HIS HOLINESS EVERARD VI, High Pontiff of the Church of the Canon, Archbishop of Visigia, Successor of the High Priesthood of the Church, Supreme Pontiff of the Church of True Faith, Keeper of the Canon, Missionary to Aeldin, High Servant to the Exalted's Testaments, Humble Servant of the Faithful and Vicar of GOD.

"So I am the Most High, and in pursuit of My Virtue, I bid my faithful this:

You shall not blaspheme My Word, nor any thing that is holy."

(Virtue 1:8)

Most Beloved Brethren, Health and Pontifical Benediction.

We thank you for your letter, and for your reaffirmation of Our status as the one and true High Pontiff of God’s Church. As We wrote in Our letter to the Prince of Savoy who,  just this Saint’s Day, undertook a walk of penance and was forgiven for his transgressions, your sin was one of ultimate pride and ambition, unbecoming of the temporal successor of the Exalteds. In this role, you have failed. As fidei defensor, you have failed, choosing instead to abandon the faith that you swore to uphold but a few Saint’s Days ago when We crowned you.

With this addressed, We shall move to the contents of your letter. We find it unbecoming for a penitent to request their own penance, but shall offer a response to each of the proposals that you have made to Us. On the first point, the offer of land, We have no interest in owning land outside of the capital cities of the nations of Canondom. In New Providence, We have the Basilica of the Argentate Star and the Pontifical residence behind it, Haense has given us plans for a Pontifical residence, and Savoy will be soon to follow. Not only this, but in order to populate this new Church settlement, We shall have to recall clergy from their postings throughout Canondom, which would only serve to impede the Church’s mission to serve the Canonist people.

Your second proposal, a confession of your sins to Us, is a requirement of any penance and so We shall accept. We must, however, deny the third proposal from your letter. We crowned you both, and We reaffirmed your status as Holy Orenian Emperor and Empress through Papal Bull, as is Our right as the Vicar of God. Our titles, however, are affirmed only by God alone, who chose Us through Our election by the College of Cardinals of His Church.

Your betrayal hurts Us more than the betrayal of the Prince of Savoy, given our shared responsibility as the successors of the Exalted. While you serve as leaders of the Holy Orenian Empire, We serve as the leader of the one true Church. You are the Crown to Our Laurel. In order to prevent such future betrayal, an effort must be made to secure the Church’s position within the Empire. Before your true penance begins, We would ask that August Cardinal Providentia be given a seat upon your Council of State, to speak on Our behalf when needed and to serve as spiritual advisor to you.

Once this has been done, We would have you both walk to Karosgrad in the same manner as the Prince of Savoy. Wearing humble clothes and with no fanfare, save a few guards for your safety, you must walk from New Providence to Karosgrad. Canonists who remained faithful may choose to throw waste or jeer at you, but you must not resist. Only by this act of humility may you both atone for your sin of great pride. Once you have arrived before Us, you shall kiss Our ring out of respect to Our position as the true Vicar of God. You will then condemn the false Pontiff and seek forgiveness for your sins, upon which We shall list the remainder of your penance. Once all this has been done, then We shall lift the excommunication upon you and withdraw the interdict upon your country.

We pray We shall see you soon, and hope that with your penance, the divide in Our church shall finally be healed.

Pontifex Maximus,

Everardus Sextus

Ernst smile as he nodded to the Pontiff's letter  "A rightous letter by a rightous Pontiff. GOTT bless His Holiness." cheered the Count from his bedroom in Freimark.

From Woldzmir, the Dowager-Duchess of Adria awaited the Crown's response to this order of penance. As she gazed out from the balcony of the Kremlin, she could just make out the silhouette of Karosgrad's rounded steeples and crimson walls. It would be there that she would witness her stepson and his wife's  repentence, in order to rid themselves of the deep stain that had marred their reign in it's infancy. The widow was more concerned at the lasting effect this culmination of schism would have, should they set aside their pride.

As images raced through her mind, the imperial Novellen idly twisted the golden band upon her finger, round and round and round.

"Holy shit, the chance to throw a tomato at THE emperor? This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! I'm not missing out on this!" Abraham said to himself as he read the missive!

Moliana keeps a copy of this letter close to herself and mutters to her courier within Woldzmir, the Master of Mail, to immediately give her any word of the Throne's response to the Pontiff's request of penance.  She had said she'd watch this matter closely during the last Imperial Court, and the Baroness was always one to keep to her word.

"It is a hard walk, certainly.   If they are able to put aside their pride and commit to this role to the People, perhaps I can finally breathe with peace again."

"This Pontiff must have a thing for seeing people with tomatoes on their face." Holy Sir Thucydides Melphestaus muttered to himself as he read the response within his home. "And having Her Imperial Majesty do such a walk? Surely even the High Pontiff knows it is improper to have a noble woman talk part in such an action?" Thucydides gave a shake of his head as he placed the missive to the side. "All of this is just the High Pontiff wanting his revenge, forgive them rather than punish them. Canonism was strengthened by these events, and yet the High Pontiff hopes to weaken it now."

Stor is stunned that people truly think forcing an emperor and a prince to act like the common people for a day is the Pontiff taking revenge on the men who attempted to usurp him. Stor thinks to himself, if this were a rebellion in Oren or Savoy, the emperor and prince would have executed the traitors.

"Let this be the beginning of the righting of wrongs..." James Hartford would murmur to himself, with slight skepticism that the Emperor would even consider the penance that His Holiness would impose.

"Blind loyalty to the emperor, coming from a holy knights, bah. Nobleman, Lord, Duke, priest, emperor or peasant; it matters not before the Lord and penance is the same regardless of your social position. Like the Prince of Savoy, we will ensure his safety on his journey to Karosgrad and whilst inside the city. The emperess and emperor can't just claim their titles in a bid to avoid penance, does this holy knight even know what penance is?" Asked Walton.

"If anyone just dares to lay a hand upon Their Imperial Majesties during this walk and if I see him or her doing so.. Knowing how barbaric things like this may turn out. And especially with dwarves most likely walking over the square of Karosgrad as we speak.." Joseph Clement de Sarkozy remarked while skinning a deer for dinner, cleaning his hands as he then turned to his granfather, uncles and brothers "Shall we see this for ourselves or do we stay in Providence? For I shall go to the Dual-Kingdom to see it for myself and if need be to protect the Empreror and Empress."

"You're muttering again.." Adeline de Sarkozy remarks as she walks up behind Thucydides. "This is completely ridiculous, why would someone even think to do such a thing...?" She says after skimming he missive on the side. "Regardless, the ISA will be on full alert and prepared if anyone tries anything. Everything will be alright, I believe." She sighs and places a gentle hand on Thucydides' shoulder. "I do not know what this Pontiff intends to accomplish, but I'm sure he will see the error in his ways soon. Have faith, dear."

"The righteous prevail, sinners sink down to the bottom of the Void, where no soul can hear them weep..", Father Erhard says quietly within the walls of the Basilica of St. Henrik, letting out a deep sigh while thinking about the schism that could have had a fatal ending.
