of Balian’s strength and resilience against those which seek to destroy it. 

The Throne of Unity-

A throne placed within the maw of the undead dragon Cloudbreaker’s skull, it is an ode to what the denizens of a continent can do when united in a common goal. It is the throne that all reigning monarchs of Balian shall sit upon as their birthright. During the war against the Veletz menace, the throne was vandalised, being repaired by Alexandros Casimir who used molten gold to signify its prior damage.

The Crown of Balian-

A crown of pure aurum, with various inlaid gems, from both the local Balianese deserts of Almaris and the Holy Orenian Empire. Made by the first Royal Smith of Balian, Count Drako Darkwood and his friend Vicereine Laurelie de Pelear, it was a coronation gift to King John I. 

The Crown of Monterosa-

A crown of pure aurum, engraved with the skyline of the first Balianese capital of Atrus, created specifically for the investiture of the then Crown Princess Sibyl. It is passed down to every heir of the nation upon their own investitures and serves as a reminder of where Balian began.

The History of The Kingdom of Balian

The Following is an essay recapping the histories of the Kingdom of Balian up to the year of 73 B.A by Princess Sibyl Gwyneth as part of her ongoing studies.

The nation of Balian is one of an extremely storied history, emerging from strife and building itself into a renewed Grand Duchy, only to become a Kingdom in time and grow to a geopolitical force to be reckoned with. Having only existed and steadily grown for little over seven decades, one would be mistaken for thinking Balian has few tales to tell but this is far from the truth, having experienced wars, attacks by an undead dragon and the ending of a continent as well as much development.  

To start a story of a nation with its founding would be foolish, as truthfully that is not when the nation begins. Balian finds its origins from the Brother’s War of the Holy Orenian Emperor. Two opposing sides between the loyalist side of Peter ‘the Bald’ the firstborn of Phillip III ‘Patricidia’ and the rebelling side of Frederick ‘Fratricidia’. The war was a bloody and violent one, friends turning on one another and families falling into discourse over who was the true heir. After several fights, the two sides came face to face at the gates of New Providence, clashing blades as many lives were lost in the battle. As it came to a close, it would be obvious that the loyalist had lost, and as such the Prince of Oren and Uncle to Peter ‘the Bald’, John Casimir took the lead of the displaced people, and decided to head to the southern continent of Almaris. 

Following the fabled constellation of Saint Lothar, the resilient Prince had across a red mountain within the later-titled Lotharene Desert, it was upon this mountain where the diaspora would find a new home. As he stood below the star of Saint Lother, he would place down his armour and plant his sword into the rock atop the mountain, declaring the land, the Grand Duchy of Balian. Building both a new city, known as Atrus, and his chambers of his founding members. The first chambers consisted of Leopold Alstion. Jarad Munnel, Peter d’Arkent, Ledicort Vuiller, Viktor Darkwood and Constantine Malenos, these people would, along with Prince John, be known as the founding fathers of Balian. Forming the new realm as a Grand Duchy, the former Prince would become known as Grand Duke John I. 

The formation of the realm would go rather well, sustaining a strong beginning for the nation, finding close allies with the nation of Norland and other members of the south, as the leaders brokered peace within the aggressions of the south before forming the Pact of the Southern Winds. These pacts would soon come in handy as the nation was assaulted by the Naasifah Confederacy. A force of people considered native to the southern lands, the Confederacy viewed the upstart nation as threats to their own lands. With their allies in Norland and Hyspia, the Grand Duchy would combat their adversaries on their several attacks of both Balian and Norland. While no counter-assaults were ever made, the defence of the Grand Duchy had essentially destroyed the confidence of Confederacy’s army leading to them leaving the surrounding area, to find a new home elsewhere. Once more the Grand Duchy would be at peace.

As the nation further improved their diplomatic relationships, Grand Duke John and his new Seneschal Rev Vuiller would set about assuring that Balian was improving in all forms of possible, creating new jobs, areas and raising the standard of living for all within the nation. With this came the eventual ability to expand the nation’s borders as expeditions were made to take land for the nation, on which the Viscounty of Darkwood would become the first nobles to settle, creating a large fort that would later become very important. With the expansion, the canonist church finally recognised the efforts of the nation and opted to offer coronation to the Grand Duke, allowing him to become King John I of the Kingdom of Balian. With this, the varied detractors of the nation would be silenced as it had finally proven that it was worthy of such a high rank.

While Balian ascended to the status of Kingdom, their allies began to experience tensions with the Orcish nation of Krugmar. After several escalations, and the expression of wishing to launch a war, Urguan and Haense would invite Balian to join the Tripartite Accord. Together the Tripartite would put pressure on the orcs, until the Kingdom of Oren would eventually involve themselves in the conflict. A constant opposing force since the end of the Brother’s War, the Balianese saw this as an opportunity to finally enact vengeance against the nation. However, Oren would quickly back out of the war, causing the Tripartite to win, as Oren fell into open rebellion as it was overthrown to become the Harvest Confederacy, the Balianese succeeding past those who had taken their home from them. 

During the next following years of the Kingdom, Balian would manage to situate many of its peers, with their own lands, where they would craft villas, castles and in some cases small villages for their family. This expansion ushered in a new for the nation as Rev Vuiller would die, leaving his son Ledicort Vuiller to become the new Seneschal of Balian. He would immediately bring about structural reform in the abandoning of tax exemption statuses, rewriting of his old legal code, definition of peerages and separation of executive and legislative bodies of the nation. However soon after these changes, the Acreans of the Harvest confederacy would launch a raid in order to kill Baron of Castelorena, Lucius Galbraith. With the calling of various allied nations, the Seneschal and Crown Prince would see to it that the perpetrators were either slayed or captured. Judging that the leaders should be spared to undergo less swift punishment rather than death, Alexander would begin a long history of being just. Soon after this had occurred, Balian would join Haense and a few other nations as they judged that Petra would secede and a new leader would be elected for the confederacy, which would lead to formation of Aaun and the new Alstion dynasty. 

Soon finding a strong alliance with the new Archduchy of Petra, King John would have his son Constantine marry the Archduchess to enshrine the nation’s bond. As Balian gained alliance with not only the new Petran realm, they would also find themselves in a strong alliance with the Haelun’orians who had also opted to move south as the Balianese had previously done. The growing hegemony and strong alliance with the southern nations had birthed a new title for Balian, soon being considered ‘The Protector of the South’. This title would soon come to be tested as the goblin nation of Un’Satum also formed within the south, a nation that quickly became hostile to the strong human nation. Trying to convince the Kingdom’s allies to turn against them with little luck, the goblins would quickly set about raiding the Kingdom infrequently. However while this continued through the years, little came of it, Un’Satum soon disappearing into obscurity. 

As Balian grew to a point where all their peers were settled and their diplomacy, lands and even capital had expanded substantially. The nation had began to flourish within the desolate lands of the south, strongly holding onto its titles. However, as it had managed to maintain its own peace, it would soon become apparent that such was not happening within the north, amongst their fellow human nations. Haense and especially Petra had begun to experience turbulence with their Aaunic neighbours, and war seemed as though it was upon the horizon. There would be few and far between encounters between the sides that had formed, but the Balianese would find themselves involved within the conflict. At a meeting that would ultimately resolve the conflict, the nations would air out their grievances and come to mutual understandings that allowed for them to be at peace once more. 

Thirty three years after he had found the nation, King John I ‘The Founder’ fell bedridden, and despite his best efforts to govern his nation with his chambers in this time, the man would soon succumb to his illness and die, leaving a legacy of persistence and strength. Within very little time, his son King Alexander I would be crowned and placed upon the throne of Balian, to the applause of his still mourning populace. Alexander and his wife Yelena would soon work quickly to revitalise both the nation’s governance and courts, leading to a big uptake in the varied aspects of the Kingdom’s jobs. Within little to no time, Alexander had established that he was a capable leader, working with his chamber to expand their diplomacy, borders and most importantly their culture.

Some years after taking his throne, and as his son and heir, Hadrian came to be older, Alexander would receive a letter from the throne of Ba’as. Using a member of their governance, Sarson Halgrim, the envoy of Ba’as would meet with Ledicort Vuiller. While the meeting was not long at all, it was most definitely productive, prompting three major results: the promise of Hadrian to marry Princess Andromeda of Ba’as, a Lothar tablet for translation and aid in reforming the nation’s chambers. The result of the latter was the reformation of the executive into the Duana, with the Seneschal now taking the title of Amiratus as the leader. This change allowed the Duana to be far more transparent and efficient than it was before, and marked the first of several Rhenyari influences upon the nation's development.

While the nation's new developments seem to improve many aspects of the nation, it was something that was soon followed by a great sense of doom looming over the flourishing nation. Soon, via a benevolent Bronze Elf named Luthriel, the information of an undead necrotic dragon named Cloudbreaker, who was headed with hordes of undead to the city of Atrus in an attempt to destroy it. Wasting no time upon learning this information, Ledicort would have already amassed alchemical weapons before returning to Balian to inform the King and Duana. Thus, the King, Ledicort and Legate Princess Persephone Maxima would set about attempting to rally Almaris to aid their defence, spending hours upon hours in such discussion. The walls grew, the armoury gained weapons that would be considered both rare and impressive from the Kervallen alchemists and the varied realms would pledge their aid. With both a Paladin and Druidic superweapon now placed in their lands and Almaris united in a singular goal, a meeting would be held amongst the world leaders to discuss the upcoming battle, organised by Princess Lydia Antheia and Ledicort Vuiller. Such designated varied armies in different places of the city for defence, and most importantly created the Atrus Covenant. This was a pact that placed almost all nations within a pact that would ensure descendant-kind would fight Ibleesian forces. Balian had now prepared a strong defence, and just in time, as it would now be tested.

Darkness soon came over Atrus as the continent prepared for the oncoming siege. Reports of several armies of undead within the region began to prop up as weapons were loaded and barricades were reinforced. The well over hundred and fifty thousand man force split up into four groups. Three equal sized forces were made, one to defend the front gate, one the back wall and another to fight the incursion at the canyon while a smaller fourth group would take to adventuring to a phylactory rumoured to be in Petran lands, that should kill the dragon once destroyed. As the battle commenced, the arablests would fire upon the dragon, taking it down several times, only for it to once more revive. The defenders upon the wall fought bloody battles, ultimately coming down from the wall to engage in melee combat against the dragon as the canyon warriors were successful in their combatting of their enemies. However, as Koko Mama, the druidic tree and the paladin’s sunbreak failed to defeat the necrotic horror, cloudbreaker would soon unleash torrents of horrific fire upon the city, destroying everything in its path. As the defenders ventured underground to escape, a miracle would occur, the adventurers had found success, ending the dragon’s life as it fell down outside the city. While they sought to confirm the kill, the descendants would find themselves faced with a horrendous worm, who would soon disappear, burying itself as an omen for what was to come. 

Remaining in the confines of Castel Renduzzo, the Darkwood fort, as the new city was built, the Balianese would by no means struggle to retain their persistence. All too familiar with the struggles of the world, the nation would rebuild their city, bright and more beautiful than it had been beforehand. However, as seemed to remain a permanent fact, this peace would not last long as a rebellion within their strong Aaunic ally’s  land would demand the interest of the Crown. Swiftly offering aid to their allies, the Balianese would soon come to form the Canonist League with the Kingdoms Haense and Aaun and later Petra due to the evidence of draconic taint within the rebellious Adria. For King Alexander, there was truly only one goal, the dream of Pax Humanis, the ideal that humanity could be united in the maintenance of peace. Seeing the Canonist League as a step towards this ultimate goal, Alexander would become the most outspoken advocate for the organisation as the Adrians seceded and the war became more of a slow burner. 

The aforementioned Lothar Tablets soon became of more importance as the nation sent expeditionary forces to the Pirate controlled area known only as ‘Old Balian’. The Company led forces would uncover more of the tablets akin to the one given by Sarson and another under Atrus, which would be given to the academic force of Cardinal Teodosio Tyria, Princess Royal Elena Casimira and Amiratus Ledicort Vuiller. The combined effort would lead to the discovery of the Old Balthalite Imperial Culture, the predecessor of both Ba’as and the Kingdom of Balian, such would be used to influence the further development of Balianese culture as it is known today. During this period of development, the Princess Royal would find herself victim to accosting by the security of the Prideful Countess of Darkwood, leading to a dilemma for the King. While many would have found themselves eager to enact harsh punishment for such treatment of their children, the King once more proved his just attitude by merely enacting a demotion.

In addition to the Canonist, along with his new Amiratus Gaius var Ruthern, Alexander would form the Sol Entente, a new pact with Krugmar, Haelun’or and Amathine, as well as Nor’Asath later, to expand the friendships of the nation. The reign of Alexander would soon come to an end a few years after Gaius took the role of Amiratus and worked with Magister Robyn de Lyons to create a new set of laws. King Alexander I ‘the Just’ mere hours after the birth of his first grandchild, his grand heir Crown Princess Johanna, would pass of illness in his bedchamber within the Palatio Monterosa. Opting to take the Regal name Adrian, the new King would, just as his father had, establish his strength quickly through varied edicts. Unlike many canonist princes, both contemporary and of old, Adrian found himself as an accomplished alchemist, capable of crafting impressive items from such a practice. This is something he would come to be known for, using it both to aid the people of his Kingdom and also as gifts to those he viewed as having contributed much to the nation and deserving of such gifts. 

King Adrian’s reign, much as his predecessors, would come under stress as the Mori’Quessir would begin to plague the lands of Almaris. A force to be reckoned with, the Mori had garnered an army stronger than anything Almaris could have foreseen, as they slowly but surely took down all the realms of the continent. Soon the Kingdom would fall, a flesh worm attacking the nation as it was engulfed in a sandstorm. The descendants of Almaris would find themselves concentrated in the ruins of Savoy as they prepared a final stand against their new enemies. However, they would not succeed, managing to escape via a tunnel that the Mori had lived in. Spending a few years within the tunnels, the new continent of Aevos would soon be discovered on which the Balianese would once more be able to settle. King Adrian would, with his Duana and populace by his side, oversee the creation of Portoregne, the new capital city. Designed by Head Architect Guillermo Rutledge, this city would be luscious and grand, situated in the southern tropics of the new continent, a perfect home for the people of Balian. 

Quickly getting back to work upon this new continent, King Alexander and Amiratus var Ruthern would be instrumental in the innumerable meetings that would be held between the Canonist League and the Duchy of Adria. While raids and combat were still commonplace, it would soon begin to die down as the sides declared a ceasefire in order to come to an agreement of peace. While it took several years for such to come to fruition, it eventually would work out as the sides eventually side a peace treaty that resolved their issues with one another, once more allowing canondom to return to a sense of peace despite tensions still remaining and flaring up from time to time. 

With Aevos at peace and a new home for their people, the Kingdom’s leaders would soon begin to look inward once more, in order to improve their standard of living. Creating the Segnoria and City Charter as legislative bodies for both the nobility and commoners respectively, the participation of citizens in the running of the nation would grow further, a sight that was increasingly rare in modern nations. To complement this, with the appointment of Dante deNurem as the head of the nation’s army, the Company would be greatly reformed. Due to the new seafaring capabilities of the coastal Kingdom, Dante would see it fit to found the Royal Balianese Armada. While the Armada maintained its ability to fight upon the land, they sought to expand their naval abilities further in order to accommodate the new land they found themselves living in. This change greatly attracted both current citizens of Balian and new immigrants to the nation as people sought new challenges upon the waves of the southern sea. Such changes would grow Balian into a new age, one in which they prospered like never before, academic, cultural and structural developments accommodating the mass immigration to the lands.

In the streets of Portoregne, the tenacious adventurer spirit of Crown Princess Johanna would be seen vividly as she paced the streets with her pet Panda, sisters Princess Sibyl and Eirene and various friends. The young Crown Princess would take several adventures with her group known as ‘The Company of the Comet’, finding themselves in all manner of places as they discovered the new lands of Aevos. However, it would be this great spirit of Johanna that would become her undoing. On a fateful boat trip off the coast of Balian to find some islands for exploration, she would not be seen returning, later only the wreckage of the ship she had taken would be found by the King and his Armada. Soon the funeral would be held, with the Royal Family and nation devastated by the loss of such a beloved member. Prince Alexander Casimir would be announced as heir to the Kingdom, but the nation would not soon recover from such a loss.

The Modern Era of the Kingdom of Balian has been dutifully led by King Adrian I and until more recently Amiratus Gaius var Ruthern. Within the southern tropics several nations would find themselves clustered together, a matter that has prior led to wars for land, however preempting this, the King, Amiratus and Legate Elena Casimira would call for a meeting of the nations to sort the matter out. During this meeting, the Sol Entente and other Southern nations including the Vale of Nevaehlan would find themselves able to agree on border expansions in a manner that would allow for peace to be maintained in the tropic region. Riding off of this victory, Gaius var Ruthern would, as a final act, reorganise the City Charter into a progressive and revolutionary form of government, the Commune. The Commune is a legislative that was based off the theories and ideals of a direct democracy, allowing for all citizens of Balian to have their say in the running of the ever developing nation. 

Despite being born out of the strife of a turbulent Civil War and living through several wars from both descendants and supernatural forces, Balian has stood the test of time as all strong nations must. As the Kingdom continues to grow and develop, it will undergo several more difficulties, however the Balianese spirit is one of defiance and resilience, so the nation will always continue to weather through it.

THE BALIANESE ART OF CARTOMANCY

HISTORY

Cartomancy, the practice of divination through decks of cards, originated from Akritian folk beliefs during the Age of Silence. It is said that the early Akritians etched the names of their heroes into slivers of bark, laying them atop a pyre for trained wisefolk to ascertain their ancestral whims from the ashen haze. Persistent exposure to these vapors would cause the seers to develop reddened eyes, wrinkled skin, and a hacking cough that would often precede their arrival to the holy pyres. After missionaries from the Temple of Faith (later reformed into the Church of the Canon) successfully converted the rulers of Akritos in the eighth century, they returned to the mainland bearing stories of inflamed etchings spilling the secrets of the future into a gout of smoke. While local clergymen were quick to extinguish these tall tales of pyromancy, the Akritians and their Rhenyari progeny would continue to spread their ancestral etchings from port to port all across the fledgeling kingdoms of man, their strips of bark developing into parchment trimmings and later common playing cards.

The tomasí deck in particular, its name derived from the Flexio tomasia (wisdom), was first published in the late fifteenth century to educate illiterate Orenian commoners on the Canon. Featuring prominent figures from the Holy Scrolls on their faces, the tomasí cards would familiarize its users with canonist doctrine, even when drunk over a dealing table. However, the Rhenyari diaspora took mere years to adapt the tomasí to its own whims, its canonist imagery bolstering the credibility of their cartomantic practice. The deck found itself stowed away in many a rural soothsayer’s pockets, materializing along road-side inns and the recesses of noble courts as a method of materializing the immaterial future. This practice continued, waxing and waning in popularity over the rise and fall of empires, until its resurfacing among the Balianese following their independence from Oren. Now, occultists and opportunists alike find use of the tomasí convenient due to its durability, flexibility, and connection to man’s eldest beliefs.

STRUCTURE

The tomasí deck is constructed from sixty-four cards - twenty-four fachas (faces) and forty contras (counters). The fachas each depict a figure from the Gospel or Auspice, carrying associations in alignment with their canonical roles. The appearance of a facha accompanies significant weight within a tarot reading, denoting pivotal concepts, events or individuals within the life of the subject. 

Meanwhile, the contras are characterized by suit (laurels, swords, scepters, and globes) as well as value (ranging from one to ten). The combination of these suits and values grant each contra a unique interpretation, typically associated with the minor influences on a person’s life. While lacking the prognostic heft of the fachas, the contras nonetheless serve a vital role in the comprehensive reading of tomasí.

METHODOLOGY

(A meeting of mind and heart, c. 1750.)

Styles of tomasí reading vary by class, locality, and situation; an experienced divinist familiarizes themself with multiple styles applicable to the widest variety of audiences. A few common styles are listed below.

ALS ROLLOS

The Scrolls

The most widespread style of tomasí reading, als rollos is a four-card draw structured after the Holy Canon. The first card, corresponding to the Scroll of Virtue, signifies a strength of the subject, while the second card (Spirit) laments a shortcoming. The Gospel card draws a critical connection from the subject’s past. Lastly, Auspice speaks to a likely event in the future.

AL PONT

The Bridge

Al pont is a three-card draw seeking the unification of two disparate entities. The innate flexibility of this style bolsters its popularity among novice fortune tellers. Popular themes include self-problem-solution, past-present-future, and partner-partner-relationship.

Las Escegnas illustrate the current prediction of a subject, comprising six cards relating to the six core interrogative aspects - who, what, when, where, why, and how. The resulting spread takes the shape of the cross, with its first draw (who) pointed towards the subject.

For complex problems unable to be addressed by any other method, las fachas pugnas is a comprehensive style that makes use of the entire tomasí deck. After a series of shuffles, all sixty-four cards are laid out upon the table in the pattern of a tourney bracket. These pairs of cards duel each other by florin-flipping, dice-rolling, or the drawing of lots, with winning cards moving forward to duel other victors until only four cards remain. These select finalists are themselves dueled to create a ranking from one to four, which is then interpreted collectively by a group of divinists. Due to its drawn-out nature and the opacity of the final interpretation, las fachas pugnas finds sparse use among the kingdoms of man, only appearing in the royal courts prior to decisions of great significance.

The four suits of the contras align themselves with the prophets, their Scrolls, and their domains. It comes as no surprise that Horen’s laurels concern the soul and the appearance of a Godfreyan scepter portents matters of the material realm. In conjunction, the accompanying number on a contra denotes an estate of GOD’s kingdom and its position within the social hierarchy. All cards numbering three, for example, relate to the blacksmith, or the estate of tradespeople more generally. In conjunction with each other, the suit and number of a card determine its elemental nature and the specific manifestation of that element. The Five of Globes remarks upon the intellectual aspect of the scribe - attention to detail and a yearning for truth dominate the scribe’s mind. Ergo, upon appearance during a tarot reading, the Five of Globes may symbolize an intelligent individual, a missing detail, or the pursuit of objective truth, depending on its position within the reading.

  It is my goal and hope in writing and revising the Royal Codex that it provides clear descriptions of crimes and clear distinctions between the categories of a crime, and that it is understandable to any who read it. My wish is that defendants may understand of what they are accused, that victims may understand what has been perpetrated against them, for lawyers to understand how to argue for their clients and dissect the arguments of opponents, for Qaestors to know what to seek when investigating or prosecuting possible crimes, and so Kritai may know what crimes and categories fit a situation, so they may apply the proper charges and sentencing. However, the world is not often perfectly clear, logical, or categorical. The situations and circumstances surrounding a crime, its victim, and its perpetrator are always different, and serve to change our view of a crime and its severity. Prudence and wisdom are necessary to look into not only what was done and the evidence surrounding it, but also why it was done, how it was done, who has done it, and who it was done to.

   For example, a case of battery or murder done in self defense may not even be a crime at all; or while a diplomat or the Legate seeking to treat with foreign powers is simple routine business, a mere citizen doing such may well be treason; or how knocking over a basket of fruit at a stall and painting some non-obscene message on a wall may both be simple petty vandalism, but the latter is clearly more severe than the former. Each incident brought to court, each case, is its own being, its own unique and unclear circumstance to which we must apply our more rigid and categorical laws. And hence we have precedent - the idea that due to the fluid nature of the world, the Kritai bears the right and duty to interpret, apply, and adapt the laws to a case based on its specific circumstances, and that these choices and unique applications of law shall be preserved and recorded for future reference, to allow for the fluid, yet still consistent application of the law to cases across our history.

   In the case of Adam Randell, we laid some of the first precedents of our system which were not necessarily written out in law - that those serving our government and military are held to higher standards in crimes of disobedience and crimes against order, and may be charged with treason where another man would only be served a misdemeanor or felony; that a prosecutor may not also judge a case; that he who passes the sentence should carry it out, if it is corporal punishment and is possible for him to carry it out; that a trial by combat may, in specific circumstances, be considered as a manner of execution. These things may not be written down explicitly in the codex, but they should be referenced back to and used in future cases, for they provide examples of how the law should be applied and adapted in similar circumstances. Thus, those who seek to truly study the law of Balian should not only look to the Royal Codex and its addendums, they should also look to the Court Reports and Causa Criminalis of our previous cases, to see the precedent they have laid out, and the reasoning behind their verdicts and sentences. And hence is the reason that Court Scribes are also of great importance, because they build the great backlog of precedents on which we and our successors rely for the greater justice, order, and consistency of our legal system both now, and in the years to come. And most importantly, it shows the reason we are so careful in picking Kritai, because a corrupt or inept one will not only have a negative influence on present cases and justice, but his bad decisions and precedents will ripple out and affect our people far into the future.

   Thus, it should be understood by all that any position in the law, especially that of the Kritai, shall be chosen carefully, prudently, and after much observation and deliberation. For while the law may at times seem harsh, or even cruel, its ultimate goal is the greater justice and prosperity of our people who seek to follow it. To protect the innocent and those who have been wronged, not to be used against them for selfish ends. Hence, precedent must also be constantly reviewed, even more so than our laws. The laws are meant to be rigid, clear, categorical, and well thought out; laid down after much consideration, and then not easily or lightly changed. Precedent is meant to guide our applications of the law where lines are blurred and situations are less clear, but can be more easily and hastily be laid down, and thus may be more easily corrupted. Hence, while precedent is a helpful tool for the adaptation and interpretation of the law, it should not be viewed as an absolute, and should always be treated with some degree of scrutiny to see if it is just, and if it truly applies the situation. But with its aid, and that of the codex, and with wise, fair, and just people at the helm, we should be able to achieve a better and more just society for all our people.

Cracked pottery and a few gold pieces were what he seemed most proud of in his display, although beneath a leather tarp I spotted a marble slab, something a bit unusual. 

At first he waved me off, insisting it was nothing of value and that I would have no interest in. It took a few moments of coaxing before I was given leave to look over the slab. At first, it seemed simple, a carved inscription of a foreign language along with an image of a man and woman. Its simplicity told me it did lack value, yet I recognized its features in a way. Could it be? The statistical possibility of such would be as low as less than a full decimal point. I had little time to decide as more customers had begun flocking to the cart. It would take seconds for me to provide the man with a coin pouch, and a palace stable boy to carry and escort the slab back to my rooms in the palace. 

My doubts remained as I fully began to examine the stone. It seemed newly carved and certainly did not depict an ancient stone lost to time with precious information of my peoples past. Typically these signs would deter me from any further investigation, yet it was the foreign language which stuck to my mind. I knew it was no current elvish, nor was it Raev or Naumariav. It was something much older. I was lucky to have acquired old Flexio translations from the works of High Pontiff Everard VI, as well as notes and research from Cardinal Teodosio’s own tablet translations of Old Bathalite at my disposal to crack the code

My previous works in linguistics always seemed easily done as I have been studying the languages of Almaris for over a decade now. How hard could this translation truly be? Frottage was the easiest way for me to translate the slab without disturbing its artistic integrity. Using the parchment and charcoal to rub over the inscriptions, I was able to sketch and make footnotes separately without going through the grueling process of copying it by hand. It was a neat trick I picked up when I used to steal book pages from my fathers private collection. 

The translation of the text was not exactly hard. I saw it as a puzzle to unlock, or a key that needed maneuvering through a lock. A slippery key at that. Perhaps it was the notes I acquired or the experience I had in minor Flexio and linguistic translations, yet by the end of the hour I was done. My doubts were wrong. Somehow, by the grace of a higher being, a coveted Lothar Stone had fallen into my lap and I had translated it perfectly. Like the past tablets and their translations, this slab had its own theme. It was love.

Although marriage was an exclusive agreement, concubinage was a very common practice, especially among elites in society. It was said that the Old Bathalite Mad King once held three dozen concubines apart from his wife. Many kings were polygamous and their concubines were held as possessions unlike a spouse who was considered an equal. 

While concubines were common, the marital and votive sash union stood firm. Where tombs of kings were discovered, a single sash belonging to their wife was placed over their heart in order to represent the sole binding agreement between a married couple. Something to take note of is that it is highly possible for the practice of giving a favor in knighthood originates from the votive sashes of the Old Bathalites as it is commonplace in many societies today.

The people of Bathali are friends of love.

Each love is a ray of the Holy Light, illuminating creation.

Love comes to us first from our Creator.

And passes through the family who births us.

However we are also gifted new love throughout our lives.

It is among these gifts we will find our chiefest love.

This is the person with whom we unite our spirit.

We have a ceremony for the honoring of our chiefest love.

We practice this rite only once while our beloved lives.

First we call upon a priest to witness us.

And we thank the Creator for this gift.

We remove our starry sash and exchange it with our beloved.

This symbolizes the holy union of our spirits.

Thereafter, in all matters we are as one heart.

Our mother is the mother of our beloved.

Their stars are our stars.

Most often a man will give his sash to his wife.

For it is impossible that two will marry unless they are each other’s chiefest loves.

However the exchanging of sashes is practiced even by eunuchs in our land.

For love is a matter of spirit rather than flesh.

The light of the stars cannot be held with two hands.

In this way, friends may also make their hearts one.

This year it was done by two companion-knights.

They were the son of Louis and the son of Cyricus.

Thereafter they shared everything.

Many women lamented, for they were graceful and their families held much property.

No one gives a sash if they do not have one.

They must first don their own sash as a mark of thanks to the Creator.

We show we are thankful for our own heart and for the gift of our spirit.

Our sash is donned when we are ready to love.

Therefore when it is given away, the sash is of great significance to us.

It is most commendable if woven by the giver.

But the love with which it is given is more serious.

Some of us have bought our sashes or inherited them.

Two things are never done:

Never have both sashes come from the same giver.

Two spirits must be joined, and one heart is not united to itself.

Never have kinsmen exchanged sashes.

One family is not united to itself.

If a stranger or beggar wishes to wear a sash but has none,

the priest will tear a strip from his own robe.

If a lover has no hands for weaving, their family will weave one.

In the province of love, no one can be destitute.

There are no foreigners in the land of love.

In this manner, the priest of Peroz has torn his robe for many.

Mighty among them was my love Hiwot, a Sahiri lady.

She was foreign to us and the priest tore a sash for her.

but he did not know she was skilled in swordplay and therefore nimble of hands.

She had woven her own sash.

Although adultery may still be commonplace, I see no positive way for such a practice to come back in the form of concubinage, yet the votive sashes are something I believe to be an important symbolic practice that I hope to one day elope back into Balianese society. Relationships - love, friendship and trust is more important that we often recognize and I am firmly of the opinion that this should be reestablished. 

The Kingdom of Balian and its people are pure and passionate in their beliefs and in recognizing the importance of those passions, I believe only good may come. I call upon the courts to introduce and encourage the custom of votive sashes and I plead to the Basilica La Sorella and the clergymen and women within to seek out those in need and provide sashes to. In times of turmoil and strife such as now, love and friendships are of the utmost importance to remind ourselves that we are not alone and we are all descendants of brothers.

The Novellen Collection is a compendium of literary and academic works that dates back to the early eighteenth century, and is considered an essential directory of the standing imperial archives of that era. Encompassing a wide range of subjects, from children's literature and national song to biological reference books and treatises of war, this archive provides valuable insights into the intellectual influences that shaped early Petrine thought.

Despite the significant contribution of the archive's creator, Jasper Cardinal Renzfeld, his remarkable talent in documentation was often overlooked and regarded as frivolous by some of his contemporaries. Critics labeled him a pedant and recluse during a time of great war and crisis, which has, in this author's eyes, resulted in the minister being denied the same level of recognition as some of the fellow titans of state he served alongside in the first imperial cabinet. 

However, the Royal Balianese Academy is seeking to reassess his legacy and shed light on the value of his cataloguing efforts, particularly in context of the global decline in literacy and academia over the past century. The venerable Sarkozy priest and statesman functioned as one of the longest, if not the longest serving minister of the Basrid Ministry, and his efforts have only grown more commendable with time.

The Academy has now published to the public the Novellen Collection in full, with the aim of preserving historical integrity and inspiring a new generation of academics and writers to examine works from before the contemporary period and consider the value of an effective catalogue. By doing so, the Academy hopes that the Novellen Collection can be expanded upon in the future to include the works from beyond Cardinal Renzfeld's time, thus contributing to the preservation and sharing of knowledge for future generations.

God save the King and blessings upon your houses.

By way of introduction, I am Luis Francesc Jacint-Almeida i Martin, known more commonly simply as Almeida, and I am a senior academic at the Royal Balianese Academy. My father was an Imperial settler, but I was born in Atrus, and raised as part of the first generation of new Balianese. The corpus of my work relates mostly to anthropology, culture, history and economics, and that being so, I am loath to venture into the realm of politics. However, so great are the concerns of many at the Academy that I felt it necessary to voice them on my colleagues’ behalf, in the setting of this published open letter. 

I am writing to you today with respect to the crisis unfolding in the Heartlands. The parties involved in this civil unrest I shall not name in the first part of this letter, because their identities are irrelevant to my fundamental concerns. As you know, while Atrus and the Terra del Sur have thrived under the rule of the Balianese, the Heartlands have contemporaneously evolved increasingly towards dystopia since at least the time of Fratricida. To quote my esteemed colleague, Guillermo Ruttledge, ‘it is said the sun is blotted out by the towers of keeps and manors’. Urbanization has culminated in a greatly depressed quality of life for the average Heartlander, who now leads an existence that can only be described as nasty, brutal and short. Having lived there as an expatriate for several years in the service of Constanz-Anton, I know this both personally as well as theoretically. As Balianese, these lands may comprise our ancestral origin, but they are not our home now, and have not been for some time.

Therefore, it has concerned myself and several of my colleagues at the Academy to hear rumors that the Royal Duana is contemplating a military intervention in the Heartlands on behalf of the so-called ‘King’ of the Aunishmen. If this is true, it is, put simply, a streak of foreign policy madness, and is one we are desperate to warn you against for a number of reasons. Tin-pot dictators and petty tyrants have risen and fallen in the Heartlands, many of whom last less than a decade before they are expunged by their own miserable people. Meanwhile, we have enjoyed untold stability and peace in our slice of the world. Hence, I must ask you these questions:

What cause could we possibly have to sacrifice the lives of Balianese soldiers so that these glorified ‘chieftains’ may rule an extra five years, before their inevitable deposition? 

What cause, beneficial to our foreign policy, do we achieve by such an action? What do we gain except the eternal acrimony of the insurgents?

In what scenario do we benefit more? That where we send our boys to die in a land we were forcibly exiled from, in order to nebulously ‘keep the peace’ there? Or where we continue to build our own country towards prosperity, among fellow Lotharistas? 

Of course, that is the purely utilitarian argument. An ideological position can just as easily be asserted: that of the reprehensible character of the self-declared ‘King’ of the Aunishmen, and that of his well-documented antipathy towards the Balianese people and ruling dynasty.

This imperiled ‘monarch’, if one can call him that, commenced his reign by breaking a treaty co-signed by the late king of Balian, His Majesty John the First. After being elected as president of the Harvest Confederation, a union bound together by constitutional documents affirmed by all the monarchs of Canondom, he immediately and unilaterally declared himself ‘king’ of a polity hitherto only referenced in Holy Scrolls, and proclaimed no treaty bound him. Those who opposed this brazen violation of law were henceforth deported. He was saved from his own people only by the malaise of contemporary Haeseni foreign policy.

Thus, he proclaimed himself restored to a throne his last ancestor held centuries ago. In the intermittent time, his family had been reduced to the status of woodland-dwelling bandits out in the Cragenmarch, admixing with all manner of highwaymen and criminals. Having spent his formative years raised on tales of Johannian greatness and Novellen perfidy, in between bites of hardtack and roasted rat, this glorified desperado developed a hatred for all Balian represents. For decades, his goal was the extermination of the royal dynasty that rules our country, and still this is evident in his rhetoric. After a storied career as a terrorist living in a cave, he managed to connive his way into a throne through pure circumstance, and now expects the faithfulness which he refused to give any other ruler. 

As Balianese, we appreciate merit, diligence and loyalty. I was initially uneasy when I heard that the Royal Duana’s foreign policy was realigning to treating such a person with kid gloves, but I contented myself with the fact that at least the Aunishman’s rhetoric against Balian would subside. As it happens, old habits die hard. Despite the signing of multiple treaties with the Royal Duana, the new Fratricida of Aaun has done nothing to moderate his own anti-Balianism. Every third sentence he utters, he proposes the eradication of all Novellen ‘usurpers’, condemns the ‘tyranny’ of our predecessor realm, the Petrine Empire, and lauds himself as the glorious liberator of humanity. Even today, in the context of a full-scale revolt against him, he smears his opponents as ‘Imperials’, ‘Petrines’ and ‘Novellens’ as if these labels constitute the worst a person can be. 

His contempt for our country, and our heritage, has not reduced despite the favorable treatment the Royal Duana has offered him. Given that he was a key part of the initial Harvest Confederation incursion against Atrus that led to the response of the Canonist princes, this should come as no surprise. Never has he shown any contrition. He has managed to evade all justice for that offense, purely through chance, so why now should we risk Balianese lives to help him continue in his ways?

But perhaps most significantly, there is no reason to suggest that this dithering chieftain is in any way competent. Having inherited - through connivance - the territory developed by his predecessors, his only resource has been to strip off these land assets and grant them to more capable men. His rhetoric, condemning the Petrine Empire for its predominantly successful policies and instead espousing the absolute rights of vassals, has backed him into a corner where he simply cannot be recognized as a ruler at all. There is no concept of what it is to be an Aunishman. There are Adrians and Minitzers and Viennese (though only a handful), but not a single Aunishman. It is a national fiction bastardized from centuries old religious texts, and over the course of his powerless ‘reign’, this ruler has done nothing to develop such a thing.  

Conservative estimates indicate that only 2-3% of Aunish commercial activity takes place in a territory the ‘king’ has any control or influence over. The remaining 97-98% is instead facilitated by his vassals, the bulk of which is under the control of the insurgents who have so far only defeated him in battle. What kind of sovereign is so jeopardized that he controls only his palace at Vienne? It is true that Adrian commerce has flourished, but the King of the Aunishmen has never encouraged it with a single coin. 

We Balianese should bear no will against this Sarkozic rebel, for he has simply capitalized on the system - or lack thereof - maintained by his erstwhile master. Despite all the evidence to the contrary, this sovereign has doggedly clung to these ideologies out of sheer, acrimonious spite for us Balianese and our Petrine ancestors. Now, his realm is imperiled because of this intransigence. It is not our role, given all the factors I have enumerated, to help him out of this mess of his own creation. 

His Majesty, the late John I, understood the truth of the Aunishman’s dilemma. I pray that you esteemed dones and donas of the Royal Duana may advise his heir of his father’s own wisdom.

Dear reader,

The Balianese are a people forged in the crucible of catastrophe, war and exile. Since the days of the Brothers’ War to the present era of Cloudbreaker and new Atrus, the story of Balian has been one of survival against the odds. Despite this, much of our history has never been consigned to written work. 

For decades now, the Royal Balianese Academy has sought to generate support for a comprehensive effort documenting the development of Balianese civilization. Though our work is far from completed, we aim for this publication to form the framework for that movement. In this volume, we aim to provide an in-depth study of the Balianese, encompassing elements of Balianese culture ranging from the history of the Terra del Sur to the development of the Balianese language. 

Important distinction must be made between the demonym of ‘Balianese’ and ‘Balianite’. In this context, the label of Balianese applies to those modern inhabitants of the Kingdom of Balian founded by John I in the 19th century. Balianite, subsequently referred to as Balthalite from here on in this text, refers to the ancient people of Balian in the time of Saint Lothar of Balian, several millennia ago, and despite some scholarly misconceptions is not applicable to the present-day Balianese. 

Though we initially set out to publish this text in a single document, over the course of the writing process, the body of our work became too lengthy to justify this. That being so, we have split this title into two volumes. May the educated reader derive some illumination from both.

II. HISTORY

The modern Balianese identity can be described as a composite of three major influences: the Petrine peoples of the fallen Holy Orenian Empire, the Rhenyari of the east, and the lost civilization of the Balthalites. Each has played a significant role in shaping the national traditions of the Heartlanders of the Terra del Sur, albeit the Petrine primarily by blood and heritage, and the Rhenyari and Balthalites by ethos and culture.

The oldest of Balian’s codified heroes, or nobelissimos, that Balianese nobility can claim lineage from is Anne Augusta, Holy Orenian Empress, and for good reason. It is her union with Joseph II that begins the modern Petrine identity from which the Balianese claim descent. Anne Augusta’s marriage to Joseph II marked a watershed moment among the Heartlander peoples, where two long estranged camps of Heartlander identities, the commercially-inclined Adrians and the imperious, militant Renatians, came together under Peter III with the Edict of Succession of 1759 to captain one of the great civilizations of the world.

PETRINE HERITAGE

The new Petrine identity corresponded with the great successes of the Imperial capital of Helena in the eighteenth century, the era coming to be defined by its people’s resilience, grit, cosmopolitanism, legal scholarship, adherence to martial drill, urban reform, and mysticism. A more in-depth understanding of the Petrine identity can be found in Celestine E. Herbert’s The Heart of the Tapestry: An Ethnographic Study of the Imperial Crownlands.

However, the failure and excesses of various Imperial monarchs and their governments festered into a slow national decline. A crisis of identity loomed as the Petrine people had failed to define their traditions beyond their Imperial achievements. With a leadership too unaligned to deliver meaningful reform of the crumbling state, the Petrine culture stagnated and never managed to invigorate a now meretricious Empire. 

Civil discord, rebellion, coups, and great coalition wars all checkered the Empire’s last days, before it finally collapsed in a succession war between the imperial princes Peter Augustus and Frederick Charles. When the Brothers’ War concluded and Oren’s last emperor, Peter IV, had been slain by Frederick Fratricida, the usurper rounded up and forcibly deported all those who had fought in support of his elder brother’s throne. Ultimately, whatever national ambitions of the Petrine people to return to their past glories went to the grave with their final monarch. 

THE GRANDUCATO AND THE HARVEST WAR (1869—1884) 

Peter IV’s uncle and supporter, the Prince John Casimir of Renzfeld, realized this truth, and began to set course away from the ruins of the Empire into the new lands south, to work towards a new kind of providence for his displaced followers. The growing identity of the settlers was colored by the Prince’s own personal taste - John’s upbringing at court had brought him a particular fascination with the tales of Old Rhen, propagated by the first Novellen Governor of the Palace, Jahan Basrid. He adopted neo-Akritian dress, customs, and even their stargazing traditions, to mixed reception among the now displaced Petrine people.

By tracking the star of Saint Lothar of Balian, John Casimir found a natural spring on the Mont Monterosa, and founded the city of Atrus upon it, electing to form the Grand Duchy of Balian in honor of the saint whose star led him to such an oasis. His reign is where the Balianese language emerged, a form of bastard Flexio that was utilized to unify the indigenous Qali, the Petrine settlers, and Rhenyari traders that often came to bargain for the settlement’s resources and, more often than not, prey on the King’s Akritophilia. The Balianese identity remained muddled and uncodified for a long time, as great swathes of the population remained unconvinced of John’s Akritian fascinations, and instead clung to Imperial legend in the hope of redemption.

A notable split in the nascent Balianese identity emerged after a brigade including the Balianese knight Sir Apollyon Marshall managed to slay King Frederick during the Harvest War, thereby avenging the lost cause of the last Emperor. Some saw justice delivered in full, while others saw an opportunity to restore the Petrine connection to the mainland. 

THE DIASPORAZION (1884—1900) 

The allied victory in the Harvest War had led the nascent Balianese duchy to royal ascendancy, but it also had led to the formation of two factions under John I’s reign - each dividing their support between his two sons, Alexander and Constantine. While Alexander, heir to Balian, sought to continue the King’s model of neo-Akritianism, Constantine rejected what he believed was fundamentally the clumsy imitation of a long-dead civilization with no tangible connection to the settlers of the Monterosa. 

These dissenting views came to a head when the King and the Chancellor of the Petra contracted an arranged marriage between Prince Constantine and the Archduchess of the Petra, Renilde Novellen-Temesch et Moere, thereby sending his second son north to the lands of the old country. Within a decade, many former Imperial officers and bureaucrats (by now of venerable years) left for the Petra with Constantine, who adopted the Petran name of Constanz-Anton upon assuming his role as the Archduchess’ consort. This exodus greatly diminished the quality of Balian’s leadership, placing a strain on the country’s administrative and military resources. Moreover, emigration was not confined to the educated classes, with many of the children of the first pioneers leaving the Terra del Sur seeking further economic opportunities in the industrialized Heartlands, as migrant workers. In the midst of this phenomena, known as the Diasporazion, the octogenarian John I expired, his constitution weakened by the crisis. 

The Diasporazion was accompanied by the proliferation of anti-Balianese sentiment amongst the Heartlands, spurred by local feeling turning against the migrant workers. This antipathy was compounded in part by the Imperial ancestry of the Balianese, with many Heartlanders holding the legacy of the Empire in ill regard. 

THE RENOVATIO (1900—) 

The impact that the Diasporazion had on the Balianese identity cannot be understated. With much of the country's administrative talent sourced elsewhere, Atrus and its surrounding territories proved more prone to famine, emigration, disease, and economic hardship. By the year Alexander I had finally inherited, Balian’s adult population had roughly halved since its height during the time of his predecessor’s royal coronation.

However, it was under Alexander’s reign that the Safar Missive reached the Balianese government and spurred significant change for its ailing society. A letter from the foreign power of Ba’as, it challenged Balian’s neo-Akritianism and instead offered a new path for the country’s development by aligning with the eastern realm’s values and interests. As a result, Balian welcomed a number of eastern administrators to rebuild their country’s infrastructure and bureaucracy, reform their cultural identity, and capitalize on one of the rare benefits of their location in the arid south - the pursuit of rare artifacts of the St. Lothar’s lost Balthalite civilization, that Ba’as revealed was in the Terra del Sur.

Under King Alexander, Balian has pursued a policy of Renovatio, codifying many of its traditions and building up new institutions. Rather than simply mirror the extinct Akritian kingdoms of old, the Renovatio pushes Balian to take cultural concepts from Petrine, Rhenyari, and old Balthalite society to build a new model one. As more and more of the Stones of St. Lothar, tablets depicting his life and realm, were recovered, Balianese society began to see itself as a modern successor to the extinct Balthalite civilization, and thus began to mold their society closer to his image. 

All these reforms came in a timely fashion, as they gave Balian the momentum and drive to confront one of its greatest challenges, the mythical undead dragon Cloudbreaker. Defeating the aberration had been a clear triumph for the Balianese. The new Atrus built in the wake of its draconic assault has become the center of a new definitive Balianese identity, one that transcends imperial ambition and now exists as its own unique entity.

III. CIVIC CULTURE

FE, STAT I PROSPERITAT

The rhyming archwords of the Balianese phrase ‘fe, stat i prosperitat’ translate to Common as ‘faith, state and prosperity’, and this motto neatly summarizes the ethos of the Heartlanders of the Terra del Sur.

The virtue of faith, while in modern times is usually interpreted as connoting religious piety and loyalty to the Church of the Canon, actually carries a deeper meaning as Saint Lothar intended it. In the Lotharian context, faith is a force that eclipses temporal logic and reason, linking to the ultimate truth and powering the meaning and purpose derived from that connection. It is an intangible yet powerful source of guidance transcending the limitations of the physical world, and it was this interpretation of faith that rallied the primordial Balthalites in their quest under Saint Lothar.

Likewise, the phrase’s reference to the state refers not specifically to a political entity - but to the collective, a community bound together by shared values, beliefs and aspirations. Far from being composed singularly of governing institutions and a regulatory authority, the Lotharian interpretation of the state entails a manifestation of the collective soul of the people. In this context, the word ‘state’ can be aligned more accurately with the modern notion of a ‘society’, in the sense that it is a partnership between its members. This partnership cannot thrive without common ground and confraternity, and so the ideal of the Balianese state serves as a source of inspiration and guidance by providing this unity of purpose. 

While the components of ‘faith’ and ‘state’ derive directly from the primordial writings of Saint Lothar in his Second Tablet, the third pronouncement of prosperity was coined from the philosophy of the founder of Balian, John the First, itself built off the Lotharian command of ‘enterprise’ referenced within the same text. To be Balianese is to be a pioneer, to make a living off whatever resources are available, to survive in the toughest of climes and to disavow the decadence of the last years of the Old Empire. Hard work and an inclination towards commerce are highly valued amongst the Balianese, an inheritance from the mercantile cultures of Helena and Ves, and this is tempered by the iron endurance of a frontier civilization. 

LOTHARIANISMO 

Lotharianismo, in the Common tongue expressed as ‘Lotharianism’, is best described as an expression of the ethno-cultural identity championed by the Balianese. Due to their inheritance of the Lothar Stones, as well as the founding myth of Balian’s settlement being derived from the Star of Lothar, the Balianese perceive themselves as successor to the primordial Balthalites, and hence idolize Saint Lothar as their champion. 

Lotharianism has now emerged as one of the forefront cultural ideologies that make up Balianese thought. Saint Lothar is viewed as an icon only next to the Exalted in their faith, and the way that Balianese navigate society is sometimes predicated on the notion of contemplating what the First Knight would do when faced with a similar challenge. 

The interpretation of Saint Lothar in Balianese society is best characterized as his role as the Bannerlord, rebelling and deposing his corrupted father Emperor Bero alongside his virtuous, cosmopolitan companions, called in Balianese the Lotharistas. Lothar’s band is often described as one with a strong collective will, and we see that manifest in modern Balianese society, with the capital of Balian’s motto being Things Held in Common. Other depictions link back to his work as a poet and author in the Lothar Stones, celebrating his visions of trade, love, and war. 

Lotharianism is a natural extension of the historical Providental thought of the Petrine people. Both act as north stars that guide their populations towards a stronger sense of virtue and national spirit. However, unlike the Eye of Providence - which existed only as a metaphysical concept inspired by Emperor Peter III’s interpretations of the Canon, the great body of which was focused on striving towards the progressive ‘achievement’ of Providence - Lotharianismo anchors itself in past antiquity, with the romantic legends of Saint Lothar and the Balthalite people. 

LA HAZIENTA 

The hazienta is an outcrop of the cultural value which the Balianese place on industriousness and commercial activity, particularly given the context of the untamed wasteland of the Terra del Sur. That being so, the concept of a hazienta is difficult to translate, but can be roughly approximated to that of an ‘estate’ or ‘factory’, in that it constitutes a private landholding dedicated to the production of some resource for sale on the market, either domestically or for export. 

One aspect of the noblesse oblige that the aristocrats of Balian are expected to honor is the duty of maintaining a healthy hazienta. The land grants bestowed to peers of the realm ought to be productive in some capacity, whether in matters commercial, agricultural, or industrial. Given their status as a settler people, such work is not seen as beneath the Balianese nobility or landholders, but rather part of their cultural inheritance. To help tame the arid Terra del Sur and build novel enterprise is regarded as a great virtue, and a reminder of the ingenuity and assiduousness of a people once in exile. An especially productive hazienta can lay the foundation towards a trade post or settlement under the Balianese crown.

Balianese faith and folklore often reflects such sentiment as well, promoting the stories of how the Exalted Sigismund began his fortune in the empire bottling and selling spirits, or how the noble Saint Godwin Stafyr, even at the height of his renown, still joined his loggers at their common trade. In an ideal Balianese society, the Crown and council often review the health of the various hazientas, offering support to peers and landholders to ensure the patchwork network of trade and commerce around the capital is in good health. 

Hazientas with an agricultural focus may produce hardy crops amenable to the heat of the Balianese climate, including but not limited to grapes, sugar, coffee, tomatoes, peppers, cotton, lemons, olives, rice and other grains. Those of a more industrial scale may entail vineyards, mills, oil presses, abattoirs and textile factories, as well as sundry other enterprises such as silver mines or steelworks. Many hazientas contain a handful of these related activities under a common ownership, with each step of production integrated in a way that maximizes self-sufficiency. 

LA FUSTA

The fusta is an article of clothing woven from any textile and worn over the shoulders as a protective outer layer, constituting a key component of the Balianese national dress for both genders. These garments are typically dyed or decorated with colorful patterns and symbols, often suggestive of the heritage and status of the wearer. They were originally contrived in the last century to protect from the tumultuous weather conditions of the Terra del Sur, with different fabrics tailored for use in variant temperatures. This is expressed most commonly through linen or cotton fustas, which are well-suited to the summer heat of Balian, however, winter fustas are more frequently woven from wool or other heavy fabrics. They may be worn by civilians or as a part of military dress, in which instance they are designed to partially cover a soldier’s cuirass.

The Balianese word fusta is itself a bastardization of the Rhenyari fustanella, the furred moon-cloaks of Old Ba’as from which the fusta is originally derived. When introduced by Rhenyari traders some time in the 19th century, the fustanella - designed originally for the mountainous climes of their far-flung homeland - proved too hot and cumbersome for the Balianese sun. Moreover, the Rhenyari fustanella was complex and expensive to manufacture, with local tailors unable to effectively replicate it without the advanced knowledge of the craftsmen of Ba’as. Accordingly, the weavers of Atrus adapted it into a far simpler, looser, blanket-like garment slung over the shoulders instead of worn as a great-cloak. 

The original Rhenyari custom was for each fustanella’s coloration to reflect its wearer’s noble lineage. For example, the prolific Basrid family were identifiable by their customary pearl-white cloaks, even well into the time of their considerable Imperialization. These traditions have continued with the Balianese fusta, with those mantles dyed a geometric purple and yellow characteristic of those associated with the ruling dynasty. 

ALS VERDALGOS

The verdalgos (f. verdalgas) are the men and women of the Balianese aristocracy, enjoying the highest status at the court of Atrus and the privileges associated with this standing. The word verdalgo itself originates as an informal contraction of the Balianese phrase ‘ver de algo’, translating to ‘son of something’ or ‘son of someone’. They are distinct from peers, who hold a peerage in fief to the King of Balian by way of royal letters, but may not necessarily hold verdalgo status. 

Verdalgos have the right to stand at the dais with the King at his court, and are gifted a personalized fusta in their familial colors in the setting of a royal ceremony, whereby the monarch lowers the garment over their shoulders. Individual verdalgos of the highest regard are also eligible for personal tax concessions (not including taxes on peerages) when granted by royal decree, in exchange for the pledge of their personal military service. As with most of the upper strata of Balian, they are addressed with the prefix of don or dona for men and women respectively. However, as a sign of familiarity and the royal favor, they are also entitled to the oral address of primo and prima when spoken to by the monarch.

The criteria for being accepted as a verdalgo remains somewhat nebulous, with different grades of verdalgo status existing in the public consciousness. For this reason, the Royal Balianese Academy established the following standards for recognition of an individual enjoying the standing of a verdalgo. 

• The adoption and exhibition of Balianese culture and nomenclature, which is considered the most important and non-negotiable factor, and therefore cannot be compromised;

• Possessing four grandparents recognized as either verdalgos or ancient Imperial nobility, in the case of retrospectively recognized verdalgos de leinua (of lineage);

• Productivity and contribution to the realm, in the case of verdalgos de merit (of merit), who are officiated by letters patent from the Crown;

• Marriage within one’s status;

• Literacy, including a documented family history. 

While verdalgo status is technically heritable, it may also be deprived from individuals who diverge from these criteria. Moreover, the grandchild of a verdalgo de merit, if all other grandparents were recognized as verdalgos of any kind, is automatically considered a verdalgo de leinua. Despite the austere origins of the hard-bitten Balianese identity, most verdalgos have a rather contradictory reputation for a gentleman’s flamboyance and a colorful sense of dress.

IV. PHYSICAL TRAITS

The Balianese phenotype carries with it many similarities with that of other Heartlander subgroups, however, ultimately also entails a handful of key differences. The information conveyed herein is a general assessment, with exceptions existing as they do in most civilizations.

The first wave of emigration of exiled Imperials to the arid climate of the Terra del Sur represented a substantial change in the conditions they were accustomed to enduring, leading the indigenous people of the South to dub them with the lighthearted label of the ‘Redfolk’ - in reference to the settlers’ perpetually-sunburnt skin. Today, only those Balianese of undiluted Imperial ancestry remain flushed scarlet under the sun’s rays, but the sobriquet of the Redfolk remains as a colloquialism. More typically, Balianese are tanned or olive-skinned, more so than the average Heartlander of temperate climes but not so swarthy as a Qalasheen. They tend towards darker hair colors such as black, dark brown, or copper, on account of a few generations of admixture with Rhenyari and other Farfolk, however, blondes and light browns do exist less commonly. The Balianese are usually far more hirsute than other Heartlanders, with most men possessing an abundance of coarse facial and body hair ranging from straight to slightly curled.

Dark-rimmed and sunken eyes are prevalent amongst the Balianese, with irises of any coloring. Those with most Imperial ancestry tend towards gray, a holdout from the prolific reproduction of the primeval House of Horen, but greens, browns and blues are also present among the broader population. Additionally, most Balianese have aquiline noses, frequently verging towards hooked - another trait which they share with the Qalasheen Farfolk, distinguishing them from both conventional Heartlanders and the more distant Highlanders. They generally have a prominent facial structure, with a strong jawline and high cheekbones. Elder Balianese are usually prematurely lined and grave when compared to their Heartland progenitors, with leather-like faces from decades of sun exposure. 

The fashion of Balian tends towards bright and warm colors, reflective of the climate within which they have made their home. This may range from the flamboyance of a verdalgo gentleman to the simple red and orange fusta of a common merchant. The heat of the Terra del Sur makes the heavy furs and tight frocks of the Heartlands untenable, and so light and breathable forms of clothing are preferred. Wide-brimmed hats are common as shields from the sun, often pinned up on one side and, and in the case of wealthier Balianese, trimmed with an ostrich plume. For the same purpose, robes and veils of manifold colors are popular among Balianese ladies. A rare few articles of clothing are influenced by a neo-Akritian design, however, too much of an emphasis on these customs is broadly considered to be gauche and dated, akin to wearing a costume.

V. LANGUAGE AND NOMENCLATURE

At time of writing, the Royal Balianese Academy has become aware of the widespread practice of admixing Balianese and Common in speech, with no respect to the grammatical rules of either and presumably for nationalistic reasons. While this enthusiasm must be commended, there is no reason for a Balianese gentleman to mangle the Common speech with the local language to create a kind of ‘half-half’, pidgin language. These systems of grammar are fundamentally incompatible, particularly when concerning personal pronouns and verbs. 

While it is understood that the codification of Balianese is a continued work in progress, these practices were not Ferraz’s intention when he ascribed the vulgar dialect of Atrus to a written form. Moreover, they are at odds with the Academy’s mission to further our language and protect its integrity. All Balianese are educated in the grammar of Common and should speak accordingly. In order to promote foreign investment in, and trade with, our homeland, we must preserve our connections with the world at large. These interests are not served by our representatives using a garbled lexicon. 

However, the Balianese language may be judiciously employed in some normal circumstances, specifically in the context of statements that require little grammatical parsing with Common, such as greetings, courtesies, interjections and maxims. As a general rule, the use of these singular expressions (i.e ‘ai’ or ‘nen’) is acceptable in Common, whereas pronouns (i.e ‘teu’ or ‘eu’) and more complicated, mixed sentences, are inadvisable. 

The Royal Balianese Academy remains available for the translation of any document into linguistically-prescribed Balianese upon request, without charge. That being so, we have compiled a reference list for the aforementioned acceptable expressions, which are fit for inclusion in everyday vernacular speech. 

COMMON PHRASES IN BALIANESE

Ai - ‘Yes’. Pronounced ‘aye’. 

Originates from the Common, specifically the Highlander dialectal, ‘aye’. 

Nen - ‘No’. Pronounced ‘nenn’. 

Originates from the Common ‘no’, and is analogous to most negatives. 

Saluto / Salut - ‘Hello’ or ‘hail’. Pronounced ‘SAH-lu-TO’. 

Originates from the Flexio ‘salus’, specifically meaning ‘to your health’. 

Adeus - ‘Goodbye’ (Informal). Pronounced ‘ad-EH-us’. 

An informal goodbye, cognatic to the Auvergnat ‘adieu’ and with a common ancestor in Flexio from the phrase ‘a deus’, meaning ‘to God’. 

Vale - ‘Goodbye’ (Formal). Pronounced ‘VAL-eh’.
 

A formal goodbye, from the Flexio ‘vale’ with the same meaning, albeit a different pronunciation. Seldom used among friends and more typical in formal correspondence. 

Graza - ‘Thanks’ or ‘thank-you’. Pronounced ‘GRAT-za’.

A corruption of the Flexio ‘gratia’, in the long form ‘gratia a deus’, meaning ‘thanks be to God’. Now applicable as a general sign of gratitude.

Per fauri - ‘Please’. Pronounced ‘per FOW-ri’.

Translates directly to ‘for your favor’, in the context of ‘favor’ meaning good-will. Functionally, an analogue to the Common ‘please’, with a cognatic origin through the word ‘plea’.  Informally, simply expressed as ‘fauri’. 

Clar - ‘Of course’ or ‘I agree’. Pronounced ‘klar’. 

This word literally means ‘clear’ in Balianese, but is more typically used to express agreement or acknowledgement.

Oxala  - ‘I hope,’ or ‘If only’. Pronounced ‘o-HA-la’. 

A corruption of the Qalasheen expression ‘inshallah’, meaning ‘God willing’. Note that the ‘x’ in Balianese is always pronounced as an ‘h’ sound.

Otimo - ‘Excellent’ or ‘very well’. Pronounced ‘ott-IH-mo’.

While directly translating to ‘optimal’ in Balianese, it is more often used as a synonym for ‘good’ or ‘very well’, expressing confirmation or praise. 

Embruxat - An expletive. Pronounced ‘em-bru-HAT’. 

A derivative of the Balianese word ‘embruxata’, meaning ‘bewitched’, in the verb form ‘embruxar’, as in ‘to be bewitched’. A curse word, only to be used in an informal context, and usually exclaimed.

Avanza - ‘Forward’ or ‘advance’. Pronounced ‘ah-VAN-za’.

Primarily used as a military command, but also applicable in civilian use in the setting of ‘let’s go’, ‘let’s leave’, or ‘let’s commence’. An imperative form of the verb ‘avanzar’, meaning ‘to advance’.
